River History

This study of river names seeks to deepen our understanding of the pre-modern environmental history of northern Vietnam. A performative practice, naming places often reveals the transformation of a physical environment into a cultural one. By analysing the names given to antecedents of the Red River in northern Vietnam, this article argues that each historical name reflected its users’ perception of their relationship with a respective river. Toponyms like Lô, Phú Lương, Nhị, and ‘Great River’, therefore, did not simply represent the present-day Red River — a geographical unit that dates to the French colonial period.

Dyarubbin, the Hawkesbury–Nepean River, is where the two early Australias—ancient and modern—first collided. People of the River journeys into the lost worlds of the Aboriginal people and the settlers of Dyarubbin, both complex worlds with ancient roots.

The settlers who took land on the river from the mid-1790s were there because of an extraordinary experiment devised half a world away. Modern Australia was not founded as a gaol, as we usually suppose, but as a colony. Britain’s felons, transported to the other side of the world, were meant to become settlers in the new colony. They made history on the river: it was the first successful white farming frontier, it nurtured the earliest expressions of patriotism, and it became the last bastion of eighteenth-century ways of life.

The Aboriginal people of the river had occupied Dyarubbin for at least 50,000 years, a people whose history, culture and spirituality were inseparable from their river Country. Colonisation kicked off a slow and cumulative process of violence, theft of Aboriginal children and ongoing annexation of the river lands. Yet despite that sorry history, Dyarubbin’s Aboriginal people managed to remain on their Country, and they still live on the river today. 

The Hawkesbury–Nepean was the seedbed for settler expansion and invasion of Aboriginal lands to the north, south and west. It was the crucible of the colony, and the nation that followed.

This article discusses the geology, archaeology, religious history, history of art and architecture, mythology associated with river Narmada, considered holier and older than all rivers. It has mentioned sacred sites and pilgrimage spots, associated with the visits of great Indian saints from Vedic days, and described forts, fortifications, temples and landscapes, created by rulers and communities from the earliest times. It evokes the devotion inspired by the river in paeans of praise offered by renowned sages of India. It locates the issue of development of the Narmada river bank and adjacent land, held by communities for many generations, in the backdrop of the organic life of the river, considered a living, breathing Goddess.

Die Verflechtung zwischen Stadt und Fluss war in der Vergangenheit und ist bis heute derart intensiv, dass es reizvoll ist, die Geschichte einer Stadt entlang dieser Beziehung zu schreiben. Sie stellte sich stets als ein komplexes Bündel zahlreicher Faktoren dar, deren Bewertung durch den Menschen sich im Lauf der Geschichte änderte. 1 Dabei war dieses Verhältnis keineswegs immer so positiv, wie es die enge Verbindung der europäischen Stadt mit dem Fluss nahelegen mag. Nutzen und Schaden lagen sehr eng beieinander, obwohl die Lage am Fluss schon für die Städte des Mittelalters von herausragender Bedeutung war. Die Gefahren ergaben sich aus dem Hochwasser und der natürlichen Flussdynamik, die immer wieder zu Flusslaufverlagerungen führte. Wirklich gefährlich wurde-und wird-es allerdings erst dann, wenn sich der Mensch dem Fluss zu sehr näherte. Dies musste er aber tun, um die zahlreichen Vorteile der Lage am Fluss ausnutzen zu können. Erst langsam lernte der Mensch, die Gefahr einzudämmen, was aber bis heute mit hohem Aufwand und Kosten verbunden ist. Selten war die Bedrohung jedoch stark genug, um die Standortvorteile aufzuheben, die der Fluss dem Menschen bot. Manchmal allerdings mussten Siedlungsstandorte dem Fluss weichen; auch für Bamberg ist von mindestens einem solchen Fall zu berichten. Das Verhältnis zwischen Mensch und Fluss in der Stadt ist gekennzeichnet durch den jahrhundertelangen Versuch der Zähmung des Flusses bei gleichzeitiger optimaler Nutzung seiner Ressourcen, deren Wertigkeit sich im Laufe der Jahrhunderte jedoch wandelte. Die wesentlichen Ressourcen des Flusses für die Stadt sind, in eine ungefähre Reihenfolge ihres zeitlichen Bedeutungsschwerpunktes gebracht: Schutz-und Verkehrsfunktion, Lebensgrundlage, sowohl als Nahrungsträger wie auch als Energieträger. Diese Faktoren sind für die Stadt von der Gründungsphase bis ins späte Mittelalter entscheidend, bleiben aber auch noch weit über diese Zeit hinaus wirksam. Zunächst bündelte der Fluss viele Funktionen, bevor er sie schrittweise an "Bypässe"-Schienen, Straßen, Kanalisationenabgab. Flüsse sind trennende und gleichzeitig verbindende Elemente in der Landschaft. Sie markierten häufig territoriale wie auch kirchliche Grenzen. Dort, wo die trennende Wirkung frühzeitig überwunden werden konnte, etwa durch Furten oder Brücken, ergaben sich neue Standortvorteile.

Rivers in North Africa were of limited help to ancient agriculture; they are abundant at times when the rains are sufficient for most crops, and often insufficient when irrigation is most needed.  They were used for irrigation and were dammed to store or divert water; but obviously only in the regions where they existed, especially the Tunisian Tell and the area between Constantine and Hippo Regius. They were of relatively slight importance as inland waterways; only those on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, and the lower stretches of the Moulouya and Chélif, and seasonally, the Medjerda, could have played a role as navigable transport corridors. Several ports were located at river mouths, but these were particularly vulnerable to siltation. For the most part, North African agriculture relied on the harnessing of sparse rainfall, concentrated in occasional flash floods in seasonal watercourses or wadis. For the purposes of the present study, the North African rivers are of interest particularly for the threats they posed via erosion, flooding, and harbour siltation, as the two examples of Utica and Lepcis show in different ways.

Pada masa Hindu-Budha hingga VOC peran sungai sangat penting, karena sungai merupakan jalan raya utama yang mudah ditemui dan dibutuhkan oleh masyarakat Cirebon sebagai alat transportasi untuk menghubungkan kawasan pantai (pelabuhan) dengan interior (pedalaman). Namun, pada masa Hindia Belanda keberadaan sungai di Kota Cirebon telah berubah. Perubahan keberadaan sungai adalah hal yang mendasar. Pertama, seiring dengan perkembangan zaman dan teknologi serta meningkatnya kebutuhan barang dan jasa terus berlanjut untuk kebutuhan eksploitasi daerah jajahan, serta untuk mengefisienkan pendistribusian barang dan jasa. Kemudian, pemerintah Hindia-Belanda melakukan peralihan dari moda transportasi sungai ke berbagai moda pembangunan transportasi darat, seperti jalan raya dan kereta api. Kedua, kondisi ekologi sungai yang tidak sehat turut memengaruhi, sehingga banyak orang yang sering terkena imbasnya oleh wabah penyakit akibat kondisi sungai yang tidak sehat dan ketika musim hujan tiba, sungai meluap dan menggenangi rumah penduduk. Faktor-faktor tersebut yang melatarbelakangi pemerintah Hindia-Belanda melakukan perubahan terhadap keberadaan sungai-sungai di Kota Cirebon, seperti pengerukan Sungai Lama "Kali Bacin", normalisasi Sungai Sukalila, normalisasi Sungai Sipadu dan pembuatan drainase.
