Robert Gober

Robert Gober's retrospective unobtrusively yet persistently animates every aspect of rooms. Walls, of course, but also floor, ceiling, window, doorway and corner are consistently engaged. Along the way Gober tests the potential of installation art-often thought of as site specific-to be re-staged or recreated. He explores the thematic of installation, along with the more familiar subjects of Catholicism, gay identity, and the fragmented body, forthrightly overviewed by American writer and theater critic Hilton Als in his catalog essay.1 Six of the fifteen (or sixteen) galleries of the survey are full room installations. Five of these are fully covered with imprints of the artist's own designed wallpaper, often developed from small pencil sketches also on display. Around halfway through is a startling break: a display of Gober's curatorship with works by five other artists whom he invited to a group show in 1999. Thus Gober participates in the recent interest in recreated historical exhibitions. These usually focus on the curator as auteur, yet here it is the artist as curator which is represented as a " work. " Reviewers have seen this as a generous gesture to other artists (which it is) but it is also signals exhibition as art material. The current retrospective itself can be viewed as an example, which lends this survey a rare sense of purpose. The first room refutes standard chronology, as does much of the rest of the exhibition, with works mixing decades, as well as media. The gallery cube is punctured with an inset lifesize wooden closet, containing only a storage shelf. Can a section of architecture be a readymade? Presenting an immediate suggestion of museum space as domestic interior, the word closet itself is also heavily loaded vis a vis gay identity at the time (1989), amidst the AIDS crisis.

En la posmodernidad el recorrido artístico por el cuerpo tiene todavía bastante de antropomórfico, de orgánico, de referencial, de natural, en línea directa  con las prácticas de body art  de los años setenta, pero sobretodo es un cuerpo que ahonda en el doble y casi siempre contradictorio terreno del simulacro, de lo  artificial, de lo posorgánico, de lo tecnológico, por un lado,  y de lo abyecto y traumático, por otro. Un cuerpo que a causa de la proliferación de las teorías de la subjetividad (de Goethe a Nietzsche, de Freud a Lacan y en especial de Deleuze y Guattari) o de lo que conoce como “multiculturalismo en los modos de construir la subjetividad”,  se convierte en epicentro de numerosas actividades artísticas algunas relacionadas con el deseo, otras con la ideología, la identidad sexual, el género, la escritura, la tecnología. Un cuerpo como tema y significante, como envoltura de la conciencia, como desarrollo de la identidad, como testigo, en suma, de los límites entre el “yo” y el “mundo”.
En este sentido el cuerpo se puede entender como un site , un lugar nada neutral, ni pasivo, sino más bien obsesivo en el que  convergen y se proyectan a la vez discursos críticos y prácticas artísticas que nos llevan a hablar, por un lado, de la experiencia individual del cuerpo (la esfera de la experiencia individual) , pero también  de un cuerpo social, de un cuerpo rasgado y exhibido como un espectáculo, en suma de un cuerpo político abierto a la esfera pública de la experiencia. El cuerpo humano como un campo metodológico cuya experimentación debe ser considerada como la verdadera estética del arte del fin de siglo.
Ya en 1993 Rosalind Krauss en su estudio monográfico sobre Cindy Sherman indicó el camino a seguir: de la mano de Sherman y de sus períodos creativos adentrarnos en una gran diversidad de teorías, desde el  psicoanálisis de Lacan , el feminismo de Mulvey,  la abyección de Kristeva, el simulacro de Baudrillard o la “muerte del autor” de Barthes, teorías que hablan del paso del universo de los simulacros (una nueva forma de ilusionismo que cubre lo real con superficies de simulacro) del posmodernismo posestructuralista al retorno de lo real y lo traumático basado en un ataque a la verticalidad sublimada de las imágenes de arte tradicionales.

Robert Gober rose to prominence in the mid-1980s and was quickly acknowledged as one of the most significant artists of his generation. In the years since, his reputation has continued to grow, commensurate with the rich and complex body of work he has produced. Published in conjunction with the first comprehensive large-scale survey of the artists career to take place in the United States, this publication presents his works in all mediums, including individual sculptures and immersive sculptural environments, as well as a distinctive selection of drawings, prints, and photographs. Prepared in close collaboration with the artist, it traces the development of a remarkable body of work, highlighting themes and motifs that emerged in the early 1980s and continue to inform the artists work today. Critics often refer to Dada and Surrealism when analyzing
Gober's sculptures and installations. My analysis departs
from these studies, first of all by exploring the radical theological
implications of Robert Gober's Virgin, and secondly by arguing
that his reconfiguration of the Virgin evokes Surrealism
most forcefully not as a style, an iconographic motif, or an
avenue to the unconscious but as a mode of anal attack.^
Failing to grasp this critical orientation may well explain
why many critics are mystified by Gober's adoption of the
Virgin motif, apparently fearing that the project marks the
artist's uncritical return to a pious investment in
Catholicism.

At a time when the gay community -to which Gober belongs- was losing more and more people to AIDS, Johns, Cage and Warhol almost certainly registered in special ways with Gober as both outstanding and prominent gay American artists who, like him, had come to New York City, where one could -more or less- be oneself, and test out one’s ideas before an audience open to experimentation -more so perhaps than almost anywhere else in these united states...

Robert Gober: Aspiration et effet de réel au sein de l'avant-garde.
L'artiste américain Robert Gober et son travail sculptural profitent d'une véritable notoriété depuis bien d'années déjà. Influencé par le surréalisme, la pop art, le seul et unique Marcel Duchamp ainsi que par la sculpture hyperréaliste, Gober va créer, à partir des années 70, des oeuvres portant ente autres sur le foyer, le genre, le trauma et la purification. Ces thématiques ainsi que son style visuel distinct feront que ces oeuvres seront plus tard regroupées et connues sous le nom d'art abject. Dans son travail mêlant sculpture et peinture on peut trouver réunis des objets du quotidien tels que des aliments, des meubles de toutes sortes-avec une attention particulière pour les éviers-, des symboles spirituels comme des croix ou des bougies, ainsi que des parties du corps-habituellement des jambes – qui, séparés du reste du corps, font songer à une indicible humiliation. Les oeuvres de Gober qui sont réalistes et avec un soin extrême pour le détail sont souvent présentés dans une mise en scène élaborée combinant différentes thématiques et souvent animées par l'eau, élément récurrent de son travail. L'univers de R.G, très riche en symboles et références, marqué par le deuil d'une génération dévastée par le sida, et pourtant plein d'humour et de tendresse échappe habillement aux classifications faciles. La question qui va nous occuper concernant le travail de Gober est son rapport au réalisme. En tant qu'artiste engagé dans les luttes et les questions de son époque dont il a fait même le sujet principal de son art, il semble de prime abord aligné avec le réel au moins dans le sens thématique. Dans la même perspective, Gober, sculpteur habille travaillant énormément avec des moulages a vite maitrisé les techniques hyperréalistes de ces contemporains, une raison de plus pour voir son travail comme réaliste. Pourtant est-ce que l'aspect réaliste incontestable des oeuvres de Robert Gober vise à nous mener vers le réel ou loin de celui-ci ? La question du réalisme dans l'art a été abordée par plusieurs théoriciens et philosophes à travers les siècles. Dans le contexte de cette analyse nous allons nous concentrer sur trois interprétations/aspects du terme. La première vient du linguiste Roman Jakobson qui dans son article « Du réalisme artistique » publié en 1921 reconnaît une ambiguïté à la racine même du terme, cette ambiguïté est la question du point de vue. Jakobson trace alors deux significations quand au réalisme : celle de la part de l'artiste pour qui le réalisme peut être une aspiration ou tendance et celle ensuite de l'historien qui jugera l'oeuvre par rapport à sa vraisemblance au réel. En premier lieu nous allons retenir, pour les objectifs de la présente, une formule sur laquelle je reviendrai plus tard, il s'agit de : l'aspiration de l'artiste. Plus loin dans ce même texte Jakobson constate que cette tendance vers le réalisme est partagée par quasiment tous les artistes qui souhaitent voir leurs oeuvres comme vraisemblables et fidèles à la réalité offrant « l'illusion d'une fidélité objective » 1. Cette remarque sera après Jakobson affirmée et raffinée par plusieurs théoriciens qui souligneront la nécessité de chaque mouvement artistique novateur, comme un passage obligé, à affirmer que sa vision du réel est plus réaliste que celle d'avant. Comme le dit Jean-François Lyotard « La modernité, de quelque époque qu'elle date, ne va jamais sans l'ébranlement de la croyance et sans la découverte du peu de réalité de la réalité, associée à l'invention d'autres réalités ». Par la modernité de chaque époque on entend ce qu'on appelle avant-garde, ce qui est novateur, qui devance, qui rompt avec la tradition et qui entend donner une impulsion au développement des idées et des techniques. Selon Lyotard on peut alors voir le réalisme lié avec l'avant-garde dans la mesure ou cette dernière vise à rendre visibles d'autres aspects du réel et reconstruire ce dernier. On retient alors la notion suivante: réel de l'avant-garde.

Le manifestazioni dell'arte postumana vengono lette attraverso i radicali cambiamenti sociali dei primi anni '90: l'avanzare della cosiddetta "società della performance",  l'affacciarsi di disturbi come l'Information Fatigue Syndrome e la depressione, il conseguente e generalizzato ricorso agli antidepressivi cambiano radicalmente la struttura del soggetto contemporaneo. Il contributo analizza l'opera di artisti come Cindy Sherman, Robert Gober e Paul Mcarthy in relazione a questo radicale mutamento.
