Sociogenesis

One recurring theme in philosophical work from and on the Americas has to do with the relationship between European Modernity and Colonialism. Jamaican theorist Sylvia Wynter’s penetrating analysis of this relationship offers a description of what she refers to as “European Man,” in which particular European (patriarchal, bourgeois, and white) accounts of “the human”, and especially of the human as rational, posit themselves as universal. What is significant about her critique of this view, is that she does not simply abandon notions of universality, or even humanism, but rather directs her work toward a call to theoretical action in the form of “the Human project,” in which the failures of the European Enlightenment project are avoided in favor of a more genuinely universal and liberatory account of the human. This chapter stands as an effort to take up the challenge posed by Wynter’s analysis, focusing in particular on the ways in which a particular understanding of reason informed European Man as an ideal, and suggesting what understanding of reason would be most appropriate to Wynter’s liberatory humanism.

This essay explores, in existential phenomenological terms, some of the elements of Sylvia Wynter's conception of black subjectivity as posed by her provocative essay, ‘Toward the Sociogenic Principle: Fanon, Identity, the Puzzle of Conscious Experience, and What It Is
Like to Be Black.’  The underlying challenges of consciousness and intersubjectivity posed by an antiblack world's presupposition of alien blackness presses extraordinary challenges to Thomas Nagel's essay on which the third term in the subtitle is based.  The Fanonian question of experience from a point of view that is not supposed to be a point of view makes these reflections all the more poignant where epistemic norms of dehumanization reign.  The author's theory of teleological suspensions of disciplinary decadence is offered as a positive intervention in this analysis.

This article explores the methodological value of post-structuralism for sociocultural theory. The Peircean notion of knowledge serves as a rationale for incorporating a post-structuralist perspective of discourse into Vygotsky-inspired sociocultural approach to conceptual development. Central to this incorporation is an analytic frame of reference devised to examine how knowledge construction is mediated through the use of language and other semiotic tools. The article provides an interpretive analysis of mother–child interaction in the reading of dual-language picture books, interwoven with a post-structuralist exposition of knowledge, power and discourse. It is suggestive of what sociocultural theory would need to consider in terms of power relations when theorising the role of semiotic mediation in transforming the human mind and activity.

Resumo: A análise de Frantz Fanon sobre o colonialismo abrange tanto o impacto do mundo social sobre a emergência dos sentidos e identidades humanas quanto às situações individuais e coletivas de ressignificação histórica do mundo. Entretanto, esta abordagem foi recebida de maneira não consensual pela literatura especializada pendendo para apreensões que ora enfatizam os seus aspectos macro-políticos e/ou econômicos ora os aspectos subjetivos/psíquicos e/ou culturais de sua reflexão. Em contraste crítico a esta polarização, este artigo retoma o conceito fanoniano de "sociogenia" e o identifica como base estruturante de sua proposta teórica. Não obstante, argu-menta que este enquadramento aponta para a determinação reflexiva entre capitalismo, colonialismo e racismo e, sobretudo, para a possibi-lidade histórica de uma práxis anticolonial emancipadora que abranja tanto os aspectos objetivos quanto os subjetivos da existência humana. Para embasar tal posição, vale-se de trechos diversos produzidos pelo autor ao longo de sua trajetória teórica.

This article examines the intersection of The Tempest adaptations and militarization across the Caribbean and Pacific. Through an analysis of the South Korean writer Ch’oe In-Hun’s 1973 novel The Typhoon, it argues that past speculative visions for a decolonial future continue to offer a critical imaginary of decolonization in the Pacific and of reunification of Korea. Building on the works of Sylvia Wynter, Frantz Fanon, and Édouard Glissant, the article theorizes relational sovereignty and spiritual sociogenesis in the context of militarization of islands. It considers the transpacific region alongside the Caribbean through a comparative analysis of The Typhoon and the Martinican thinker Aimé Césaire’s 1969 play Une Tempête. This is an archipelagic perspective that decenters the logic that justifies militarization of the islands for the securitization of the continents. The article analyzes how decolonial knowledge emerges through the affective, spiritual, and environmental transformations and alters the course of military mobilization of the colonized on islands both real and fictional.

Abstract: Very generally our difficulties in life are to do with the development of our relations to our surroundings. They are related to the problem of the relation — some would say contest — between objectivism and relativism, or that between realism and social constructionism. It is to do with the difficulty of finding some basis somewhere to which to appeal in warranting one's claims to be offering knowledge of at least some kind of worth to others. Knowledge is thought to be of worth to others if it is knowledge of circumstances or states of affairs 'outside' of oneself, rather than being merely knowledge of one's own, 'inner', personal desires or opinions. In the past, attempts to solve this ‘problem’ have treated it both as a singular problem, and as a philosophical problem, as involving that branch of philosophy known as epistemology. However, in line with certain remarks of Wittgenstein — that there are countless ways in which we might relate our thought to speech, and our speech to the world, and countless ways in which what Vygotsky calls "the interfunctional relations" between "higher psychological functions" might be formulated — I want to argue that, rather than functioning mechanically and systematically, our mental processes reflect in their functioning essentially the same ethical and political considerations influencing transactions between people, out in the world. Our feeling in the past, that the problem should be treated merely an epistemological problem, represented, as Rorty (1979, p.61) puts it, the "triumph of the quest for certainty over the quest for reason."

Michel Foucault no es conocido por ser un teórico del Estado, sino un pensador del poder allí donde este se ejerce (en la escuela, la prisión, el cuartel, la fábrica, el hospital). Pese a ello, es fácil constatar en sus trabajos la existencia de una gran genealogía del Estado moderno. Esta obra se propone disipar esta paradoja demostrando dos cosas.
Por un lado, la existencia de una teoría foucaultiana del Estado; no es una teoría sistemática ni acabada, pero sí se puede reconstruir a partir de la fabulosa riqueza de los textos de Foucault y de su diálogo con otras grandes empresas vecinas, procedentes de la filosofía y de las ciencias sociales: el marxismo, Weber, Elias y Bourdieu, entre otros.
Y por otro, la compatibilidad de la genealogía y la sociología. Los conceptos de biopolítica, disciplina, pastoral, gubernamentalidad, no son sino herramientas para comprender la estatalización de las relaciones de poder, es decir, los procesos de monopolización política que, desde la Edad Media hasta hoy, están en la base de nuestros presuntos Leviatanes europeos. ¿El Estado? No es ya el más frío de todos los monstruos fríos, ni un organismo expansivo que vendría a parasitar una sociedad civil inocente; más bien se trata del efecto y el operador de gubernamentalidades múltiples, de racionalidades heterogéneas, de dispositivos variados.
Este no es un nuevo libro sobre Foucault. Es un libro sobre el Estado y la posibilidad siempre viva de hacer una teoría sobre él, empapada en la lluvia ácida de la genealogía.

Comentário sobre as ideias e eventos sócio-históricos que contribuíram, em meados do século XIX para constituição da sociologia, assim como sobre a mudança destes ao longo do tempo. Este trabalho foi feito para disciplicina "Introdução a Sociologia" e trata-se de um desenvolvimento em relação à citação a seguir: “Se a sociologia se afirma tão tardiamente na história das ciências sociais, as considerações sobre a maneira de “viver em sociedade” logo acompanharam os esforços de reflexão dos filósofos e de outros pensadores políticos. Deste modo, para compreender a originalidade das ideias que se pode qualificar, a partir do século XIX como ‘sociológicas’ (tendo em conta que enunciam novos pontos de vista sobre os seres humanos ao viver em sociedade e porque enunciados por indivíduos que vão se reconhecer como sociólogos), é necessário inscrever a sua gênese em um movimento de longo prazo.”

el presente artículo aborda la polémica y problemática relación entre dos de los gran-des edificios teóricos de la modernidad, como lo son el marxismo y el psicoanálisis, los cuales, han sido objeto de numerosos esfuerzos integrativos históricamente hablando. No se trata aquí de pasar revista a tales esfuerzos, si no más bien de comprender con-ceptualmente sus supuestos de partida y de establecer, en arreglo a estos, la viabilidad de una nueva formulación metateórica.

In this paper we centrally explore the ‘sociogenesis’ of the concept of happiness: the social processes by which it came to be a term appropriated by different practitioner communities - from policy makers to academics, from a burgeoning self-help industry to advocates of positive psychology. Our core focus is upon shifting historical understandings of the term and how these relate to more general social processes. Our aim in this paper is not to present a definitive history of happiness, but rather something of the overall direction of changes in dominant approaches to, and understandings of, happiness particularly within what we might broadly term ‘the human sciences’. Ultimately, we offer a series of tentative reflections upon the implications of a developmental approach to happiness for sociological analyses of this increasingly popular area of concern.
