Paul Evdokimov

Hans-Georg Gadamer has claimed firstly, that in religious painting the image does not merely copy its prototype but is in "ontological communion" with it; and secondly, that in this respect the religious painting is exemplary for painting in general. I examine these claims with specific reference to Eastern Orthodox icons, drawing on both classical and modern Orthodox theological accounts of the icon to support and amplify Gadamer's claim about "ontological communion". I then consider accounts by J-L Marion and by the theologian Paul Evdokimov of how the icon can be exemplary for painting in general. I argue that Marion's discussion leads to some unacceptably conclusions, and that Evdokimov provides a more convincing account. This commits him to a strong and controversial thesis that all art (consciously or otherwise and whatever its explicit subject-matter) is in a sense religious.

Here is a modest reflection on the Church in the thought of Joseph Ratzinger (1927–). My aim is to examine Ratzinger’s claim that a proper understanding of the Church is obtained from the standpoint of her liturgy. While Ratzinger presents a eucharistic ecclesiology, not only must one pay attention to complement a sociological interpretation of the Church with Revelation as a dogmatic truth, but also to identify and distinguish among the various levels that are at play in speaking of a eucharistic ecclesiology. What is examined here is the relation of the Eucharist to the Church in the light of Christ, the sacraments and the Christian life. The primary level, then, is Christological. This means that in Christ, particularly shedding his life on the cross, the Church has its foundation and life in the world. The second level is a sacramental one, where the believing Christian community gathers around one altar to celebrate the breaking of the bread and to live in communion with each other. The third level is the existential one where belonging to the Church implies bearing witness, leading a Christian life, and being of service to others in the community and in the world. Our aim here is to elucidate the importance and complementarity of each dimension of Ratzinger’s eucharistic ecclesiology after having presented his understanding that ecclesial communion has its centre in the Eucharist.

Unlike the spectre that was written of in1848 by Marx and Engels, in The Communist Manifesto, there is now no “Holy alliance to exorcise this spectre…..”.

On the contrary, Paganism is, at worse neither known nor acknowledged; and at best not understood nor comprehended.

В начале 20-ого века произошло большое переселение русских интеллигентов в диаспору, которая возникла в Европе после трагических событий революции 1917-го года. В этом движении появились новые направления, основанные на традициях русской мысли 19-го века и в свою очередь возникли новые направления. Одним из выдающихся мыслителей этого времени был Павел Флоренский, который остался на родине. В своей идее о «церковности», что означает действие Божие в мире, Флоренский объясняет идеал красоты, который определяется реальным общением с Богом. Это немного отличается от заключения, которое можно вывести из изречения Фёдора Достоевского, сказанного князем Мышкиным в романе Идиот, что «красота спасёт мир». Это тоже сходно с идеалом красоты, который Павел Евдокимов, знаменитый богослов русской диаспоры, объясняет в своём труде о святых иконах. Ссылаясь на литературу Достоевского и на духовность преп. Серафима Саровского, Евдокимов показывает, что идеал красоты, котовый выражен в иконах, сходится с тем, что выражено в литературе и в богословском толковании.

RESUMO: O debate trinitário esteve presente nos primeiros séculos do cristianismo. Defender o cristianismo frente às acusações de triteísmo ou da negação da divindade do Filho e do Espírito Santo surge como necessidade para uma doutrina cristã mais sólida. Segundo Sesboüé, os debates trinitários prosseguiram-se no Oriente até o final do séc. V, enquanto que a discussão sobre os termos do dogma trinitário se estende na teologia ocidental por mais tempo, a partir de Agostinho, até Tomás de Aquino. Ao longo da história, diversos foram os autores que procuraram fazer uma síntese do pensamento trinitário oriental. Dentre esses autores, encontra-se Paul Evdokimov e John Meyendorff. Ambos, dentre suas obras, reservaram um tempo para expor o processo de formulação do dogma da Trindade no pensamento ortodoxo. Esta comunicação tem o intuito de expor, em linhas gerais, a contraposição entre os conceitos de natureza e pessoa na teologia trinitária oriental e ocidental, segundo o pensamento de Paul Evdokimov. ABSTRACT: The Trinitarian debate was present in the first centuries of Christianity. Defend Christianity in the face of accusations of tritheism or denial of the divinity of the Son and of the Holy Spirit as the need arises for a more solid Christian doctrine. According Sesboué the Trinitarian debates continued in the East until the end of the century. V, while the discussion of the terms of the Trinitarian dogma in Western theology extend longer, from Augustine to Thomas Aquinas. Throughout history, many were the authors who attempted to make a synthesis of Eastern trinitarian thinking. Among these authors, is Paul Evdokimov and John Meyendorff. Both among his works, took the time to explain the process of formulation of the dogma of the Trinity in the orthodox thinking. This communication aims to expose, in general, the opposition between the concepts of nature and people in Eastern and Western Trinitarian theology, according to the thought of Paul Evdokimov.

Πολυάριθμες μελέτες διαπιστώνουν το σπουδαιότατο ρόλο που παίζει στο σύγχρονο κόσμο ο λεγόμενος αθεϊσμός. Σήμερα, περισσότερο από κάθε άλλη φορά, ο θεολογικός στοχασμός, καλείται να αντιμετωπίσει με σοβαρότητα αυτό το φαινόμενο. Ο όρος όμως «αθεϊσμός» είναι πολύ ευρύς. Μπορεί να σημαίνει τόσα πράγματα, ώστε στο τέλος καταντά εξαιρετικά διφορούμενος. Για να το καταλάβει αυτό κανείς, δεν χρειάζεται να εισέλθει στη φύση και στα αίτια των διαφόρων μορφών του σημερινού αθεϊσμού· αρκεί να επιχειρήσει να δώσει ένα σαφή και από όλους παραδεκτό ορισμό του πράγματος. Θα αντιληφθεί τότε ότι, όπως υπάρχει σήμερα πλήθος αθεϊστικών συστημάτων, έτσι είναι δυνατό να υπάρξει πλήθος ορισμών του αθεϊσμού. Αν πάρουμε τα συστήματα φιλοσόφων όπως ο Σπινόζα, ο Φίχτε, ο Χάϊντεγκερ, ο Βίτγκενστάϊν, ή, από την άλλη πλευρά, ο Κάρλ Μάρξ ή ο Ζάν Πώλ Σάρτρ, θα διαπιστώσουμε ότι παρουσιάζουν μεταξύ τους σοβαρές διαφορές. Αν πάλι ανοίξουμε ένα βιβλίο που έχει γίνει πια κλασικό, το «Φιλοσοφικό Λεξικό» του Λαλάντ, θα βρούμε την ακόλουθη διατύπωση : «Αθεϊσμός, η θεωρία που αρνείται την ύπαρξη του Θεού». Η φαινομενική διαύγεια αυτού του ορισμού μάς γοητεύει. Γρήγορα όμως μαντεύουμε ότι, πίσω από τη σαφή αυτή πρόσοψη, κρύβεται μια πραγματικότητα τρομερά περίπλοκη. Πραγματικά, ο ορισμός αυτός έχει νόημα μόνον όταν υπάρχουν δύο βασικές προϋποθέσεις, όταν έχει καταλάβει κανείς ακριβώς τι σημαίνει ο ισχυρισμός: «αρνούμαι την ύπαρξη του Θεού»· και, προ πάντων, όταν γνωρίζει κάπως τι σημαίνει η λέξη «Θεός». Υπάρχει όμως — είναι καν δυνατή— μια φιλοσοφική Θεωρία, που, να μπορεί να ισχυριστεί ότι εκπληρώνει με τρόπο ικανοποιητικό τους δύο αυτούς όρους; Υπάρχει —είναι καν δυνατό— ένα φιλοσοφικό σύστημα, που να μπορεί να υποστηρίξει ότι αντιμετώπισε σε όλη την έκταση και το βάθος τους τα δύο αυτά αιτήματα και, μόνον έτσι, κατέληξε στο συμπέρασμα ότι πρέπει να «αρνηθεί την ύπαρξη του Θεού»; Αυτό είναι ίσως το πρώτο ζήτημα που θα έπρεπε να εξετάσει κανείς. Α. Ας δούμε εν πρώτοις τι σημαίνει η έκφραση «αρνούμαι την ύπαρξη του Θεού». Το να αρνείται κανείς το Θεό —-το να καταλήγει, με άλλα λόγια, στην κρίση ότι ο Θεός δεν υπάρχει —προϋποθέτει ότι ο άνθρωπος— κριτής έχει διατρέξει και εξαντλήσει κάθε δυνατή οδό γνώσεως, και ότι, υστέρα από όλες αυτές τις έρευνες, έχει καταλήξει στο συμπέρασμα ότι το αντικείμενο των αναζητήσεών του, ο Θεός, πραγματικά δεν υπάρχει. Αν δεν έχει προηγηθεί αυτή η διαδικασία τότε η κρίση που εκφέρουμε δεν είναι, φυσικά, διαπίστωση μιας αντικειμενικής αλήθειας, άλλα απλώς διατύπωση μιας υποκειμενικής υποθέσεως. Μια αναζήτηση όμως αυτού του είδους στον τομέα που μας απασχολεί, περιπλέκεται από την ύπαρξη, ενός θεμελιώδους γεγονότος : Από το ότι η γνώση του Θεού είναι μοναδική στο είδος της, και το αντικείμενο των ερευνών μας, ο Θεός, είναι μια πραγματικότητα που ανήκει σε μια τάξη τελείως διαφορετική από την τάξη στην οποία ανήκουν οι πραγματικότητες του κόσμου μας. Článek zkoumá, v čem východní ikonopis a západní umění mohou obohatit vztah člověka k prostoru a k transcendenci. Soustředí se na pojetí ikon u Leonida Ouspenského, Pavla Florenského a Paula Evdokimova. Vyzdvihuje jejich participační pojetí, ale zároveň ukazuje dva problémy, Jednak výlučnost, s jakou se takto pojaté ikony staví do kontrastu se západními (čímž je obvykle myšleno ne-pravoslavnými) obrazy, dále pak narušení boholidské synergie, které se projeví jak ve vztahu ke stvořené skutečnosti na ikonách, tak ve vztahu k tvořivosti ikonopisců. Za pomoci dvou současných pravoslavných teologů, Assaada E. Kattana a Richarda Schneidera, ukazuje, jak je tyto problémy možné překonat.

The chapter explores Ouspensky‘s, Florensky’s and Evdokimov’s notions of an icon. With the help of contemporary Orthodox theologians such as Assaad Kattan and Richard Schneider, it challenges the confrontational attitude towards Western art which also thematises relations to space and to transcendence.

This paper argues that Orientalium Ecclesiarum (OE) is a proof of the “hermeneutic of reform,” the lens through which, as proposed by Pope Benedict XVI, one should read the documents of the Second Vatican Council. Key to this hermeneutic, the paper will show how OE demonstrates the Council’s deep commitment to ressourcement, a recovery and appropriation of Tradition. Attention will also be paid to similar and related trends in 20th-century Orthodox theology, the so-called “neo-patristic synthesis.”  The paper will show how OE’s exhortation to the Eastern Churches to “take steps to return to their ancestral traditions” generates genuine development, which occurs within the dialectic between return and recovery. In light of OE, this paper will examine how the Eastern Catholic Church is an essential teacher of the hermeneutic of reform for the rest of the Catholic Communion. Finally, the paper will evaluate how this recovery can better equip the Eastern Catholic churches to respond to OE’s renewed evangelical mandate.

Ο Παύλος Ευδοκίμωφ ανήκει στους πρωτεργάτες της σύγχρονης ορθόδοξης θεολογίας που εργάστηκαν όχι απλώς για την έξοδο από την «βαβυλώνεια αιχμαλωσία» στη δυτική σχολαστική νοησιαρχία και την επανασύνδεσή της με τη θεολογία των πατέρων, αλλά κυρίως για την επανεύρεση της δημιουργικής στάσης της. Έχοντας υπόψη του την νεοσχολαστική αλλά και ευρύτερα την ακαδημαϊκή θεολογία, ο Παύλος Ευδοκίμωφ δεν υποστήριζε μιαν απροϋπόθετη ή απλώς γραμματολογική επιστροφή στους Πατέρες ούτε απλώς μια «νεοπατερική» θεολογία των παραπομπών και των πατερικών χωρίων που χρησιμοποιούνται ως επιχειρήματα κύρους και αυθεντίας για να δικαιώσουν εξωτερικά μια θρησκευτική αντίληψη. Η ανακάλυψη των Πατέρων δεν σημαίνει ασφαλώς επιστροφή στο γράμμα των Πατέρων, αλλά μια εμπνευσμένη νέα σύνθεση ως ανακάλυψη και ερμηνεία του πατερικού ήθους και φρονήματος με σύγχρονους όρους. Πρόκειται μάλλον για μια «νεοπατερική σύνθεση» στην ίδια προοπτική με εκείνη του π. Γεωργίου Φλωρόφσκυ. Ο Παύλος Ευδοκίμωφ έβλεπε προφητικά ότι «η δημιουργική αφομοίωση της σκέψης των Πατέρων, η επαναπροσέγγιση των στοιχείων της Παράδοσης και των διαφόρων επιστημών σε μια στιβαρή σύνθεση, θα είναι ίσως το μεγαλύτερο έργο του 20ου αιώνα». «Μπροστά με τους Πατέρες της Εκκλησίας!». Η έκφραση αυτή σήμαινε για αυτόν μια γόνιμη ερμηνευτική στάση, η οποία συνέδεε το θεολογικό ήθος γόνιμα και δημιουργικά, αφενός, με τον σύγχρονο πολιτισμό και, αφετέρου, με το περιεχόμενο και τη γλώσσα της εκκλησιαστικής εμπειρίας.
