Research in Higher Education

Since the days of Talcott Parsons (1973), Joseph Ben-David (1977) and Burton Clark (1983), higher education research has been deeply rooted in the analysis of individual national higher education systems and in their comparison. For a long time this has been an appropriate and fruitful approach, since in many countries of the world higher education has predominantly been organised as a service of the public sector, and universities and other higher education institutions have been mainly regarded as national institutions. But this approach becomes inadequate in our days. This is one of the arguments which will be made in this chapter.
To suggest a more convincing approach and to establish systems theoretical perspectives on higher education policy and governance, the following sections will explain the need to avoid methodological nationalism (1), sketch some core concepts of sociological systems theory (2), which are applied to define universities and nation states (3). These definitions will be used to further elaborate on the relationships of universities to education, science and nation state (4), and reflect upon the ways in which these relationships are changing due to the emergence of a world system of universities (5). A conclusion will summarise the main claim of this chapter (6), that sociological systems theory is the most adequate theoretical approach to analyse new relations of reciprocal observation in the global university system.

Doing research is one of the tasks of lecturers at universities and colleges, including Nam Dinh College of Education. The college's self-assessment report for the period of 2013-2017 reflects some limitations in scientific research, such as: the number of lecturers participating in scientific research is not much and only focuses on several people; funding is limited; the practical values of a number of research topics are not high. What are the real reasons for these shortcomings? The survey results show the influence of different factors on the effectiveness of scientific research, the degree of difficulty of some tasks in the educational scientific research process as well as suggestions on research direction for lecturers. Mở đầu Giảng dạy và nghiên cứu khoa học (NCKH) được coi là hai nhiệm vụ chủ yếu của giảng viên (GV) đại học và cao đẳng sư phạm. Điều đó được thể hiện rõ trong Thông tư số 47/2014/TT-BGDĐT ngày 31/12/2014 của Bộ GD-ĐT quy định về chế độ làm việc của GV. Ở góc độ xã hội, nếu các GV công bố được những công trình nghiên cứu có ý nghĩa sẽ nâng cao vị thế và uy tín của chính bản thân mình, đồng thời khẳng định vị thế và uy tín của trường với xã hội. Vì thế, một trong những tiêu chí để đánh giá, xếp hạng các trường đó chính là hoạt động NCKH và chuyển giao công nghệ của GV. Đối với công tác giảng dạy, qua NCKH, GV sẽ hiểu sâu hơn và cập nhật những nội dung mới về chuyên môn, đồng thời có điều kiện mở rộng, hiểu biết nhiều hơn từ những kiến thức từ các chuyên ngành khác. Từ quá trình nghiên cứu đến việc viết và trình bày kết quả nghiên cứu tại hội nghị, hội thảo và gửi các tạp chí khoa học, GV sẽ phát triển tư duy, năng lực sáng tạo, khả năng làm việc độc lập, trau dồi tri thức và các phương pháp nhận thức khoa học của GV, kĩ năng trình thuyết trình, phản biện,… Việc tham gia các sinh hoạt học thuật có thể giúp GV hình thành mạng lưới cộng tác, hỗ trợ trong nghiên cứu. Như vậy, có thể khẳng định, NCKH vừa là nhiệm vụ nhưng cũng là nhu cầu tự thân của GV. Mặc dù các GV đều nhận thức được ý nghĩa của NCKH và nhiệm vụ này đã được thể chế hóa trong các văn bản quy định về nhiệm vụ của GV, nhưng thực tế số lượng GV nghiên cứu và công bố kết quả nghiên cứu của mình ở Trường Cao đẳng Sư phạm Nam Định chưa nhiều và không đồng đều, chất lượng công trình được công bố chưa cao. Trong khi đó, về trình độ chuyên môn của đội ngũ GV nhà trường đảm bảo yêu cầu về giảng dạy và NCKH. Với mục đích nâng cao hiệu quả NCKH và tăng số lượng công trình nghiên cứu được công bố của đội ngũ GV nhà trường, từ tháng 4/2019 đến nay chúng tôi đã triển khai nghiên cứu thực trạng, phân tích nguyên nhân dẫn đến những hạn chế để xây dựng hệ thống biện pháp khắc phục hạn chế. 2. Kết quả nghiên cứu 2.1. Phương pháp nghiên cứu-Phương pháp nghiên cứu lí thuyết: Thu thập và phân tích dữ liệu thu thập từ các công trình nghiên cứu, báo cáo tự đánh giá của trường giai đoạn 2013-2017, số liệu thống kê hàng năm của Phòng Khoa học-Công nghệ của Trường và các nguồn thông tin tư liệu khác. Các dữ liệu này được hệ thống hóa, phân tích, tổng hợp nhằm phục vụ cho đề tài nghiên cứu.-Phương pháp nghiên cứu thực tiễn: Phương pháp điều tra bằng bảng hỏi được sử dụng để ý kiến của GV trong trường về hoạt động NCKH. Tổng số người trả lời là 72 GV (chiếm 75% tổng số GV tại thời điểm hiện tại) thuộc tất cả các đơn vị, bao gồm GV ở các đơn vị chuyên môn và kiêm nhiệm giảng dạy ở các phòng chức năng, các lãnh đạo đơn vị. Phiếu lấy ý kiến được thiết kế trên nền tảng Google Form để thuận tiện cho việc trả lời và tổng hợp ý kiến.

This article investigates Moroccan university students‟ grammatical competence. It verifies a hypothesis stating that after at least five years of explicit instruction of grammar, students should still retain grammatical knowledge. To do so, Swan and Baker‟s Grammar Scan Expert tests were administered to 73 students almost a year after their last course of grammar. Results show that they scored quite well in some structures and that they benefited from both explicit and implicit instruction. However, they scored lower than expected in the grammar structures covered in the four grammar courses they had taken in semesters 1 through 4.

The aim of this session is to present the results of a three-fold case study that was performed in Italy (University of Bologna), the United Kingdom (London School of Economics) and The Netherlands (University of Tilburg).

The case study was taken up to be able to look at how the role of 'Blended Professionals' (BPs) is conceptualised in practice, following the work of Celia Whitchurch who was one of the first to introduce this concept.

There are many definitions of what a BP can be and even so many manifestations of them, however, in the context of this case study we have chosen to define BPs as those persons in academia that 1) have received a PhD but have decided to leave the academic profession and have taken up a job in administration or support staff; 2) are engaged in a professional PhD track, expressing the wish to combine both academic and professional work and expertise and/or 3) can be described as 'hybrid researchers', moving between the realms of academic knowledge, on the one hand, and non-academic knowledge, on the other hand.  Contextual circumstances and developments in higher education policy, such as the decrease of academic positions combined with an increase in the number of people acquiring a PhD, the increase in the demand of generating societal impact in scientific research and the call upon universities to collaborate with non-academic partners, lead to a steady rise of BPs in nowadays academia. BPs form a group of highly skilled professionals in nowadays academia, but seem nonetheless to have their 'identity' challenged, as they don't fit easily into either an academic or administrative/professional role but they are more likely to be in between the two depending on the job.

The threefold case study consisted of face-to-face semi-structured interviews with a total of 15 respondents. Research questions were related to 1) identity and perception of belonging to either the academic realm or the professional/administrative one, or both; 2) issues of freedom and control; 3) the perception of the unique and indispensable contribution that BPs make to their Higher Education Institutes.
With the session, we aim at not only presenting the results of the case study but also to discuss the outcomes with the audience. Discussion helps us to assess whether the case study findings resonate with the EARMA members (many of them BPs as well) and provides the opportunity to bring the research further in terms of new research questions and new theoretical insights.

Ensuring the success of high-risk college students is important for individuals, universities, and society at large. To ensure degree attainment, educational leaders must identify and understand the factors that contribute to student retention to degree. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to explore the personal and campus related supports described by high-risk students.  The research was conducted at a large, public, doctoral intensive university in Southern California that admits freshmen under two different admissions criteria. Eight students admitted in the university’s lower admissions cohort were interviewed. The interplay between student resilience and self-efficacy, with engagement and acquisition of social capital were identified as critical factors in student retention and degree attainment.

The Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) was formed by an amalgamation of teaching institutions in 2003. Research is central to RUB policy. Studies have shown that RUB faculty are variable in their response to the requirement to add research to their workload. While improvements have been made challenges to research output have been identified. This article intends to bring up to date the state of research at RUB. Data were gathered through an online survey of RUB faculty (n=206) and semi-structured interviews with the college Presidents (n=5), and Deans of Research and Industrial Linkages (n=8). Findings show that improvement continues but that many challenges remain including some that have been identified earlier. Suggestions for further improvement and research are presented.

A comparative, historical study of three German liberal education initatives, the financial and institutional crises they faced, and how they survived them.

Studies of higher education by scholars based in Asia have been growing in volume, following worldwide trends. To a large extent, this growth has been driven by East Asian countries, but little is known about the characteristics of the contribution of these countries. This study analyses their overall and specific contribution. The paper concludes that systemic development and its internationalization, have different impacts on trends towards international publication of higher education research and on the collaborative networks nurtured and developed in each East Asian country. The main finding is that these countries present different realities in terms of engagement in internationally focused higher education literature among their national research communities. Yet, each country has made a wide-ranging contribution to international higher education research literature over time; each has a potentially decisive role in the further integration and development of higher education research in Asia over the coming years; and also, possibly , in the development of a regional higher education system.
