The Guerilla Star and campaign medals of Indonesia: history and symbolism of early Indonesian awards = Bintang Gerilya dan Satyalancana-Satyalancana Peristiwa: sejarah dan simbolisme tanda-tanda kehormatan bungar
The paper traces the history of the first Indonesian military award - The Guerilla Star, or Bintang Gerilya. The paper also examines the picture of Indonesian awards published on Wikipedia https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a3/Indonesian_Military_Honour.jpg . The medal bar includes the Guerilla Star and seven medals. These medals are for the Independence Wars against the Dutch and for suppressions of several uprisings since the Madiun Affair as well as for the annexation of West Irian and Confrontation with Malaysia.

The orders are political instruments, used by the political parties as tools
for governing. Consequently, they reflect the political views of those who created them. In the present paper the orders established during the reign of King Charles I are examined, trying to analyze how the ideology and political conceptions of two main parties (liberal and conservative) about social elite, merit and public reward are reflected in the manner in which those three orders were conceived. The orders under scrutiny are the Star of Romania2 (1877) and the Crown of Romania3 (1881) both created by the liberals, and the order ”Charles I”, established by a conservative government in 1906.

The victory of Tabora in 1916 has a great impact because it is the first great Belgian victory of the war. It will lead to the creation of the first Belgian campaign medal for the 14-18 campaigns.
 
On February 16, 1917, a project is submitted by the Minister of the Colonies Mr. J Renkin to King Albert for the creation of a commemorative medal for the campaign of Africa "to bring a testimony of particular concern to the soldiers and officials who have participated directly in the African campaigns of 1914, 1915 and 1916 ".

Two classes of medals are planned, one in silver for Europeans who took part directly in the military operations and a bronze medal for the Congolese who participated in the war operations.

The African Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs unveils the genesis of the creation of the medal and the various projects and this before the end of the campaign of Tabora and allow to determine the number of medals initially made in France and the number of attributions . The archives of the sculptor Arsène Matton at the Museum of Louvain-la-Neuve make us discover the drawings of the projects of the medal.

The present essay is intended to be a guide for collectors of the insignia of the three knightly Orders of Portugal from 1789 to the end of the Monarchy in 1910.

Op 27 november 1914 kreeg het Nederlandse Rode Kruis bij Koninklijk besluit toestemming op eigen eigen kosten een zichtbaar te dragen Kruis en een Medaille van Verdienste voor verdiensten in of jegens de vereniging uit te reiken.

In de 100 jaar die volgden kregen zo'n 10.000 personen een dergelijke onderscheiding. Dit boek, waaraan door een team van ongeveer 20 mensen is gewerkt, geeft kort een samenvatting van de geschiedenis van deze onderscheiding en de portretten van 20 van deze dragers.

The study encompass the information published in the awarding decrees issued for the “Aeronautical Virtue” Order and the “Aeronautical Medal”, from the moment in which Romania entered World War II, to the years which followed the peace settlement, and until the fall of the monarchy on December 30th, 1947.
Including statistical information regarding the conferral of these two awards, the study also shows significant moments from the history of both the decorations, emphasizing the merits that justified their bestowing. The study refers to both the war insignia (“with swords”), and also with “peace” insignia, for militaries as well as for civilians, also for Romanians and for foreign citizens.

Un nombre considérable de décorations étrangères (particulièrement ottomanes et russes) ont été accordées pendant la troisième – sixième décennie du 19e siècle aux différents personnalités des Principautés Roumains de Moldavie et de Valachie. Faute d’aucune distinction « à l’européenne », les princes régnants demandaient des décorations ottomanes pour leurs sujets. En même temps, les représentants diplomatiques des plusieurs pays, accrédités à Jassy et à Bucarest, demandaient leurs propres décorations pour honorer les Moldaves et Valaques qui se sont distingués dans plusieurs branches de la vie publique : militaires, dignitaires et simple fonctionnaires, membres du clergé. Il était devenu une habitude de voir tel ou tel boyard s’afficher avec l’insigne de l’Ordre turc Nichan Iftikhar des les croix russes de la Ste Anne ou du St. Stanislas (pour n’en mentionner que les ordres les plus répandus).
L’héraldique noble a aussi connu un grand essor dans l’époque, occasion pour les boyards de se faire exécuter les armoiries avec les décorations qu’ils ont reçus. L’usage des armoiries avec décorations a été fréquent dans l’Europe occidentale, mais les boyards l’ont emprunté de l’espace russe. A part les boyards, le clergé a eu aussi des armoiries avec décorations. On a identifié plusieurs types armoriaux (conçus notamment pour l’usage sigillaire), où on a vu des décorations soit autour de l’écu, soit au-dessous, soit avec l’écu posé sur l’étoile d’un ordre, soit avec d’autres combinaisons.
Nous avons essayé d’identifier plusieurs catégories armoriales, et d’illustrer chacun blason par les sources illustrées et les témoignages du temps.

Encore á ses débuts, la phaléristique roumaine offre nombre d’informations jusqu’alors inconnues.
Précédant de 14 années l’institution officielle de la médaille « Pro Virtute Militari » (destinée aux survivants de la lutte contre les Ottomans du 13 Septembre 1848) un projet pour l’institution d’un « Signe de Distinction du Service Irréprochable » a été rédigé en 1846, dans la Principauté de Moldavie, sous le règne de Michel Sturdza (1834-1849). Destinée à marquer le douzième anniversaire de l’avènement au trône du prince, la décoration était inspirée par une autre, ayant le même nom et qui avait été fondée par l’empereur Nicolas Ier de Russie en 1827. Calqué sur le Statut de la distinction russe déjà en usage, le projet moldave répondait à plusieurs motivations: consolider la position du prince dans une période de troubles politiques et de transformations sociales, le besoin de susciter des partisans et de récompenser les fidèles. L’ambition du prince Sturdza était de renforcer le prestige de son pays qui était à l’époque sous la suzeraineté de l’Empire Ottoman.
Adapter un règlement russe aux réalités autochtones n’était pas nouveau, alors que la Russie – en tant que protectrice des deux Principautés Danubiennes – avait inspirée de nombreuses pratiques politiques et d’autres normes réglementaires.
Tout comme son modèle russe, la distinction moldave avait le double intérêt de récompenser le mérite et aussi l’ancienneté. Elle devait être conférée après 12 ans de services sans faille, puis actualisée tous les six ans. Réglementée hiérarchiquement, la sélection des candidatures passait par un comité avant d’arriver sur le bureau du prince, le formalisme étant strictement observé. Toujours suivant le modèle russe, cette distinction moldave pouvait être accordée aux militaires mais aussi aux civils.
Nous ne savons pas quels furent les circonstances qui ont décidé le prince á abandonner son idée. Les temps étaient troublés, et à la vérité, il était trop tôt pour une pareille démarche. La révolution de 1848, l’union des deux Principautés et l’avènement au trône du prince Charles Ier de Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen : tous ces événements ont reportés cette initiative jusqu’en 1872. Avec une nouvelle disposition de symboles, l’insigne de 1846 a été finalement instauré, sous le nom de « Signe honorifique pour les officiers », afin de récompenser les 18 et 25 années de service militaire. Cette décoration est à l’origine du « Signe honorifique Au Service de la Patrie », médaille qui est toujours conférée aux officiers roumains, pour 15, 20 et 25 années de service militaire.

Based on the information offered by the awarding decrees published in the Romanian “Official Gazette”, from the installation of Petru Groza’s Cabinet and until the proclamation of the Republic, the study  encompass the mutual awards which marked the Romanian-Soviet approach.
Regarding the Romanian decorations offered to Soviet personalities, there are awards on the military, the political, economic and cultural grounds.
In parallel, there are also Soviet awards conferred upon the Romanians, for instance those who belonged to the “Tudor Vladimirescu” Division, a military unit having a leading role in Romania’s ”Stalinization”.

On Friday, May 13/25, 1877, shortly after Romania declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire, prince Carol I of Romania conferred the Military Virtue Medal and the newly instituted Star of Romania Order to several officers, warrant officers and soldiers, who distinguished themselves in the first days of the Romanian-Ottoman conflict upon Danube, at Olteniţa.
Held on a field near the Princely Palace of Cotroceni (in Bucharest), this military ceremony – the first of that kind, involving war decorations – was recorded and depicted by an envoy of “The Illustrated London News” (being published on Saturday, June 16, 1877).
In the illustration, Prince Carol is attaching the Military Virtue Medal to the chest of general George Manu, commander of the 4th Division, while other militaries are also waiting to be decorated.
The study reviews the chronology of the events, the names of the people decorated on this occasion, the regulations issued regarding these two awards, together with the official and press testimonies of the ceremony.

The reign of king Carol II, a monarch passionate for pump and honors, was one of the most interesting periods of the Romanian phaleristics. Many orders and medals were instituted, while other were reorganized, being introduced several regulations regarding the wearing of the insignias.
As a part of these transformations, the Royal Decree nr. 3.870/1939 settled that the career officers, direct descendants of officers who received the “Trecerea Dunării” Cross (for the War of 1877-78), or the “1916-1918 War Commemorative Cross”, were allowed to display the same war decorations, completed with a bar inscribed with the word “Tradiție” (= “Tradition”). Between 1940 and 1945, no less than 23 Royal Decrees were issued: 132 officers received the “Trecerea Dunării” Cross, 82 received the “1916-1918 War Commemorative Cross”, while 3 received both the decorations at once. While being a “great voivode of Alba Iulia”, the future king Mihai I received these decorations, as a descendant of kings Carol I and Ferdinand I.
Besides mirroring the Romanian phaleristics of the interwar period, the study deals with the genealogical research, because the Royal Decrees includes information on the filiation itself, from the initial titular of “Trecerea Dunării” Cross / the “1916-1918 War Commemorative Cross”, to the officer who has recognized in right to assume their use.

The Romanian – Danish official relations were established in 1879, immediately after our country obtained its Independence, during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. Prince Carol I’s special envoy to King Christian IX, G. Basarab-Brâncoveanu, offered the Danish monarch the newly-founded Order of the Star of Romania. In return, the Prince of Romania was decorated with the Order of the Elephant. Permanent diplomatic relations were instituted in 1917, when the Romanian minister plenipotentiary in Stockholm was also accredited in Denmark.
The study focuses on the Romanian coats of arms registered in the armorial books of the Royal Danish Orders (Elefantordenens Våbenbog and Dannebrogordenens Våbenbog), following a long established chivalric practise. It’s about the achievements of Prince Carol I of Romania and of Prince Ferdinand (while being a Crown Prince), both decorated with the Collar of the Elephant Order. The list continues with the coats of arms of seven Romanian heads of mission accredited to Copenhagen, covering a period of almost 25 years of diplomatic relations, all being decorated with the Grand Cross of the Order of Dannebrog. Besides these high-ranking diplomats, the study encompasses the achievements of three foreign diplomats having Romanian roots.

Instituted by the Decree no. 37 of January 20, 1953, “For Gallantry” Medal belonged the the first series of awards of the Romanian People’s Republic. Closely inspired by a Soviet decoration having the same name, “For Gallantry” Medal illustrates not only the features of the Romanian phaleristics during the early period of the republican régime, but also the political relations between Romania and the Soviet Union before and immediately after Stalin’s death.
Intended to reward the militaries involved with the protection of the state borders, as well as against “diversionists, spies and other enemies of the Romanian People’s Republic”. The medal was never conferred, being revoked by the Decree no. 22 of January 15, 1958, as a part of the policy of the Romanian authorities of eradicating Stalin’s legacy.

En parallèle avec la bibliographie phaléristique roumaine, la présente étude offre une autre vision de ce qu’il a été l’usage des décorations chez les Roumains, entre les premières décennies du 19e siècle et l’an 1947, qui marqua l’avènement du régime populaire.
L’étude s’appuie sur des sources littéraires, dont 65 œuvres dus aux 38 auteurs roumains, des plus obscurs jusqu’aux plus célèbres, appartenant à la période moderne de la littérature nationale. Du point de vue chronologique, les textes ont pour objet des réalités liées au régime monarchique, y compris des contributions dues aux auteurs actifs après le moment 1947.
Les fragments que nous avons passés en revue appartiennent à tous les genres littéraires: poésie, prose, théâtre, correspondance, édition de journaux. Notre étude ne se borne donc pas seulement aux personnages fictifs et aux narrations imaginaires, mais cherche toujours d’offrir la vision des créateurs littéraires sur l’histoire et la société au milieu de laquelle ils ont vécu. Le fait qu’on bon nombre d’auteurs ainsi mentionnés ont été également actifs dans la vie publique, et encore politique, donne un plus d’authenticité à leurs textes.
Après une introduction dans la matière (avec quelques exemples tirés de la littérature universelle), notre étude comprendra une succession de thèmes représentatifs pour le domaine étudié. Chacune des sections ainsi résultées est illustrée au moyen des fragments qu’on a pu rassembler, fragments rangés chronologiquement et accompagnés par des commentaires portant sur la meilleure compréhension des choses y référées. Notre étude commencera par approcher les premières mentions sur les décorations, ainsi que la diffusion de l’idée chevaleresque dans la société roumaine de jadis. A la mesure de l’ «européisation» de celle-ci, les décorations ont été conférées aux sujets des deux Principautés, puis – avec la Guerre d’Indépendence de 1877-1878 et la création d’un système autochtone des honneurs – la Roumanie moderne a eu ses propres décorés. L’attitude envers les ordres et les médailles a varié, selon les mœurs du temps et le tempérament des auteurs, du plus profond respect jusqu’à la plus acide moquerie. Les seules décorations dont on a toujours parlé avec considération sont celles conférées pour faits de guerre, notamment au cours du conflit précité, la Guerre d’Indépendence.
En conclusion, notre étude essaye d’offrir une meilleure compréhension de ce qu’ils ont été les décorations dans le monde roumain, pendant un siècle entier.

Integrated in a political structure called European Union (EU), we tend however to badly know, or even to be unaware in absolute, the history of many of our partners in this Union, although with some of them our history has some links. It seems, therefore, to be easy to infer that for a better reciprocal knowledge it is our task to prevent this situation. This was our fi rst premise, allied to the study of a striking period in European History, particularly for most of the countries that recently integrated the EU - the fi rst half of the 20th century -, this issues allied with the study of some phaleristics specimens of this period, will allow us to know better one of these new members, Hungary, pointedly the motivations
of its territorial claims in the period called Regency.
The Portuguese lagation in Budapest, opened in 1939, gave us fondamental
information about those troubled days of Hungarian history.

La satire, si elle a probablement peu emprunté à l’horoscope chinois, demeure un outil aussi puissant que féroce lorsqu’elle dénonce publiquement des mœurs hors normes ou des actes répréhensibles. Un graveur, à l’instar d’un chansonnier ou d’un écrivain, peut aussi contribuer à une opinion avec une médaille. La phaléristique étudie les distinctions honorifiques portables. Si les décorations satiriques sont si mal connues, c’est que leurs promoteurs sont souvent restés anonymes et que leurs titulaires ne se sont jamais empressés d’arborer un signe compromettant au revers de leur costume ! L’ordre du Lièvre, dans ses versions de 1832, 1914 et 1940, a contribué au genre en Belgique. L’explication de son origine, liée au siège de la citadelle d’Anvers fin 1832, a été invariablement copiée par tous les auteurs depuis Guioth. La médaille était pourtant apparue dans la foulée du désastre militaire belge d’août 1831 !

Discusses the origins of the Military Orders in the Kingdom of Portugal and its evolution, including the concession to the Kings of Portugal, by the Papacy of its administration and governorship, in 1551. Briefly analyses the reasons for the decay of the Orders' prestige and the attempts made for its reform during the XVIII century discussing the proposals made by the diplomat Dom Luís da Cunha. The impact of the Reform of the Military Orders under Queen D. Maria II, in 1789, is also discusseed, with an analysis of its main aspects and the new insignia, namely the Riband of the Theree Orders, informally established as the Royal insignia as Grand-Master of the Orders. The consequences of the Reform and the its impact in the nature of the ancient military orders is discussed - they became orders of knighthood of an hybrid nature. Finally the new orders of knighthood created by the Prince Regent Dom João in the early XIX century are accounted for.

O estudo sublinha a importância histórica e falerística das insígnias de Grã-Cruz da Ordem Militar de Cristo que pertenceram ao Marechal do Império Michel Ney que foram vendidas em leilão, em Paris, em 2012. Analisando as origens da criação do grau de grã-cruz nas antigas ordens militares em 1789, e descrevendo as respectivas insígnias, o livro examina com recurso às fontes disponíveis, mormente as iconográficas, as quais permitem estabelecer o modelo das primeiras medalhas ou distintivos da banda de grã-cruz encomendados e entregues, acentuando que aparentemente nenhum sobreviveu até aos nossos dias. Comparando a medalha ou distintivo das insígnias de Ney com imagens de insígnias contemporâneas da Reforma, incluindo a que D. Manuel Godoy ostenta no seu famoso retrato pintado por Goya, em 1801, o livro enfatiza o seu extremo valor falerístico enquanto uma das peças mais antigas existentes, com proveniência comprovada. A Placa bordada da Ordem constante do Catálogo do leilão, bem como outra integrada nas colecções do Museu de Estado do Hermitage, em S. Petersburgo, que pertenceram a Ney, são igualmente discutidas e analisadas sublinhando-se o seu valor falerístico e a sua raridade. Finalmente, traça-se um breve relato do fim trágico do Marechal Ney, um dos grandes Generais da época Napoleónica.

La présente étude passe en revue les données relatives à l’histoire de l’héraldique de l’État roumain, à partir de l’époque qui a précédé la Guerre de l’Indépendance, et jusqu’au moment de l’avènement de la Grande Roumanie. Les armoiries de Roumanie de 1867, 1872 et 1921 s’inscrivent dans l’évolution séculaire de l’héraldique princière roumaine moldo-valaque, marquant une conception moderne des autorités face aux symboles publiques: les armoiries ont été soumises aux débats, étant légiférées par le Parlement, puis publiées dans la « Gazette Officielle ». De facto, les armoiries de 1872 ont subi nombre de modifications, dont la plus notable fut l’ajout de l’insigne de l’Ordre de l’Etoile de Roumanie, distinction instituée en 1877, immédiatement après la proclamation de l’Indépendance. Pourtant, tout le long du règne du prince, puis roi Carol Ier, aucune modification législative ne fut-elle pas apportée aux armes restées en usage dès l’époque de la domination ottomane ; par conséquent, ni l’Ordre précité de l’Etoile, ni l’Ordre de la Couronne de Roumanie (institué en 1881), ni l’Ordre portant le nom même du premier roi (institué en 1906), ne sont pas entrés de jure dans la composition du blason officiel. Apres la Grande Guerre, les choses ont changé. En 1921, le Parlement de la Grande Roumanie a voté le projet concernant les nouveaux symboles héraldiques de l’Etat, suite à l’accroissement du territoire national. En même temps, les armoiries de la Grande Roumanie – « ancêtre » direct du blason actuel, institué en 1992 et modifié en 2016 – ont eu le mérite de respecter les usages occidentaux dans la matière des armoiries des souverains. Ainsi, le Collier de l’Ordre de Carol Ier, distinction suprême de l’Etat, entre 1906 et 1947, a été représenté autour de l’écu, illustrant l’idée que le souverain était à la tête de l’Ordre. Outre cela, les armoiries de 1921 fournissent un second message phaléristique, message qu’on peut deviner en analysant les couronnes royales qui y sont représentées, à savoir la Couronne d’Acier, dans un plan inférieur, et une autre couronne royale, cette fois en or et pierreries, posée au-dessus du manteau de pourpre, et donc dans le plan supérieur de la composition. Les deux couronnes sont également personnalisées à l’aide des décorations de guerre: la Couronne d’Acier est sommée par la Croix du Passage de la Danube, donnée aux combattants de la Guerre de l’Indépendance, tandis que la deuxième couronne royale est sommée, à son tour, par la Croix Commémorative de la Guerre de 1916-1918. Analysées de ce coté, les deux couronnes – de la deuxième nous n’avons aucunes données à part une photographie de 1936 – évoquent, de bas en haut, deux moments des plus importants dans l’histoire politique moderne: l’Indépendance et la Guerre Mondiale qui a fait possible la Grande Roumanie.

In the present article we try to analyse the profound Phaleristics revolution, military and civilian, occurred during Dom Carlos kingdom. From 1891 until the end of his own kingdom several decorations were created or reformed, showing that fair public reconnaissance was, undoubtedly, one of the main concerns of his leadership, a time, during what Portugal changed a lot.

La bibliographie sur les anciens ordres de chevalerie du royaume de France est rare car, après 1830, les ordres de l'ancienne monarchie ont presque tombé dans l'oubli. Louis Philippe d'Orléans, fils du régicide Philippe Égalité, nommé par Charles X Lieutenant-général du Royaume, et plus tard par invitation de la Chambre des députés roi des Français, a de fait remplacé l'Ordre du Saint Esprit et l'Ordre de Saint Michel, par la Légion d'Honneur. Les ouvres publiées relèvent surtout des études nobiliaires, concernant l'histoire de l'ordre, la liste des chevaliers et prélats, les cérémonies d'investiture, la description sommaire des insignes et les armoriaux 1. Il a fallu attendre les études du baron Hervé Pinoteau – auteur du Préface-publiées au dernier quart du XXe siècle, basés sur des recherches menés aux Archives, pour connaître en profondeur non seulement l'histoire des ordres du Roi, et en particulier de l'Ordre du Saint Esprit sous la Restauration, mais aussi la phaléristique des ordres et son symbolisme 2. Mais c'est Patrick Spilliaert, illustre phaleriste, qui a repris la flamme en entreprenant des recherches systématiques sur divers Archives

The newly implanted Republic abolished the orders of merit of the monarchy considered as incompatible with the republican egalitarian idelogy. The paper discusses the reestablishement of the orders, as orders of merit, by the Republican governement, including the highly prestiged Order of the Tower and Sword as a consequence of Portugal's entry in the Great War, in 1916.
Then analyses the order's awards connected with deeds in the Great War both to Portuguese and to foreigners and compares it with the awards of another highly prestigious medal - the War Cross.

Resumo:
O autor revela nesta comunicação alguns documentos inéditos de arquivos e bibliotecas nacionais do Brasil e de Portugal, que contam a verdadeira génese da Real Ordem da Torre e Espada, de Valor e Lealdade, criada em 1808, no Rio de Janeiro, acompanhando os seus primeiros passos, o desenho das suas insígnias e as condecorações concedidas por D. João, até se transformar na mais prestigiada Ordem Militar europeia do período da Guerra Peninsular. Dos 964 agraciados com as insígnias da Real Ordem nos seus três graus de Grã-cruz, Comendador e Cavaleiro, mais de metade foram-no durante a permanência da Corte no Brasil. As atribuições das insígnais e as nomeações na Ordem revelam facetas desconhecidas da historiografia portuguesa e brasileira, impondo a Real Ordem da Torre e Espada, de Valor e Lealdade, como uma Ordem Honorífica e Militar luso-brasileira.

In this paper the author reveals some unpublished documents from national archives and libraries in Brazil and Portugal that uncover the true origins of the Royal Portuguese Order of the Tower and Sword, for Valour and Loyalty, created in 1808 in Rio de Janeiro, following its first steps, the design of its insignia and the decorations granted by D. João, until becoming the most prestigious European Military Order of the Peninsular War. Of the 964 graced with the insignia of the Royal Order in their three classes of Knight Grand Cross, Knight Commander and Knight, more than half were awarded during the stay of the Court in Brazil. The assignments of the insignia and the appointments in the Order reveal new facets unknown in the Portuguese and Brazilian historiography, imposing the Royal Order of the Tower and Sword, for Valour and Loyalty, as a Portuguese-Brazilian Honorary and Military Order.

The tradition of Romanian commemorative decorations begins a century and a half ago, with the establishment of the Medal “Pro virtute militari” (1860). Since then, under all forms of government, the Romanian state has established various distinctions paying homage to the birth of a personality, the beginning of a reign, political, military, economic
or social events, etc.
The end of the last century and the beginning of the current one meant the achievement of the national system of awards of Romania. The year 2000 was particularly favorable for the establishment of orders, medals and honorary signs.
In parallel, in 2000 occurred not only the 150th anniversary of the birth of the poet Mihai Eminescu (a commemorative medal bearing his name being instituted and conferred), but also the 400th anniversary of the Union of the three Principalities, made by Michael the Brave – a historical moment having, until today, a deep symbolic significance.
In the spring of 2000, wanting to properly mark the memory of this prince, a group of senators initiated a legislative project wishing to establish a commemorative medal. Unfortunately, this initiative exceeded all reasonable deadlines (given the fulfillment of the parliamentary procedures), the project being definitively rejected at the beginning of 2002.
