Dalit and suppressed people a modern term for untouchables in India, are underprivileged people in all social, economic, cultural and political fronts of our society which led to their misery, discrimination, exploitation and oppression by the caste dominated social stratification of India. The Constitution of India classifies Dalits as Scheduled Castes (SCs). They are the people who cultivate the land, mend the shoes, wash the clothes, clean the toilets, scavenge the dead animals or unknown human bodies and do all types of menial works, but share the stigmas of untouchability and are frequently denied the chance to eat, smoke and even seat with the members of upper castes. They often use separate wells and tube wells from those maintained for others. Casework is regarded as the pivot of1 social work practice on which all other activities revolves. Casework is a conglomerate o f organizing and coordinating services where individuals and families may be as clients. All social work processes such as
interviewing, assessment, planning, interventions and evaluations take place in the context of meeting people, their worries and concerns. Casework starts the process of building a worker-client relationship on which premise help can start to reach the client. Social work practice requires casework skills to prosecute the services. This paper concluded that the basic casework skills needed for effective practice are skills in listening, observing and responding. Social workers must be in constant touch with
journals on social work as well as sourcing for relevant materials from the internet to remain relevant with evidence-based practice.

Parenting Plans have become the default legal document for divorces in Western jurisdictions. A Google search for templates showed 5 vulnerabilities in high-conflict settings that would tend in practice to hamper mediation and promote parental alienation. Our mediation centre/child protection agency has developed an alternative that (1) focuses the parents on the children's developmental needs (2) addresses the separation-based emotions that hamper agreement (3) promotes shared-parenting (4) replaces the rights-based approach with a care-based approach and (5) alerts parents to the consequences of obstruction. Based on UK templates and designed around s18 - s35 of the Children's Act, 38 of 2005 for use in South Africa, it is a generic document for mediators to prepare parents emotionally and practically before finalising parenting plans.

The purpose of this paper is to enumerate the social work intervention for elderly which enable them to adapt to changes arising from old age. The crucial problems of a sense of powerlessness, helplessness, low self-esteem and low self-efficacy possessed by elderly people can be addressed by social work approaches. In response to the social and political changes in contemporary society, it is necessary to change old people from passive clients into active and empowered individuals with a positive self-image. Social work inventions are effective in strengthening elderly people's contact with the community, eliminating elderly people's negative self-image, protecting elderly rights, and increasing their capacity to contribute towards society in terms of their life experiences and knowledge. Finding of the study can serve as input to enhance the quality of life of elderly.

This article will discuss how two theoretical frameworks can be useful in the analysis of conflict situations in social work practice. By viewing situations from the perspective of competing and differing values, social workers are able to come to respect the positions of those with whom they are in conflict. The respect that emanates from being empathic and validating towards another's values is crucial for negotiating resolution to difficult conflict situations.

Social development has been adopted as South Africa’s social welfare approach and is increasingly being adopted in Africa and other parts of the developing world. The translation of developmental social welfare to social work has, however, been difficult for many social workers. A particularly challenging aspect of this translation concerns the practice of social case work within a social development approach, a topic that has received virtually no attention in the social development literature. This paper constructs a process model for a form of social case work that is informed by social development principles and priorities.

This study was conducted from the period of October to December 2013with a selected population of elderly women who belongs to urban and rural areas of Karachi. The aim of the study was to investigate the Socio-economic conditions, health status, psychological condition, living style and also social support mechanisms among the elderly women in both rural and urban areas. Stratified random sampling method was used to collect the data. A sample of 300 female senior citizens was selected from two different communities of two union councils namely, “Jut Lines” and the “Central Jacob Line” of Jamshed Town from urban area and two from Malir town to represent the rural population of Karachi, Pakistan. The respondents were interviewed through a formulated questionnaire that was cross-translated into Urdu language to determine the participant’s socio-economic problems. The study respondents belong to different walks of life and they participated voluntarily in this study. Similar studies are needed to be conducted in other community settings for recommending appropriate changes in public behavior towards elder women problems’ in our society.

The paper reviews the traditional understanding of specifics and characteristics of the casework method and some critical issues of the contemporary social work practice. Thus the social casework is commented in the context of interactions on micro-and macro level, case management practice, the subculture of poverty, the importance of the resources, the necessity of developing the personality and behavior, the importance of the relations in the helping process.

Study objective: Senior (geriatric) emergency departments (EDs) are an emerging phenomenon across the United States, designed to provide greater comfort for elders, screening for common morbidities, and selective contact with social workers. We hypothesize that the senior ED will reduce recidivism, rate of admission, and hospital length of stay. Methods: This was a pre/postintervention observational study of seniors (!65 years) before and after opening of a new senior ED in a large community hospital. Older nonseniors treated during the same periods were included to detect temporal trend bias. Outcomes included admission to the hospital, hospital length of stay, and ED return visits. Cox proportional hazards models, controlling for patient age, sex, triage level, insurance type, admission on the index visit, and hospital length of stay, were used to test association with time to return within 30 and 180 days. Multivariable regression modeling was used to determine whether the intervention was associated with admission on the index visit, and hospital length of stay.

Child support is a subject that is rarely treated in anthropological literature. Other researchers in the social sciences have worked on topics such as child support enforcement issues and effectiveness of the system (Bartfeld and Meyer 1994; Ellis 2001; Huang, Han, and Garfinkel 2003), compliance with child support orders (Meyer and Bartfeld 1996; Bartfeld and Meyer 2003), ability to pay child support (Sorensen 1997), and the reasons behind case openings, yet child support case closure remains an underexplored topic. This ethnographic study fills part of this gap by examining the recent phenomenon of the declining child support caseload in Monterey County, California to ascertain the specific factors influencing a parent’s decision to close their child support case. To gain a holistic understanding of the closure process, case closures are explored from the perspectives of both the caseworkers and parents through interviews, observations, and questionnaires with a total of 53 participants from varied backgrounds. Overall, this study found that displeasure and frustration stemming from interactions with the child support agency, misunderstandings of the way in which the child support system functions, and dissatisfaction with the amount of money received through the agency are leading factors in a parent’s decision to close the case.

This paper aims to explore the additional roles professional social workers in Malaysia can play in humanizing and improving the judicial decision making process. It is essential that the courts be given the valuable as well as constructive input of professional social workers at various stages of court’s processes.

This study will provide an initial assessment of the areas and the extent to which professional social workers can help Malaysian courts to expedite case processing; accurately track cases; increase the amount of information available to the court; improve communication between the court and social service agency; and improve
communication with the families involved in the system.

This study was based on a mailed questionnaire survey of 372 adoptive families, over two-thirds of which had at least one teen-age adoptee. It was shown that most adoptive parents were receptive to opening adoption records, in contrast to earlier findings. Reform of current concealment practices is advocated.

Detta temanummer 'Socialt arbete inom hälso- och sjukvård – ett kunskapsfält i förändring' har initierats av Nationellt nätverk för forskning inom socialt arbete i hälso- och sjukvård, och redaktörer har varit nätverkets koordinator Veronica Svärd, lektor i socialt arbete med inriktning hälso- och sjukvård vid Södertörns högskola, samt professor Hans Swärd vid Lunds universitet. Mycket har hänt inom både forskningsfältet och för yrkesprofessionen sedan det förra temanumret gavs ut 2008, och efter mer än ett decennium finns det starka skäl att återvända till temat och undersöka hur kunskapsfältet har utvecklats. Som bidragen till detta temanummer visar på så har forskningen både breddats och fördjupats över tid. Artiklarna är inte bara nya intressanta enskilda forskningsbidrag till fältet. Tillsammans belyser de också att detta är ett kunskapsfält i förändring, och att detta sker i ett interdisciplinärt spänningsfält mellan samhällsvetenskap, psykologi och medicinsk vetenskap. Denna spännvidd innebär både möjligheter och utmaningar, både för hur forskningsfältet och kuratorernas yrkesroll ska förstås, avgränsas och beskrivas. Temanumret vill både belysa denna spännvidd, med dess möjligheter och utmaningar, och samtidigt bidra till en fördjupad diskussion kring de sociala perspektivens plats i kunskapsutvecklingen och i det bredare bio-psyko-sociala perspektiv som också är utgångspunkten för begreppet hälsa.

A comparative content analysis of major social work texts shows significant variations in the ways in which they treat the relationship between social workers and employing agencies. The implications are relevant to the tensions among workers, agencies, and educators.

Vol. 2, No.1, pp. 15-29, 2017. CONTEXT: Social isolation and comorbidities are likely to have a significant level of influence on the healthcare use patterns of geriatric patients with ongoing congestive heart failure (CHF)-related needs. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in a specialized emergency department (ED) with a sample of 286 geriatric CHF patients who initially received CHFrelated care over a six-month period. Social isolation levels were assessed using a pre-existing four-point screening tool used in the study setting and composite comorbidity was gauged using the Charlson Comorbidity Index method. Subjects were categorized into either “less than 30-day readmission” or “greater than 30-day readmission/non-readmitted” sample subgroups. The setting was a single 304- bed community hospital with approximately 45,000 annual ED visits. The analytic sample was comprised of geriatric patients 65+ years of age with an ICD-9 code corresponding to CHF. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences between earlier hospital readmission versus later/nonreadmitted sample patients when grouped by age, race, gender or level of measured social isolation. However, composite comorbidity scores were significantly lower for patients in the >30-day/nonreadmitted subgroup compared to earlier readmission patients. CONCLUSIONS: These initial study results suggest that a larger proportion of CHF hospital readmissions may be more heavily influenced by clinical factors than social living arrangements. Future studies with larger samples and validated measures of social isolation are needed to inform the development and testing of programs for geriatric CHF patients striving to avoid unnecessary hospital readmissions and adverse health outcomes comorbidity, geriatric . The importance of giving young people a say in casework has received much attention in recent years. Little attention, however, has been given to the question of how to educate youth workers as a way of ensuring young people's involvement in such professional practices. This paper reports on a model for preparing youth workers for participatory casework practice. It is a curriculum grounded in a collaborative-based pedagogy. Such educative frameworks that invite student's participation align with effective theories and models on youth participation. Educators interested in developing youth work students’ capacities to engage in direct practice that encourages young people's involvement in decision making need to ‘practise what they teach’ and teach in ways that encourage students’ active participation. The teaching and learning activities engage students with rationales of youth participation and what we know about young people being given a say in casework. The possible influence of personal experiences and broader social and economic arrangements are explored. And a scenario-based activity invites students to assess the implications of current knowledge, biography and context, to identify challenges and opportunities for practice.

Abstract A primary goal of social justice educators is to engage students in a process of self-discovery, with the goal of helping them recognize their own biases, develop empathy, and become better prepared for culturally responsive practice. While social work educators are mandated with the important task of training future social workers in culturally responsive practice with diverse populations, practical strategies on how to do so are scant.

The question of whether privileged communication really exists in the social worker-client relationship is in doubt. Even in the few states that have privileged communication laws, courts often rely on other considerations to find that the privilege will not, in fact, be applied in the legal matter pending.
