Abstract: The present paper examines the social relations related to the creation of fictive kin networks through the analysis of baptismal records in 18th century Portuguese village of Rio Grande. Focusing on the family of Antônio Simões and Maria Quitéria Marques de Souza, this article explores the benefits of baptizing individuals from different social groups, such as Minuano Indians and children of Azorean immigrants. This study stresses the importance of baptism as important social strategy to create alliances in groups with different social and legal status in colonial society. The use of baptismal networks was deployed by colonists to maintain or improve their social status, as well as it represented a strategy that fostered the advance of colonialism in the Southern frontier of Portuguese America. The alliances built through baptism reflected the values and social hierarchies of both Indigenous and Luso-Brazilian agents interacting in the formation of this 18th century colonial society.

Resumo: O presente artigo visa discutir as relações subjacentes ao batismo no extremo-sul da América, tendo como principal documentação os registros batismais da Vila do Rio Grande no século XVIII. Tomando o núcleo familiar do casal Antônio Simões e Maria Quitéria Marques de Souza, busca-se entender os benefícios advindos do estabelecimento de relações de apadrinhamento e de compadrio com setores sociais diferentes do seu, destacando os batismos de indígenas minuano e de fi lhos de açorianos. Para tanto, importante foi a utilização da metodologia de cruzamento de registros nominais e o diálogo com a antropologia. Tem-se como constatação a importância do estabelecimento das relações de apadrinhamento e compadrio com diferentes grupos étnicos, com pessoas e famílias de estatutos sociais distintos e de condições sociais diferentes, tanto superiores quanto inferiores às dos compadres e padrinhos de boas famílias lusas e luso-brasileiras. Tal recurso dá mostras de ter sido fundamental para a consecução de seus projetos sociais e familiares visando, na pior das hipóteses, a manutenção de suas posições e, na melhor, uma mobilidade social ascendente nessa fronteira, bem como ter contribuído no projeto de povoamento dos territórios meridionais da colônia e viabilizado a construção das hierarquias das sociedades locais, tanto a indígena quanto da luso-brasileira.

The article is devoted to the aspects of the paperwork of Orthodox parish in the Russian Empire in the late
19th and the early 20th century. It is shown that the parish clergy was responsible for the maintenance of a large amount of
record keeping for the Department of Orthodox confession of the Ober-Procurature. They were responsible for the acts of civil
status of the Orthodox population of the Empire, they had to verify their legitimacy and provide certificates to individuals and
institutions as well as keeping records for parish economy. Many of these duties had the extrareligional character and were the
result of the utilitarian approach of the Imperial state to the entire Orthodox Church and the parish in particular. The respective
obligations of a priest were a cause of a variety of conflicts between him and the parishioners and, in the end, there was a
cause of deep crisis in relations between the parishioners and pastors.

В статье рассматривается устройство делопроизводства православного прихода в Российской
империи в конце XIX — начале ХХ вв. Показывается, что на приходское духовенство было возложено ведение
значительной по объему отчетности по духовному ведомству, ведение актов гражданского состояния православного
населения империи с проверкой их законности и предоставление различных справок частным лицам и учреждениям
по этому вопросу, финансовая отчетность по приходскому хозяйству и др. Многие из этих делопроизводственных
обязанностей носили экстрарелигиозный характер и были следствием утилитаристского подхода имперского
государства по отношению к Православной церкви в целом и к приходу в частности. Автор показывает, что
соответствующие обязанности священника служили поводом для разнообразных конфликтов между ним и
прихожанами и, в конце концов, оказывались причиной глубокого кризиса в отношениях между прихожанами и
пастырями.

A presente pesquisa visa, através da utilização intensiva dos registros batismais da Vila do Rio Grande e mais  documentação complementar, apresentar a análise de aspectos que remetem às estratégias sociais e familiares na formação desse povoado, no lapso de tempo compreendido entre 1738 e 1763. Para tanto, esta utilizou-se em muito de
experimentações metodológicas em torno da conexão de registros nominais e de análise de redes sociais. Como resultados obtidos têm-se a afirmação da importância dos laços de compadrio entre pessoas de mesmo estatuto e, principalmente, de estatuto social distinto como importante recurso social para angariar prestígio e provavelmente como indicativo da gênese do poder das elites locais bem como do controle social desse poder outorgado pelos setores subalternos. Verificou-se a utilização em larga medida dos preceitos da economia do dom a reger uma sociedade em muito marcada pela concepção corporativa manifesta tanto na família como nas relações entre grupos sociais distintos.

Resumo
A vila do Rio Grande recebeu seu primeiro pároco em 1738. Nesse momento iniciaram os Registros Batismais da localidade, nascida em um local ermo, um ponto de passagem de rotas de gados e migração sazonal de indígenas. Com o estabelecimento de uma população lusa e das práticas religiosas católicas, todos os setores, incluindo aí os indígenas e africanos e seus descendentes, incorporaram o ritual do batismo em suas vidas. Para além do significado religioso deste ato, pretende-se analisar aqui as semelhanças e as diferenças nos padrões de
compadrio dos vários setores que compunham a sociedade, na tentativa dizer das alianças sociais e familiares buscadas por eles.

Abstract
The Vila de São Pedro do Rio Grande received its first parish priest in 1738; as a consequence, Baptismal records started being produced there at this year. Rio Grande was a Portuguese town located in the south of present day Brazilian territory, and during the XVIIIth  it was in the route of cattle and mule traders and in the route Indian seasonal migration. Because of the establishment of catholic religious habits in the town, the Baptism ceremony was acquired by all social groups presents in the region, including blacks and Indians. The present work analyzes the Baptismal records of Rio Grande identifying similarities and differences between the patterns of godparenthood and fictional kin of the diverse social groups. Such an analysis illuminates the strategies of family networks and alliances in region during the first decades of colonization.

Valtice (Feldberg), the town which was the principal residence of the Princes of Liechtenstein, was from the 17th century onwards one of the most important cultural and artistic centres on the border between Moravia and Austria. Thanks to the extensive building projects of the princely family, a large number of artists were to be found here, especially during the Baroque period. However, in spite of analyses of the seigniorial accounts, their names and social status have often remained unknown. A key source for the history of art in Valtice in this respect is the church registers, which were carefully kept from 1615 onwards. In entries in the registers can be found a large number of names of artists and craftsmen with details making it possible to compile a relatively extensive biographical dictionary of them for the period 1615–1732. The names found here provide evidence of the relationships between the artistic centres and the periphery, the movements of artistic craftsmen in Central Europe, and the remarkable social connections within the artistic community. In addition to well-known names (Giovanni Jacobo and Giovanni Tencalla, Antonio Carlone /†1664/, Johann Battista Erna /1622/23–1698/, Adam Lenckhard /1610–1661/), Pietro Maino Maderno /ca 1592–1653/, Domenico Mainardi, and Frantz Biener /1681/82–1742/, the dictionary also contains hitherto quite unknown artists (such as Giovanni Pietro Fiumbert, Lorenz Printzer /†1621/ and Valentin Hinterholtzer /†1645/), who evidently had an impact on the appearance of the main Liechtenstein residences throughout Moravia. Thanks to analyses of the entries in the registers it is possible to date and describe the functioning of stonemasons' and other craftsmen's workshops, and in some cases the establishment of rival stonemason dynasties and the arrival of artists from Vienna and other artistic centres. The result of this dictionary of artists and craftsmen in Valtice is not just a contribution to a dictionary of artists but in particular a better understanding of the way artists established roots in Moravian society during the Baroque period.

Usando a ata batismal da menina Felícia, filha de uma parda escrava e de um campônio, da localidade de Rio Grande, datada do ano de 1745, pretende-se apresentar uma reflexão acerca da aplicação do direito distributivo. Tendo havido uma evidente manobra política com claro abuso de poder, com a articulação do proprietário da menina e sua mãe, o Comissário de Mostras Cristóvão da Costa Freire, de seu braço direito, o Ajudante Pedro da Costa Marim e do Reverendo Padre Manuel Henriques para manter a menina em situação de cativeiro a despeito de um acordo firmado entre o campônio e o pároco da localidade, há nessa ata muito mais do que constam nas usuais. O vigário da localidade com postura de juiz nessa pendência arbitrou em favor dos menos qualificados socialmente, o que por si só é instigante o suficiente para demandar estudo. Verificou-se também, a partir de um trecho discurso do vigário nessa ata batismal, uma afinidade com a obra Etíope Resgatado, empenhado, sustentado, corregido, instruído e libertado . discurso Teológico-jurídico do padre Manuel Ribeiro da Rocha, no qual há refinados argumentos acerca da legalidade ou não da manutenção em cativeiro dos apresados na África e seus descendentes. A afirmação feita pelo pároco acerca de seu pensamento sobre Felícia é dita por ele como sendo intenções da Madre Igreja e vigentes, por uso e costume, em todo o Bispado. O argumento de Ribeiro da Rocha e o discurso do vigário parecem confluir para um viés abolicionista católico com características próprias, tendo como vetor o Arcebispado da Bahia, ao qual ambos estavam vinculados. A referida obra de Ribeiro da Costa é datada de 1758, ou seja, posterior ao batismo de Felícia, no qual há posição de recusa à escravidão expressa. Assim, evocando tanto a figura retórica como a figura geométrica da parábola, parte-se de um documento específico lavrado em uma localidade específica, neste caso o atípico batismo de Felícia, para descrever um arco que leva a um discurso teológico e jurídico, para então, repensar as relações entre a .gente comum., a Igreja e o ato de dispensar justiça. Após, retorna-se à situação específica que o suscitou, alguns passos mais adiante da surpresa causada inicialmente por esse registro batismal. A presente comunicação é, portanto, muito mais que a apresentação de conclusões sobre otema, a abertura de uma discussão acerca de uma posição, talvez minoritária na Igreja da Colônia, todavia existente e que não pode ser negligenciada.

La presencia de una comunidad irlandesa en el Señorío de Bizkaia durante la Edad Moderna es un hecho ampliamente constatado, si bien hasta el momento no ha sido detalladamente cuantificada. Este trabajo pretende cubrir tanto una primera aproximación al dimensionamiento socio-demográfico de ese flujo migratorio, como su interrelación con el discurrir histórico de Irlanda, los puntos de origen en la isla, las localidades de asentamiento en Bizkaia, y los mecanismos y estrategias de asimilación e integración de estos irlandeses.

THE 1744 CENSUS OF OLD BEČEJ
There are several censuses of Old Bečej Township from the time of the Tisa military border and the District of Potisje. From the period leading up to the demobilization of the Tisa military border, comes a list that is being published now. It was made for the Orthodox parish in Bečej and it is one of the oldest preserved lists of this kind. According to it, Bečej had 803 residents living in 126 houses in 1744. Some of the military oficiers and soldiers, whose names are listed, also appear in the lists of the Austrian authorities of that time. At the time of demobilization of the military border, residents of Bečej were
almost exclusively Orthodox Serbs. From the mid-eighteen century begins a colonization of Hungarians, Germans and Slovaks in the District, including Old Bečej.

A presente comunicação visa trazer a público alguns resultados parciais da introdução de elementos pertinentes à análise de redes sociais (social network analysis) e suas representações gráficas no estudo da formação e povoamento da Vila do Rio Grande, entre 1738 e 1763.

APPOINTMENT OF PARISH PRIESTS: VILLAGE OBLIGATIONS
Subsistance of parish clergy has been one of parishioners' obligations since the most remote times. Preserved material does not offer us the possibility to confirm with certainty when exactly was the practice of issuance of the written certificates by the villages, the so-called garanties (kaucije), established, stating that they would fulfill the aforementioned obligations. The first garanties preserved in their entirety were issued by the inhabitants of the village of Dobanovci in the Eparchy of Srem (in the year of 1731), followed by those of Veliko Selo in the Eparchy of Belgrade (in 1733). These two guaranties, as well as those dating from a later period, manifested the same structure that included the introductory paragraph in which the formal request to the mitropolitan was submitted, with whom the agreement concerning the appointment of certain priest had already been made in the meantime, while the parish obligations were enlisted in the principal segment of the guaranty. The inhabitants of Veliko Selo bound themselves to pay the bir (fix annual priest income which was collected by bed) to the new parish priest, Nikola, on a regular basis, but also to offer him the recompense for performing priestly duties, as well as field, garden and meadow together with their help with house construction works. By means of this document, the parishioners also offered guarantees to the priest that he would be exempted from all the fiscal and working obligations towards the state, which the rest of the population was bound to fulfill. Issuance of the garanty on behalf of the inhabitants of Veliko Selo was, in all probability, one of the indispensable measures, due to the fact that the former priest Stefan moved to Hasan-Pasha’s Palanka (Palanka of Smederevo), with the permission of Mitropolitan Mojsije; this event occurred at the time when, judging on his own words, the parishioners ceased to pay the bir to him and the monks from the Slanci started putting pressure on him. The guaranty of Veliko Selo is being kept in the Archives of the Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences of Karlovci under call number 1733/6 in the “B” holdings. Under the same call number the written certifi cate is kept, in which the duke and peasants of the village of Slanci guaranteed that they accepted secular priest Nikola to perform a religious service together with the monks of Slanci in the parish composed by the villages
of Slanci, Ošljani and Veliko Selo and to divide with them the income from the aforementioned villages.

Fazendo uso dos Registros de Batismo de filhos de açorianos na Vila do Rio Grande, no intervalo transcorrido entre os anos de 1738 e 1763, observou-se o estabelecimento de redes de relações interpessoais entre os migrados das ilhas e destes com membros de outros grupos sociais da região, através do compadrio. O desafio consiste em cruzar as informações destes registros com demais fontes disponíveis para a localidade e período, buscando detectar efeitos deste parentesco fictício nas trajetórias familiares e individuais, quer para a criança batizada e sua família, quer para os padrinhos e seus parentes.

This article examines rural welfare provision in Oxfordshire from 1834 to 1910 and establishes the nature and importance of two institutions in particular, coal and clothing clubs. It places these clubs within an extensive network of self-help and philanthropy which served not just paupers but also the self-sustaining poor and which reinforced the importance of the parish as an institution. A variety of strands of welfare were available to the poor, who exercised a substantial degree of selection in what was increasingly a consumer market of welfare. Coal and clothing clubs, alongside other initiatives such as friendly societies, boot and shoe clubs, soup kitchens, lying-in clubs and medical clubs, became an increasingly significant aspect of parish-based welfare. They reflected shifts in contemporary attitudes but have hitherto not received the attention they deserve, partly because of relatively poor and uneven documentation.
