Portico

The urban landscape of Bologna is marked by 38 km of porticoes, built over a thousand years. Still today, they are an interesting example of private property structure for public use. Porticoes started during the twelfth century as a private initiative, in order to obtain more habitable space on the upper floors of the houses. Over centuries, the porticoes assumed specific qualifications, depending on the function of the buildings. Rustic medieval wooden porticoes are still preserved, while the refined Renaissance porticoes were the main vehicle for the penetration of the classical style into the city. After mixed fortunes in their conservation, in 1969 Pierluigi Cervellati made them the cornerstone of a detailed analysis of the conditions of the entire city centre. Today, the nomination of the porticoes of Bologna as a UNESCO World Heritage Site aims to put them into the international limelight, with a hybrid operation between conservation and marketing.

In three seasons, spring 2004, fall 2004 to spring 2005 and in spring 2006, the Colossi of Memnon and Amenhotep III Temple Conservation Project continued excavation and conservation at the Colossi of Memnon, at the Second Pylon and in the area of the Peristyle and Hypostyle. The base of the Second Pylon in brick was discovered, preserved I m above ground level. We uncovered a part of the facade of the northern wing, with two niches for the flag masts, as well as the back part of the north wing, with a later lime pit. The torso of the northern colossus weighing 450 t was lifted 3.12 m above the antique ground, using air cushions, then moved 11.50 m northward to free the island of gravel on which it was lifted for future excavation. The south colossus was partly uncovered. Thousands of fragments, decorated and undecorated, were recovered and stored; they are under study and documentation. This paper examines the influence of masonry infill panels on the natural period of vibration of multi-storey frames in relation to seismic load resistance. Simple analytical expressions are presented to evaluate the natural period of these types of structures with varying number of bays and stories. Results obtained with the proposed formulae were found to correlate well with numerical values obtained from a dynamic analysis program. Compte-rendu des travaux archeologiques (sondages au niveau des portiques, de la place, de la basilique) de l’agora superieure de Xanthos. Comme le suggeraient des etudes anterieures soulignant la rarete des vestiges hellenistiques a Xanthos par rapport au site voisin de Letoon, ces travaux confirment que le site, bien qu'occupe des l'epoque classique, connait son reel developpement a l’epoque romaine.
