Russian sinology

The paper aims to analyze different types of illustrations of court case gong`an 公案 stories featuring Qing dynasty judges Shi-gong 施公 and Peng-gong 鵬公 found in the late Qing woodblock editions and popular woodblock prints nianhua 年畫 in order to figure out how tales about imperial ‘fair officials’ have been reflected in book illustrations and in popular prints nianhua 年畫. Popular prints from various Russian and foreign collections mostly depict epi-sodes featuring Qing dynasty judges Shi Shilun (施世綸, dec. 1722), originally a protagonist of the novel “Criminal Cases of Judge Shi” (施公案 Shigong an, preface dated 1798), and Peng Peng (彭鹏, 1637–1704) from the novel “Criminal Cases of Judge Peng” (彭公案 Penggongan, 1871) by Tanmeng Daoren 貪夢道人. “Shi-gong plays” about Judge Shi and his friends gained popularity during the Daoguang period (1821–1850), however Judge Shi was no longer their central protagonist. The popular prints mostly depict martial scenes from these plays based on the court case stories. This research claims to define sources of various types of illustrations and clarify connections between book illustrations, popular prints and drama.

Вторая часть статьи об истории российско-советского китаеведения основана на материалах профессиональных интервью с известными китаеведами старшего поколения, отдавшими, начиная с 1950-х гг., десятки лет работе в московских и ленинградских стенах Института востоковедения. Все многочасовые интервью записаны в 2008–2017 гг. в рамках международного проекта «Российское китаеведение – устная история». Взятые в совокупности, дополненные и верифицированные с помощью ссылок и комментариев, тексты интервью образуют уникальную «китайскую» главу, достойную особого места в неофициальной истории института.

Статья основана на материалах профессиональных интервью с известными китаеведами старшего поколения, отдавшими, начиная с 1950-х гг., десятки лет работе в московских и ленинградских стенах Института востоковедения. Все многочасовые интервью записаны в 2008–2017 гг. в рамках международного проекта «Российское китаеведение – устная история». Взятые в совокупности, к тому же дополненные и верифицированные с помощью ссылок и комментариев, тексты интервью образуют уникальную «китайскую» главу, достойную особого места в неофициальной истории института.

This article presents personal accounts by Russian sinologists about their professional work abroad and exchanges with foreign colleagues during the Soviet period (1917‒1991). Divided, isolated, oppressed, discriminated, limited, and confined to their country for many decades, Russian sinologists still managed to maintain contacts with their colleagues in China, the “socialist camp,” and the global sinology community. Sinologists in the USSR had to implement various methods to penetrate the political and ideological “Iron Veil,” to promote their studies abroad, and to participate in international cooperation on China studies. This study utilizes data obtained from nearly 40 interviews conducted in Russia as part of “The Epistemology of China Studies: Oral History Project” from 2009 to 2014. Its purpose is to demonstrate the uniqueness of professional interviews as a potentially rich source and foundation for further academic explorations of oral history on China studies.

A serious study of the Chinese language in Russia began in the 18th
century, and at present Russia is experiencing a real boom in the Chinese
language, which is now the second most popular language after English
in the universities, and even in mid schools learning Chinese is
becoming ever more popular.
  In the 20th century, serious studies of the Chinese language were
conducted in the Soviet Union, a considerable number of monographs
and textbooks were created, and / but, written in Russian, until now they
are mostly  unknown in other countries. 
The most significant Sinology linguists of the Soviet period were V.
Solntsev, A. Dragunov, N. Korotkov and several others. The problems,
in general, concerned general theoretical problems of syntax and
morphology. In the 1970s and 1980s, Sinology Linguistics, like
linguistics in general, experienced a period of intensified activity: there
appeared studies on the actual problems of syntax, the linguistics of text
and typology etc. 
The article is aimed to a critical review of the main works of Soviet
period, the description of schools and trends, analysis  from the point of
modern ideas about linguistics.
