El objeto del presente artículo es en lo fundamental un intento de reconstrucción de la imagen más establemente difundida que se tiene de Filipinas en el continente europeo. Esto, al menos parcialmente, es referible al nivel del ciudadano medio, o al nivel de conocimientos más fácilmente accesible a ese estrato social. Para ello se han tomado como referencia las fuentes enciclopédicas de dos de las dos lenguas europeas más habladas en el mundo, es decir el español y el inglés. Parece imprescindible dejar constancia de este dato puesto que su expansión lingüística no es disociable de la influencia que, tanto la cultura anglosajona como la hispana, han ejercido, y todavía ejercen, mediante la transmisión de contenidos culturales e ideológicos, así como de principios organizativos sociales, políticos y económicos, explícitos en sus actuaciones en dichos campos, pero también implícitos en el idioma, en todas las áreas geográficas en las que es evidente el legado de su presencia de antaño. El criterio selectivo de las fuentes responde, pues, a su mayor grado de difusión y, consecuentemente, de los conceptos divulgados en sus artículos. Así, las obras que se analizan a continuación son, en cuanto a la lengua inglesa, la Enciclopedia Británica, en sus versiones Macropaedia y Micropaedia, a las que, por las razones que se expondrán después, se ha añadido la versión de la misma en lengua española, es decir la Enciclopedia Hispánica; y, por otra parte, el Espasa como principal fuente modernamente tradicional de información en el espacio geográfico correspondiente a la lengua española.

Indigenous people across the globe have engaged in a constant struggle to take control of natural resources and land against intrusion by external developers, state interest and commercial pressures brought up by practices such as mining and agribusiness (Meilasari-Sugiana, 2018). The main purpose of this research paper is to discuss how Thomas Pogge's argument on the Global Justice applies to the case of indigenous people from the Philippines and their struggle to protect their natural resources. The paper will use a designed case study to demonstrate the enactment gap between the indigenous peoples’ rights in practice and law and the role of stakeholders in safeguarding the land belonging to the indigenous group. A case study of Higaonon indigenous tribe was selected for the study due to various mining and palm oil agribusiness activities in the region and the struggle to retain the land. The research methodology involved gathering information from tribal leaders'  representatives and members of the focus groups and researching previous informant interviews with governmental bodies and non-governmental organizations on the matter in question. The study results show conflicting interests among different government bodies; laws and mandate of various government bodies are contradicting resulting in poor coordination between them. It is also noted that there is a lack of political will and resources to implement the provisions in the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act. The indigenous peoples’ land tenure insecurity is also found to be a disunity factor.

This article analyses the presence in Manila of Armenian merchants from New Julfa, and aims to bring together Spanish primary sources and the rich historiography on the Julfan trade diaspora. Attracted by the silver arriving from Acapulco, Armenians played an important commercial role in the Philippines. We address their complicated relationship with the Spanish authorities, their participation in both inter-Asiatic and trans-Pacific exchanges, and their life experiences as told in their own words before the court of the Spanish Inquisition in Manila.

本研究從家庭、工作兩方面探討在臺菲律賓籍女性移工的境遇以及她們在面臨困境下發展出哪些生存策略加以因應。家庭方面，探討在遠距情形下，移工母親發展出哪些維繫家庭與執行母職的策略，使自己不在場的影響力降到最低；在工作方面，探討這群教育程度相對高的移工如何在心理上調適工作高成低就的落差，以及如何協商出新的自我價值。研究發現，移工母親除了向內安排支持網絡外，更向外找尋協助以保護小孩免於家族權利義務的糾葛、透過通訊科技片段式地參與孩子的生活、設立明確的規範與不斷地說明來確保教養的正常運行，她們也將教養的內容連結到身為移工的處境，以換取小孩自律的允諾，這都是順應遠距所因應而生的母職策略。在工作上，移工透過許多心理認知層面上的「區隔」過程，創造出群我之別，這些區隔包含移工與非移工、家務移工與廠工、菲律賓籍移工與其他國籍移工，以及在哪裡擔任移工等，往下的比較使她們在心理上獲取優勢地位感，往上比較則提供未來美景的投射，建構解釋現況的合理認知架構。

This paper discusses how female overseas Filipino workers(OFWs) struggle for their family and work, and how they develop strategies of survival to work out these struggles. We first discuss what strategies overseas mothers develop to maintain family bonding and to mother from afar. We then try to describe how OFWs adapt the gap between their higher education level and low-skilled work and how they develop new self values as overseas workers. We found the strategies overseas mothers develop include seeking both inside and outside family network for support, which help their children avoid the complicated rights and duties of the tangled kinship, using multimedia to participate in their children’s lives, constantly lecturing on social norms to ensure discipline, and explaining their situation as overseas workers to win self- discipline from children. As to work, OFWs maintain their self-esteem by differentiating, even stratifying from others. These differentiation includes overseas/non-overseas, domestic/factory, Filipino/non-Filipino, work-in-Asia/not- work-in-Asia workers. They acquire senses of superiority by comparing downward and hope by comparing upward. In doing so, they provide themselves a reasonable cognitive framework for explaining their status quo.

Durante más de tres siglos la corona española se esforzó por mantener su presencia en lo que fueron las posesiones imperiales más alejadas de la metrópoli, las Islas Filipinas.
Las particularidades de aquellas remotas tierras hicieron que la evangelización supusiese una de las principales justificaciones, si no la principal, para explicar el interés del rey en conservarlas en el imperio.  Debido a esto las órdenes religiosas ejercieron una especial influencia en las posesiones asiáticas de la corona, actuando en muchas ocasiones como intermediarias entre los distintos grupos de población que habitaban las islas y que eran principalmente españoles, indios filipinos y chinos sangleyes. Pero las órdenes religiosas también actuaron como grupos de presión frente a esta compleja población produciéndose situaciones de conflictividad.
A pesar de los más de tres siglos de presencia española en el archipiélago filipino, el imperio hispánico nunca fue capaz de crear un sistema efectivo de colonización en las islas ante la diversidad de situaciones tanto económicas como sociales y culturales que unos y otros grupos de población no supieron o quisieron entender, presos de los prejuicios, la ignorancia, la avaricia, etc.
Con este breve estudio, que es parte de uno más amplio, me propongo analizar cómo el desconocimiento antropológico del otro, el desinterés por la cultura de un importante sector de la población como eran los chinos sangleyes, y la intransigencia religiosa de las órdenes, pudieron poner en jaque a la colonia entera por un problema tan aparentemente trivial como es el cabello.
Para llevar a cabo este estudio me he servido tanto de las investigaciones de expertos filipinistas y sinólogos como de documentación de primera mano procedente del Archivo General de Indias, consultado el fondo de la Audiencia de Filipinas, y del Archivo Histórico Nacional, para la documentación perteneciente a la Colección Documentos de Indias.

This study was conducted to assess and optimize the conveyance performance of major irrigation systems in the case of the NIA-Magat River Integrated Irrigation System in the Philippines. Options Analysis in Irrigation System (OASIS) was used to evaluate and optimize the conveyance efficiency of the system. Management and modernization scenarios were undertaken in the irrigation system assuming that the rehabilitation projects exerted efforts on improving efficiencies and reduced losses in the conveyance and distribution systems. Based on the results, the actual condition of the irrigation system as the reference of improvement will have 1,365,759 million cubic meters diversion supply from MARIIS and Baligatan diversion dams. Having been improved from 76% of conveyance efficiency to 95% assumed result of the improvement measures, approximately 84,303 million cubic meters or 6% increase from the actual diversion requirement can be realized. With every 1% increase in conveyance efficiency, there will be approximately 33,831 cubic meters savings in irrigation diversion requirements. This could be achieved through canal repairs of damaged structures, the lining of earth canals, and modernization of control structures. The OASIS program has shown its ability to assess the effects of irrigation management and modernization in a large irrigation system that can serve as a science-based planning and decision-making support program. It may also be used to study the management and optimization of irrigation in other irrigation systems in the country and elsewhere in the world.

The subject of this article is to present an issue of Muslim separatism in the Philippine archipelago. A uniqueness of the issue is a centuries-old tradition of Muslim political structures in Philippines connected with ongoing Muslim people’s aspirations for emancipation. The local Muslim separatism, despite unambiguous invoking to the past, is based on dominant trends in global separatist and independence movements – starting from a resistance against aggressor (historical), through the decolonization motivated by Marxist ideology (the Moro National Liberation Front), to the Islamic fundamentalism (the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, Abu Sayyaf Group). The author discusses contemporary aspirations of Muslim separatists in Philippines and invokes their history. He makes a fundamental division basing on Philippine Muslim separatists internal diversity. The division is grounded on attitude of particular separatist groups to the Republic of the Philippines as a state. The Author divides them into these movements which strive for autonomy in the Philippine state and these which strive for a separate state based on Islamic religion and law. In this context the text contains presentation of separatist organizations like the Moro National Liberation Front, the Islamic Moro Liberation Front and the Abu Sayyaf Group.

This essay explores the Philippines’s geopolitical orientation vis-à-vis late nineteenth-century Spain amid nation-building efforts and changing maritime infrastructure. The period in question represents a turning point for Spain’s transpacific empire, not only because of the emergent political discourse on nationhood, but also because, following the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, state actors and intellectuals alike began to experience and engage with the once-remote colony differently. I argue that the Suez Canal, which profoundly changed the temporal-spatial contours of empire, prompted writers, artists, and statesmen on both sides of the Pacific to imagine empire through the trope of intimacy.
