Parmigianino

- Diligenza e prestezza.è uno studio sulla tecnica della pittura attraverso l’analisi incrociata dei testi letterari e delle opere d’arte. Dopo aver ripercorsa la fortuna critica dei testi dei principali autori – Leonardo, Vasari, Armenini, Borghini, Lomazzo – ne vengono messe a confronto le informazioni sul disegno e sulla pittura, analizzandone il lessico specifico e individuando i materiali e i procedimenti esecutivi. Al tempo stesso alcuni temi centrali del dibattito teorico – il disegno l’invenzione, il paragone tra le arti – sono esaminati alla luce del loro rapporto con la tecnica. Infine alcuni dipinti del museo di Capodimonte, scelti come casi esemplificativi, sono stati analizzati sulla base degli studi scientifici e delle fonti.

Un numero significativo di dipinti sottoposti a restauro mostra di aver subito cambiamenti più o meno evidenti per adattarli a nuove esigenze di varia natura. Si tratta spesso di modifiche dimensionali, che nelle chiese  possono essere dovute a  trasformazioni e rinnovamenti dell’impianto architettonico e decorativo  che hanno richiesto sagomature realizzate tramite tagli o aggiunte. In altri casi le ragioni sono di  ordine collezionistico ed espositivo, per armonizzare fra loro il formato di opere diverse o per renderle più consone ad un allestimento museale. Le ridipinture, che quasi sempre accompagnano queste modifiche, possono essere a loro volta dettate da motivi funzionali o da  mutamenti del gusto più che da reali necessità di ripristino della figuratività danneggiata. L’intervento di restauro allora si configura anche come occasione per ripercorrere il senso di queste trasformazioni, attraversando le diverse letture che nel passato ne hanno accompagnato la fortuna critica. Una rassegna di casi, fra le opere restaurate nei laboratori della Soprintendenza del Polo Museale e sul territorio napoletano, sarà scelta per esemplificare modalità e scopi delle molteplici interpretazioni che hanno lasciato la loro traccia sul corpo delle opere

RESUMEN:  El 24 de febrero de 1530, Carlos V recibía en la ciudad italiana de Bolonia la corona de emperador de manos del pontífice Clemente VII. El acontecimiento, de largo alcance y significación, constituyó la más contundente afirmación del poder y la fuerza imperiales. Engalanada la ciudad como trasunto de Roma, el alborozado pueblo boloñés, acudido en masa al evento, vio desfilar por entre arcos de triunfo, galerías y columnas all’antica, trofeos monumentales y colosos escultóricos, al soberano del mundo y su imponente cortejo: un sinfín de cardenales, obispos, príncipes y caballeros venidos de todas las naciones del occidente cristiano para honrar al flamante césar y una infinita selección de sus victoriosas y variopintas mesnadas, revestidos todos para la ocasión con los más ricos uniformes y atavíos.

He aquí el testimonio literario y visual de aquella deslumbrante celebración y aquella colorista cabalgata: el relato que debía guardar inmortal registro del acontecimiento, escrito por el polígrafo humanista colonés Enrique Cornelio Agripa de Nettesheim († 1535), teólogo, jurista, médico, alquimista, nigromante y por entonces también cronista del emperador; y el espectacular friso calcográfico de la cabalgata –restaurado digitalmente para la ocasión y presentado en un largo desplegable de seis metros–, obra del pintor y grabador muniqués Nicolas Hogenberg († 1539). Completan esta edición el estudio introductorio y las notas del doctor en Historia del Arte y especialista en las relaciones entre arte y poder en la Edad Moderna Rubén López Conde.

If Parmigianino was one of the most prolific portrait painters of the first half of the 16th century, he was also one of the most inventive. Proofs of that particular talent are many paintings which associate the painter’s own thinking about contemporary artistic conventions of individual representation with a research of appropriation by the image of social and political norms  or specific imaginations  liable to perform the singular identity of their sitters. The Portrait of Galeazzo Sanvitale that Parmigianino painted in Parma in 1524 constitutes an example of this type. Put there for the first time in relation with the institutional context of its elaboration, it appears to relay its sitter’s complex identification strategy through the instrumentalization of specific values relative to prince, courtier, condottiere, or cavaliere figures. This ambitious project calls to an identity crisis phenomena and nobiliary prerogatives in Parma consecutive to the city conquest by the papal forces between the years of 1520 and 1540.

Il presente elaborato tenta una contestualizzazione dal punto di vista storico-artistico del ciclo di affreschi con le Storie di Diana e Atteone eseguito dal Parmigianino (1503-1540) in una saletta del castello di Fontanellato, verosimilmente fra il 1523 e il 1524. A partire da un’analisi del dato stilistico, si sono tratteggiati i principali riferimenti – da Mantegna al Correggio, da Leonardo al Pordenone – che giocarono un ruolo decisivo nella formazione del linguaggio del giovane artista, così come si mostra tanto a Fontanellato quanto nelle opere del primo periodo parmense. Attraverso lo studio della committenza e la valutazione delle principali interpretazioni iconologiche, si è cercato inoltre di dare conto del significato cifrato e sfuggente del ciclo. Si è infine evocata la diffusione di quel tipo di decorazioni a soggetto mitologico nelle corti padane, sottolineando come la stratificazione di significati, fra allegorici, religiosi e morali, tenuti insieme dalla cultura umanistica, dimostri la volontà di una piccola corte di allinearsi ai cenacoli culturali più aggiornati.

This short Festschrift article traces the provenance of Girolamo Mazzola Bedoli's Holy Family, which is today in the Szepmuveszeti Muzeum, Budapest. It is identified as formerly belonging to the celebrated Orléans gallery, before having been acquired by Prince Paul Esterházy in London during the 1830s or '40s.
The article also contains some hitherto unrecorded provenance data on two further paintings in Budapest: Simone Peterzano's Venus Playing the Lute and Bernardo Strozzi's Tribute Money.

Art-historical partners Joseph Archer Crowe (1851) and Giovanni Battista Cavalcaselle (1865) made individual surveys in Denmark.

This paper speculates on their interactions with Danish expert Niels Lautitz Andreas Høyen (1798-1870). It focuses on Cavalcaselle’s Danish sketches (Marciana, Venice). Moreover, it offers new perspectives on Gustav Friedrich Waagen’s stay in Copenhagen (1868).

Furthermore, it expounds on the fortuna and conservation history of the "Man of Sorrow" by Andrea Mantegna, the "Portrait of Lorenzo Cybo" by Parmigianino, an altarpiece by Filippino Lippi, the  alleged "Portrait of Antonio Galli" assigned to Titian or Federico Barocci and two male portraits assigend to Hans Memling and Andrea Del Sarto. Furthermore, it discusses the attribution of some other – mostly Valenti Gonzaga – paintings now in the Statens Museum for Kunst, as a copy from Raphael once assigned to the Sassoferrato or an altarpiece attributed to Marco Vecellio's circle.

In addition, this paper investigates the 19th-century criticism of draperies by Mantegna and Leonardo not only in relation to Giovanni Bellini's or Hubert and Jan van Eyck's oeuvre.

Finally, it hypothesyses the identification of a "Portrait of Thomas Gresham" assigned to the so-called 'Master of the 1540s'.

Enea Vico engraved Old Woman with a Distaff in 1543-44 after a drawing by Parmigianino in reverse. Rather than dismissing this reversal as an insignificant alteration inherent in the process of printmaking, this paper interprets this action as a means of manipulating subject matter. Vico’s print becomes literally and figuratively a mirror image to the drawing: the spinner was transformed from an ordinary housewife into a sinister woman. This engraving thus emerges as another case where the “reproductive” label is inadequate, as it fails to capture the printer’s genuine intentions.

Anthonie Blocklandt and Italy

Among the several studies dedicated to the northern Europe artists travelling in XVI century Italy, stands out the lack of detailed work about Anthonie Blocklandt van Montfoort, a noble origin painter from Utrecht, who was in Rome in 1572. If his late paintings and prints have been reassessed, specifically for their importance for the develop of late Dutch mannerism, the very first works made after the Italian journey of 1572 are still uncertain. Starting from his preference for the elegance of Parmigianino as compared the massive forms of Michelangelo, that, as Van Mander reported, Blocklandt didn’t like, the article tries to find which models Blocklandt can have turned his attention during the stay in Rome and who others artists he can have met.

Throughout his career Francesco Mazzola, better known as il Parmigianino, worked for female patrons, secular as well as religious, on projects large and small. He painted a room with mythological scenes for a local noblewoman, a baby crib for another Parmese lady, and an altarpiece for Bolognese nuns. Two of his best-known altarpieces were made for secular female patrons. Such a statement is hardly surprising, since sixteenth-century historical sources refer, albeit briefly, to these women.  This essay focuses on two widows for whom Parmigianino painted Marian altarpieces, Maria Bufalini and Elena Baiardi. Both altarpieces invite questions about the relationship of widows to the Virgin Mary and Saint Jerome.

Two catalogue entries for 'Renaissance Modern', an exhibition held at The Courtauld Gallery (22 April–5 June 2015), curated by Guido Rebecchini and Ed Wouk. These entries focus on two drawings by Parmigianino – one in black chalk, the other in pen and ink – which are generally considered to be preparatory studies for Parmigianino's 'Conversion of Saul' (Vienna).
