The hymns and prayers of the Ancient Near East and the Old Testament are unique testimonies of human self and world experience. The article starts with the question of how to compare these texts, which belong to different cultures, languages and times. In the second section, the subject is concretized and deepened on the one hand by means of hymns (Ps 36, Egyptian hymns of the New Kingdom) and, on the other hand, by means of pleas (Ps 38, Mesopotamian Suilla-prayers to Ištar). Finally, basic rules for a thorough comparison of religious history are formulated.

Four types of relation between psalm-text and image are listed and illustrated: 1. A (daily) experience/image becomes a textual image (e.g. Ps 131); 2. an image of art becomes a textual image (e.g. Ps 91); 3. a textual motif becomes an art-motif (e.g. Ps 84); 4. the form of the text insinuates an image (e.g. Ps 67).

Il verbo "volgarizzare" non entrò mai nel vasto e colto vocabolario dan-tesco. Nell'approntare una sua teoria della traduzione, il difensore della lingua del sì gli preferì invece vocaboli tecnici ben più precisi: translare e transmutare. Entrambi i termini appartengono al gergo della retorica e dell'ars dictaminis. A queste arti risale anche il termine "laidezza" con il quale Dante definisce il volga-rizzamento di Taddeo Alderotti. A partire da queste constatazioni e da uno studio delle loro connotazioni, il saggio raccoglie alcune riflessioni sulle possibili ra-gioni e sulle ricadute di tali scelte linguistiche, approdando a considerazioni sul ruolo che la sonorità, la bellezza e l'interpretazione, nonché la scelta delle fonti, sembrerebbero avere svolto sulla formazione di una teoria o di un'idea di tradu-zione in Dante. Si considera anche l'importanza delle glosse e dell'esegesi sull'o-perato di Dante come traduttore. The verb "vulgarize" does not belong to Dante's vast and cultured vocabulary. Formulating his theory of translation, the poet preferred using more precise technical terms: translare and transmutare. Both belong to the jargon of rhetoric and ars dictaminis. The term "laidezza," with which Dante defines the vulga-rization of Taddeo Alderotti, also belongs to these arts. Queste osservazioni non considerano l'evoluzione del pensiero dan-tesco su traduzione, retorica e poetica nell'intero arco della sua opera, ma provano a tracciare, pur riconoscendone la problematicità, un percorso per sommi capi che dal Convivio arriva, senza soluzione di continuità, alla Commedia. La scelta del Convivio è motivata dal fatto, piuttosto noto ed evidente, che proprio in questo trattato Dante avvia una riflessione sulla traduzione, se non sistematica, certamente significativa. È inoltre opportuno sottolineare che nel considerare alcuni casi di pratica della traduzione in Dante mi occuperò principalmente della traduzione di citazioni dirette, e non delle libere riscritture. Senza la guida esperta di Gaia Tomazzoli e Antonio Montefu-sco non mi sarei cimentata in un'impresa lontana dai miei specialismi: li ringrazio per la fiducia e la pazienza. A range of purported David imagery appeared on the Irish stone monuments of the early Middle Ages. Identification of these figures is often debatable but rarely in the case of scenes showing David with a harp composing the psalms. This image had an established form which is confirmed by previous and contemporaneous painting, mainly in manuscripts, made across Europe.

The use of images of David and his harp on Irish stone sculpture was apt given the important role psalms played in monastic practice. From an early point in the development of Christian monasticism, daily recitation of the Psalter was required. Selections of verses were offered in accordance with the liturgical calendar. In the ninth century, practice at some Irish institutions was altered. Rather than saying a few
of the psalms each day, the Tallaght Memoir recommended that the most observant monks recite the entire Psalter, in three sections, on a daily basis.  This shift in monastic practice in Ireland is dated to the same period in which many of the monuments where David appears as a musician were carved. Several of these sculptures were made for ecclesiastical sites thought to have been influenced by documents such as the Tallaght Memoir. Much as these texts expressed the
reconsideration of monastic identity through a reflection on monastic tradition and practice, the sculptured stones made visual proclamations of monastic values.

Regular, informal experiences of these images provided opportunities for meditation on these themes. Representations of David as the Psalmist on Irish monumental sculpture will be considered in the context of their performativity within a monastic setting.
