""Objectives: Loneliness is an important influence on quality of life in old age and has been conceptualised as consisting of two dimensions, social and emotional. This article describes analyses that sought to produce models of social and emotional loneliness in older people, using demographic, psychological and health, and social variables.
Method: Older people (aged 65þ, n ¼ 1255) from the Barnsley metropolitan area of the United Kingdom were recruited
randomly from within a stratified sampling frame and received a questionnaire-based interview (response rate: 68.1%). The questionnaire contained items and scales on demographic, psychological and health, and social characteristics, and a
validated measure of loneliness that assesses both social and emotional loneliness.
Results: Of the respondents, 7.7% were found to be severely or very severely lonely, while another 38.3% were moderately lonely. Social and emotional loneliness shared 19.36% variance. Being male, being widowed, low well-being, low selfesteem, low-income comfort, low contact with family, low contact with friends, low activity, low perceived community integration, and receipt of community care were significant predictors of social loneliness (R ¼ 0.50, R2 ¼ 0.25, F(18, 979) ¼ 18.17, p < 0.001). Being widowed, low well-being, low self-esteem, high activity restriction, low-income comfort, and non-receipt of informal care were significant predictors of  emotional loneliness (R ¼ 0.55, R2 ¼ 0.30, F (18, 973) ¼ 23.00, p < 0.001).
Conclusion: This study provides further empirical support for the conceptual separation of emotional and social loneliness.
Consequently, policy on loneliness in older people should be directed to developing a range of divergent intervention strategies if both emotional and social loneliness are to be reduced.""

This Study aims to explore the interactions between loneliness, media and migration and the relationship between the feelings of loneliness and media use. Statistics proof that migrants are more likely to be in a situation where they are confronted with loneliness/faced with loneliness. The categories were built using guidelines and research questions and analyzed with MAXQDA, a qualitative data analysis software.

On basis of the structural content analysis by Mayring followed by typification by
Kelle and Klug the empirical material was evaluated. Key findings of this paper are that no correlation between the different types of loneliness and their media use could be drawn, and that media from the origin country have no great significance in reducing feelings of loneliness. The results also suggest that migrants tend to feel lonely in situations were they feel they are perceived negatively because of the language barrier, and that positive/negative media coverage on migrants has no influence on their sense of belonging to the country of migration as defined by the self-concept.

The validity of the results is, however, to doubt.


Vorliegende Arbeit beleuchtet die Zusammenspiele zwischen Einsamkeit, Medien und Migration und sucht besondere Zusammenhänge zwischen Einsamkeitsempfindungen und Mediennutzung. Es ist statistisch bewiesen, dass MigrantInnen öfter mit Situationen, die das Gefühl der Einsamkeit verstärken können, konfrontiert sind. Die Interviews wurden mit Kategorien aus dem Leitfaden und den Forschungsfragen, die dieser Arbeit zu Grunde liegen, gebildet und mit der Daten und Textanalysesoftware MAXQDA aufbereitet. Anhand der strukturellen Inhaltsanalyse nach Mayring mit anschließender Typenbildung nach Kelle und Klug wurde das empirische Material ausgewertet.

Wesentliche Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit sind, dass kein Zusammenhang zwischen den verschiedenen Einsamkeitstypen und deren Mediennutzung gezogen werden konnte und, dass Herkunftsmedien keinen großen Stellenwert zum Abbau von Einsamkeitsgefühlen haben. Die Ergebnisse deuten außerdem darauf hin, dass MigrantInnen sich vor allem in Situationen, in denen sie sich aufgrund der Sprachbarriere negativ wahrgenommen fühlen, einsam fühlen und, dass positive/negative Berichterstattung über MigrantInnen keinen Einfluss auf deren Zugehörigkeitsgefühl zum Migrationsland im Sinne des Selbstkonzeptes hat.

Die Validität der Ergebnisse ist allerdings anzuzweifeln.

Objectives: The understanding of social phenomena is enhanced if individuals can be studied over longer periods. Regarding loneliness in old age, there is a general lack of longitudinal research. The aim of this study was to examine whether there is an association between loneliness in old age and social engagement 20 years earlier, as stated by life course theory and the convoy model.
Method: Data from the nationally representative Swedish Panel Study of Living Conditions of the Oldest Old (2002 and 2011 data collection waves) and the Swedish Level of Living Survey (1981 and 1991 data collection waves) were used. The sample included 823 individuals with an average age of 62.2 years at baseline and 82.4 years at follow-up.
Results: Each form of social engagement in old age was significantly associated with the same form of social engagement 20 years earlier. Close forms of social engagement were associated with loneliness in old age; as were more distant forms of social engagement, but only when they were considered solely in old age.
Conclusion: Patterns of social engagement in old age were established at least 20 years earlier and close forms of social engagement are long-term predictors of loneliness, although current social engagement tended to be more influential on loneliness. The study underlines the importance of interventions targeted at close relationships that can provide social support in old age.

This paper argues that public holidays facilitate the co-ordination of leisure time but do not constrain the annual amount of leisure. Public holidays therefore have benefits both in the utility of leisure on holidays and (by enabling people to maintain social contacts more easily) in increasing the utility of leisure on normal weekdays and weekends. The paper uses the variation (13 to 17) in public holidays across German Länder and the German Time Use Survey of 2001-02 to show that public holidays have beneficial impacts on social life on normal weekdays and weekends. Since these benefits are additional to the other benefits of holidays, it suggests that there is a case to be made for more public holidays.

Kutatásunk célja annak megmutatása, hogy a volt munkakapcsolatok figyelemre méltó hatást gyakorolnak a munkahelyváltó egyének kezdőbérére, a későbbi bérek pályájára, illetve az állásvesztés valószínűségére. Az elemzés adminisztratív állam-igazgatási adatbázison alapul, mely a 2003–2011 közötti időszakra vonatkozóan tartalmazza a magyarországi népesség felének munkaerőpiaci adatait. Eredményeink alapján azok, akik olyan céghez nyernek felvételt, ahol dolgozik volt munkatársuk, átlagosan 2,5 százalékkal nagyobb kezdőbérre számíthatnak azokhoz viszonyítva, akiknek nincs hasonló ismerősük. Ez azonban közvetett hatás, amely valójában a jobb látens képességűek magasabb bérszintű cégekbe szelektálódásán keresztül érvényesül. A bérelőny körülbelül három évig őrződik meg, utána eltűnik; eddig mutatható ki a munkaviszony stabilitására gyakorolt pozitív hatás is. A volt munkatársak kezdőbérre gyakorolt hatása erősebb, ha az ajánló és a jelentkező foglalkozási kategóriája egymáshoz közeli, és az ajánló magasabb pozícióban van.

Das World Internet Project ist ein internationales, kollaboratives Wissenschafts-Projekt, das seit 1999 die Verbreitung und Nutzung des Internet im internationalen Vergleich erfasst. Die Schweiz hat 2011 mit dem World Internet Project – Switzerland (WIP-CH) erstmals am WIP teilgenommen und die Schweizer Bevölkerung zu ihrer Internet-Nutzung und ihren Einstellungen zum Internet befragt.
Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung werden als Themenberichte veröffentlicht. Diese widmen sich der Internet-Verbreitung und digitalen Bruchlinien in der Schweiz, den Mustern der Nutzung von Internet-Anwendungen und dem Thema Internet und Politik. Der hier vorliegende Bericht liefert Ergebnisse zum Vertrauen in das Internet sowie zu den Erfahrungen und Sorgen bei der Internet-Nutzung.
