This paper describes the RT-LAB real-time simulator implementation of the Hardware-In-the-Loop simulation of a fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle system with several 10 kHz converters. The paper demonstrates the necessity to use special IGBT bridge models that implements interpolation techniques within fixed time step simulation scheme. The paper reports on the latest advances from Opal-RT to simulate this kind of system with a 10 µs sample time. HIL computational time measurement are provided as well as a model fidelity comparison made by Toyota Motor Corp. of the RT-LAB Electrical Drive Simulator versus an actual fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle. In this paper, we describe an the methodology and simulation techniques used to make the real-time simulation of a fuel-cell hybrid vehicle with DC-DC converter and several PMSM inverter drives running with 10 kHz carrier frequency. The paper is organized in the following manner. First, typical problems regarding the real-time simulation ...

This article is concerned with the design and implementation of multimodal user interfaces. The use of multiple modalities such as vision, speech and gesture opens a vast world of possibilities in user interface design. Although the potential for innovation is high, the current understanding of how to design and build multimodal user interfaces is still primitive. The power and versatility of multimodal interfaces result in an increased complexity that current design methods and tools do not address appropriately. In this article we present the INTUITION design process for multimodal interaction. We then present the tools that are dedicated to several phases of our design process. In particular we focus on the tools for developing multimodal interfaces and the resulting software architecture of a developed multimodal interface. In the INTUITION project, our main application domain is military and we focus on the design and development of multimodal interaction for military aircraft ...

This comprehensive article deals with the important field of control systems engineering education. Efforts have been made to present some historical perspectives, major concepts and thoughts on a practical curriculum when this field is viewed as a discipline. Also discussed are curricular issues including typical laboratory systems with emphasis on the role of simulation, logic and sequencing, and real-time simulation. An elaborate section is devoted to CACE software, its role in teaching and learning, potential shortfalls, and trends in software development and use. Views from industry are sought in terms of desirable skills in the practicing engineer and continuing education needs. A survey of a few academic programs and a complete list of textbooks in control over the past three decades appear in the appendices.

Computer aided Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools have been used since the late 1950's. The asynchronous plot of simulations and the corresponding results consumes a large amount of engineering cycle time; additionally, applying FEA parameters on a 3D CAD model with 2D mouse/keyboard has always been a complex process. This paper presents the prototype of a software toolkit that performs real-time FEA simulations, the software is associated with Virtual Reality (VR) technologies which gives users a better sense of spatial presence. Interactive product design and real-time FEA is discussed in this paper.

The problem of control and management of railway transportation is a complex task with major outcomes in a modern society. Trains are suitable for transporting peoples and goods with a good trade-off between cost and rapidity. A railway system consists of a network of tracks, list of stations, safety devices (signals, sensors, etc) and a set of trains. Trains moves from one station to other along the network. Distributed applications are applicable in case of large systems.

In this paper we present a virtual instrument used to study the dynamics of systems through modeling and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation. For a D.C. motor is made, in Matlab environment, the mathematical model and this is included in virtual instrument like a Matlab script. The same virtual instrument, through PCI-6024E data acquisition card, ensure comparisons on front panel between results obtained by simulation with measured values of their.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are widely used worldwide for a board range of civil and military applications. There continues to be a growing demand for reliable and low cost UAV systems. This is especially true for small-size mini UAV systems where majority of systems are still deployed as prototypes due to their lack of reliability. Improvement in the modeling, testing

The paper summarizes experiences in the development of a real- time simulator which underlies the implementation of novel traffic information systems. The research project was carried out in collaboration between the Helsinki University of Technology (HUT)/ Laboratory of Transportation Engineering and the Nottingham Trent University (NTU)/ Department of Computing during a one year period from September 1997. The HUTSIM microscopic simulation model was interfaced to the SCOOT-urban traffic control system providing real-time traffic data through the Distributed Shared Memory system (DIME) developed at NTU. The emphasis of this paper is on presenting the principles of interfacing micro-simulation model to real-time field measurements, demonstrating a prototype implementation and outlining the range of information services that can be provided on the basis of such a system.
