Resumo: Este artigo analisa a mútua ingerência entre o matrimônio e o compadrio entre membros de uma elite rural do distrito de Piranga, localidade pertencente ao Termo de Mariana em Minas Gerais. Defende-se que estas duas práticas relacionais oferecem importantes chaves para compreensão das hierarquias sociais, da mobilidade sócio-espacial e enraizamento social. Como resultados, notou-se que através de casamentos com importantes famílias, indivíduos de outras regiões galgavam ascensão social e econômica através da inserção nos principais círculos relacionais da localidade em estudo. Por fim, perceberam-se importantes diferenças intergeracionais na prática do compadrio, a qual demonstra a importância em analisar esta prática conjuntamente ao ciclo vital.
Abstract: This work analyze the mutual interference between marriage and godparentage among members of a rural elite in the Piranga district, a place in the jurisdiction of the 'Termo de Mariana'. It is argued that these two relational practices offer important keys to understanding social hierarchies , social and spatial mobility and social embedded. As results, it was observed that through marriages with important families, individuals from other regions aspired social and economic ascension through insertion in the main relational circles of the locality under study. Finally, have been noted significant differences in intergenerational practice of godparentage, which demonstrates the importance in analyzing this practice jointly the life cycle.

The following article is an excerpt from a chapter of our forthcoming book: "The Shpoler Zeida – The Life, Legends, and Descendants of the Grandfather of Shpola."  The chapter is entitled: "Mysteries of the Shpoler Zeida Family."

Our decade-long genealogical research has been a dedicated pursuit to construct a family tree for a figure of profound importance in Chassidic history. This individual, born three centuries ago, is Yehuda Leib of Shpola (c. 1725–1811), a revered tzaddik known as the Saba Kadisha (Hebrew for “Holy Grandfather”) or the Shpoler Zeida (Yiddish for “Grandfather of Shpola”). His influence and teachings have left an indelible mark on Chassidic history, making our research all the more significant.

Our research has led us to identify over 5,500 descendants of the Shpoler Zeida. However, our journey was not without its share of enigmas and complexities. The intricate web of family connections, the gaps in historical records, and the challenge of verifying oral histories have all contributed to the depth and complexity of our research.

A particularly intriguing challenge was the discovery of fifteen families who claimed descent from the Shpoler Zeida, yet the specifics of their lineage remained unknown.  This lack of documentation has veiled their proud heritage in a cloak of uncertainty, shrouding their connection to the Shpoler Zeida in mystery.  As their lines of descent from the Shpoler Zeida were unknown, we have come to refer to them as the “Mystery Families.”

This article delves into the intriguing mystery of the Beletsky family (including the Belasco, Bell, Bruskin, Gellard, Goldberg, and Polis branches), who claim descent from the Shpoler Zeida.  The mystery involves how their earliest known Beletsky ancestor, Leiba Beletsky (1782–1846), and his wife, Risya (1789–bef. 1848), are connected to the Shpoler Zeida.

In this comprehensive research study on the Beletsky family's descent from the Shpoler Zeida, we painstakingly traced family records, cross-referencing them with historical documents and oral histories.  We believe that the available historical and genealogical evidence is sufficient to support the Beletsky family’s plausible line of descent from the Shpoler Zeida through his son Yaakov and the marriage of Yaakov’s daughter Risya to Leiba Beletsky and to connect them to the Shpoler Zeida family tree.

This paper explores the way in which feminism, whilst trying to achieve gender equality, has increased inequality between women.  It locates the cause of this in feminism's early adoption of Marxist and Engelsian thought and the way in which these two thinkers misconstrued the relationship between private and public domains.

This most recent edition of the bibliography contains almost 21,200 titles in English (64%) and French (36%), with an introductory section on historiography. It deals with every aspect of Italian history and culture from the Late Renaissance to the French Revolution.

Family history research has become increasingly popular as online genealogical research tools have become widely available. However, family historians, particularly those from dominant social groups, usually end up interpreting their family story within dominant national narratives. As a form of “memory work” (Kuhn, 1995), family history has the potential to unearth hidden or “forgotten” memories about the past and its implication for the present. Drawing on theoretical tools of the critical theoretical traditions, critical family history interrogates the interaction between family and context, with a particular focus on power relationships among sociocultural groups. In this article, I use my own family history to illustrate the recovery of a silenced or suppressed national narrative. Specifically, through an examination of property records and wills, I show how social relationships that colonization forged, rather than being a relic of the past, live on in the present, and how family history can challenge a national mythology that minimizes the importance and ongoing impact of colonization.

Institutionalizing Gender analyzes the relationship between class, gender, and psychiatry in France from 1789 to 1900, an era noteworthy for the creation of the psychiatric profession, the development of a national asylum system, and the spread of bourgeois gender values.

Pirkko Saision esikoisteos Elämänmeno on luettavissa sodasta kärsineen yhteiskunnan jälleenrakennuksen kuvauksena. Kirjan aikuiset päähenkilöt puurtavat elämässään eteenpäin taloudellisista ja inhimillisistä menetyksistään huolimatta. Vuosien edetessä rikkinäiset vaatteet vaihtuvat vähitellen ehjiin, sikuri aitoon kahviin ja pienet hellahuoneet uusiin kaksioihin ja kolmioihin lähiöissä. Materiaalisen hyvinvoinnin parantumisella oli kuitenkin hintansa. Päivät tehtailla olivat pitkiä, ja niukkuuden vaivaamassa Suomessa huoltajien aika ja energia menivät elannon ja asumisen turvaamiseen. Lasten ei aina ollut helppo löytää paikkaansa aikuisten huolien ja keskinäisten ristiriitojen maailmassa. Sodan synnyttämien henkisten vaurioiden korjaaminen oli monesti hitaampaa ja vaikeampaa kuin materiaalisten. Suomi menetti toisessa maailmansodassa yli 90 000 miestä, ja noin 30 000 naista jäi sotaleskeksi ja 50 000 lasta sotaorvoksi. Kotiseudun menetys ja evakkoon lähtö koskettivat yli 420 000 suomalaista. Menetyksen tunteita synnyttivät lisäksi kokemukset kadotetuista vuosista. Sota leikkasi niin miesten kuin naisten elämästä vuosia, joita sodan päättymisen jälkeen pyrittiin kirimään. Niukkuuden ja työn leimaamina jälleenrakennuksen vuosina monista unelmista jouduttiin kuitenkin luopumaan. Aika ja sen oikeanlainen käyttö nousi asiaksi, joka synnytti ristiriitoja eri sukupolvien välille. Lapsille toivottiin parempaa elämää, mutta samanaikaisesti vanhempien omakohtaiset kokemukset nuoruuden menettämisestä loivat katkeruutta ja ehkä myös kateutta suhteessa lapsiin ja heidän opiskeluunsa ja huvitteluunsa. Rauhan tulon jälkeenkin sota rasitti suomalaisperheitä niin materiaalisesti kuin henkisesti, ja Elämämenossa näitä arkisen selviytymisen haasteita kuvataan hienovaraisesti ja koskettavasti. Monien erovuosien jälkeen perheenjäsenten ei aina ollut helppoa mukautua yhteisen elämän vaatimuksiin, toisten vierauteen ja kenties muuttuneeseen käytökseen. Myös uusien perheiden synty loi omia sopeutumisen haasteitaan. Sotaa edeltäneisiin vuosiin verrattuna perhe-elämä muodostui aiempaa hajanaisemmaksi. Ahtaudessa perheiden yhteinen ajankäyttö väheni, ja lapset hätisteltiin ahtaista alivuokralaisasunnoista pihalle ja hoitoon sukulaisten luokse. Levon ja rauhan saamiseksi vanhemmat turvautuivat komentamiseen ja tiukkaan kurinpitoon. Ylipäänsä vanhempien auktoriteettiasema oli vahva ja neljännen käskyn hengessä lasten odotettiin tottelevan ja kunnioittavan vanhempiaan. Kun perheiden yhteinen ajankäyttö väheni ja siihen yhdistyi kuriin perustuva kasvatus, eivät vanhempien ja lasten väliset suhteet muodostuneet aina kovin läheisiksi. Nuorille vertaissuhteet muodostuivat merkityksellisiksi ja vapaa-aikaa vietettiin kodin ulkopuolella, niin elokuvien non-stop näytöksissä kuin tanssi-ja urheilupaikoissa. Vaikka työpäivät ja –viikot olivat pitkiä, pääsivät myös aikuiset nauttimaan vapaa-ajasta. Elokuvat ja tanssi kiinnostivat myös varttuneempaa väkeä ja ravintoloiden lisäksi juhlia järjestettiin myös kodeissa. Onnen ja nuoruuden hetkien tavoitteluun liittyi usein juominen, ja alkoholinkäyttö lisääntyi sotien jälkeen niin miesten kuin naisten keskuudessa. Päivittäisen sinnittelyn keskellä ihmiset saivat voimia erilaisista asioista: jotkut haaveilivat lomamatkoista, toiset sosialistisesta maailmanjärjestyksestä, osa löysi lohtua raamatusta. Mikä yhdisti hyvin erilaisia ihmisiä, oli usko parempaan tulevaisuuteen.

Everybody is born into a family. Each has its own history, therefore, 'our history' is not made by us, but by previous generations. The rise of International migration and the crumbling of family structures, however, only make it harder for descendants to learn about their family history. Inhibited by language and geographical barriers as well as lost connections to the bearers of knowledge, many offspring of migrant families year for answers to questions such as 'Where do I come from?' or 'How did I get here?' Answering these requires re-establishing lost connections and meeting family one previously did not know. This paper illustrates how the juxtaposition of two generations of Chinese Australian migrants' narrative (a 'pioneer migrant' and an 'overseas born Chinese' are vital to piecing together a segment of family history.

This study is the first to deal with the subject of children and human life course in Fronto's correspondence. It deals with sections in Fronto's letters concerning wet-nurses and breastfeeding, pedagogues, child beating, youthful (mis)behaviour, affective relationships between master and pupil, pueri senes and old age – interesting passages hardly noticed by social historians or insufficiently treated in the commentary by M. P. J. VAN DEN HOUT. In the fourth paragraph, I elucidate passages testifying to the warm and close relationship between Fronto and the young children of Marcus Aurelius' imperial family. Both these texts and the letters about Fronto's grandchildren (elaborated upon in the fifth paragraph) reveal a petting attitude towards children, a way of thinking which is parallelled in various other sources,  especially in epigraphical poetry. In the conclusion, I ask whether Fronto's way of looking at children is to be linked with a changed attitude in the Antonine second century. I am, however, rather reluctant to posit suchlike changed mental attitude.

En este trabajo se analiza la plasmación que la nueva regulación canónica sobre la celebración del matrimonio tuvo en las actas sinodales de las dos principales archidiócesis del virreinato peruano: Lima y La Plata. Con ese fin, se han analizado las constituciones de los sínodos reunidos entre 1570 y 1613 dentro de las diócesis dependientes entonces de estas dos grandes jurisdicciones eclesiásticas; es decir, las del Cuzco, Quito, Trujillo, Arequipa, Huamanga, Popayán, Panamá, Santiago de Chile y La Imperial, Tucumán, Asunción, La Paz y Santa Cruz de la Sierra.

Ramiza Smajić Izgubljeno je samo ono čega smo se odrekli! Prikaz djela: Ibrahim Hodžić, Uvod u genealogiju i historiju familije, Sarajevo, 2017. Naviknuta na široko prisutan diskurs u kojem se nacionalno u svijesti o sebi istura ispred općeg znanja o identitetu, čitalačka javnost će sigurno biti iznenađena jednom drugačijom knjiškom jedinicom udžbeničkog naslova: Uvod u genealogiju i historiju familije; kako napraviti porodično stablo. Sam autor, Ibrahim Hodžić, jedan je od onih koji su, vođeni ličnom motivacijom i dijelom profesionalnim uklonom nauci, hrabro zakoračili u elaboraciju naučne metode u genealogiji, a posebno izradi porodičnog stabla. Uviđajući koliko je njemu bitno poznavanje historije njegove porodice i skupljajući podatke za to, profesor Hodžić se suočio sa nedostatkom onoga što obično i ne rade pojedinci nego institucije, a to su priručnici i standardi realizacije takvog projekta u našoj zemlji. Motiviran da svoja saznanja prenese na pravi način čitaocima, prof. Hodžić je krenuo u veliki poduhvat u kojem je uzora mogao tražiti uglavnom kod vanbalkanskih autora, u praksi zemalja koje već stoljećima prate historiju porodica i u djelićima radova nekih domaćih autora. Pri svemu tome je naišao na niz problema, od terminologije koja nije bila poznata kod nas ili je poznata tek dijelom, preko poriva da takvu jednu tematiku od priče o hromosomima do informacija o mjestu čuvanja izvora o porijeklu, rodoslovu i slično, predoči na način prijemčiv čitaocima različitog nivoa obrazovanja i kulture. Posebno težak stepenik pred autorima sličnih djela jeste priroda trusnog bosanskog prostora u kojem je evidentan genealoški diskontinuitet. Sve to je ovu knjigu učinilo višeslojnom, prepoznatljivo kroz naizmjenično uvjerenje čitaoca da se radi o punom naučnom pristupu u nekim poglavljima, informativnom u drugim, edukativnom u trećim. Čitalac nerijetko kod nekih detalja pomisli prvo da su suvišni, a već u slijedećih nekoliko redova shvati koliko u cjelini sadržaja i autorovih namjera imaju smisla (npr. kontakt adrese arhivskih i drugih ustanova u BiH koje posjeduju arhivsku građu bitnu za temu historije familija). Pažljivo biran papir, korice, format, primjerene uvodne sentence i ilustracije, dosljedno prate i zaokružuju sadržaj sa slijedećim poglavljima: 1. Genealogija – prvi koraci u genealoškom istraživanju i kreiranju porodičnog stabla, 2. Institucionalni izvori podataka, 3. Različiti oblici predstavljanja genealogija, 4. Srodstvo i vrste srodstva, 5. Sistemi numerisanja, 6. Imena i prezimena, 7. Historijat genealogije, 8. Historija familije, 9. Svjetske abrahamske religije, 10. Uticaj historijskih okolnosti na rezultate genealoškog istraživanja, 11. Izrada porodičnog stabla pomoću genealoškog softvera, 12. Prilozi u vidu tabela simbola i skraćenica, rječnika genealoških pojmova i dr. Možda je upravo činjenica da je autor obrazovanjem vezan za prirodnomatematičke nauke doprinijela kvalitetu djela u smislu odsustva paradigme nacionalnog naboja u fokusu na porijeklu porodice i svijesti o sebi. Kroz doneseni sadržaj, čitalac na praktičan način shvata u kolikoj mjeri genealogija, ustvari, nadvisuje nacionalno i to prvenstveno realitetom svoje trajnosti. This chapter examines discourses on polygyny among East Syrian Christians in late antique and early Islamic Iraq and Iran. Through such discourses, articulated principally in legal texts but also in chronicles and biographical dictionaries, ecclesiastical elites sought to assert religious distinctiveness in the regulation of particular marital practices while lay parties variously accepted and contested the ecclesiastical vision. The chapter outlines the various forms of polygynous household organization that were customary in certain sections of Near Eastern societies, especially elite ones, and contends that many lay Christians engaged in them just as their non-Christian neighbors did. From an early date, however, East Syrian bishops set a standard defining polygyny as outside the bounds of the practices that denoted membership in their vision of Christian community. Furthermore, the ecclesiastical hierarchy’s increased efforts to formalize a comprehensive communal legal tradition after the Muslim conquests resulted in new strategies to combat lay polygyny; chiefly, the bishops sought to regulate the inheritance practices of Christians so as to exclude the progeny of polygynous unions. In articulating this new Christian inheritance law, East Syrian ecclesiastics promoted a notion of the Christian household radically different from household patterns at elite levels of Islamic society, where polygyny and concubinage were standard techniques for the perpetuation of lineages.

Family, Sexuality, Reproduction: an Unsolved Puzzle discusses the relationship between family history, gender studies and the studies of sexualities. Its starting point is the consideration that, perhaps surprisingly, disciplines and research interests apparently close have struggled to find a common language and a fruitful cooperation. Moving from a perspective of family history, this article explores causes and consequences of this apparent difficulty in finding a common ground between scholars of family, gender and sexuality and the possibility of overcoming it.

Conceptualised in opposition to 'orthodox' medicine, homoeopathy, a western medical project originating in eighteenth-century Germany, was reconstituted as vernacular medicine in British Bengal. India went on to become the home of the largest population of users of homoeopathic medicine in the world. Combining insights from the history of colonial medicine and the cultural histories of family in British India, Shinjini Das examines the processes through which western homoeopathy was translated and indigenised in the colony as a specific Hindu worldview, an economic vision and a disciplining regimen. In tracing the localisation of German homoeopathy in a British Indian province, this book analyses interactions between Calcutta-based homoeopathic family firms, disparate contributors to the Bengali print market, the British colonial state and emergent nationalist governments. The history of homoeopathy in Bengal reveals myriad negotiations undertaken by the colonised peoples to reshape scientific modernity in the subcontinent.

This paper highlights a fresh approach in the Mid-Seventies to the historiographical discussion of the female condition and women’s role in the ancient, and more specifically Roman World, thanks to works like Sarah B. Pomeroy’s "Goddesses, whores, wives, and slaves "(1975). Beyond its place in that decade’s feminist debate in the USA, this book’s many faceted and pragmatic nature has contributed a more articulated view of Roman women’s image. It left its mark not only on later historiography, sparking new discussions among Roman history specialists, but also well beyond, as the numerous videos and films on Roman women available on the Internet attest. These latter display the creativity and skill of their authors, of various ages and levels of knowledge and technical expertise. While being informed, the viewer is catapulted into women’s daily life in ancient Rome as they deal with the typical problems ascribed to women in every epoch. In this perspective, such efforts can be seen as an excellent example of applied Public History, whose usefulness in increasing gender studies relating to Roman history is well worth evaluation.
