Sociology of Death and Dying

Background: Stigma and social exclusion complicate the lives of individuals close to those who have committed suicide, adversely impacting their physical and mental health. The extent of this issue has been documented in various studies. This research uniquely examines how individuals who have committed suicide are marginalized in grave construction and burial practices, as well as the social interactions during the mourning process. Objective: To understand how stigma and social exclusion experienced by the relatives of individuals who have committed suicide manifest in mourning and burial rituals. Method: In-depth interviews were conducted with fifteen relatives of individuals who had committed suicide, and the data were analyzed using content analysis. The study's limitations include a predominantly female sample and an insufficient sample size. Results: All participants agreed that suicide is a source of stigma and social exclusion. Individuals who have committed suicide are those whose mourning cannot be freely expressed. Those perceived to be responsible for the suicide are unwanted and marginalized in mourning settings. Whether the individual who committed suicide should be buried according to Islamic rules is a contentious issue in mourning contexts. The grave of the individual who committed suicide is often not desired in the family cemetery. Gravestones are typically not placed in visible locations, and detailed identity information is often omitted. Conclusion: The research provides significant evidence of stigma and social exclusion in burial practices, offering valuable contributions to the scientific community. Every decision individuals make about their own lives deserves respect, and a person who has committed suicide deserves dignified treatment after death. A social law state is obliged to protect the rights of its citizens. Such stigma necessitates that the social law state take further measures to raise social awareness about suicide and provide rehabilitation for survivors. These topics should be included in the state education curriculum, and social awareness should be fostered from childhood. Continuous rehabilitative support programs should be implemented in healthcare institutions to address the issues faced by survivors.

Para los que vivimos este cambio epocal, muchas cosas son distintas a cuando éramos chicos, y nuestros padres y abuelos nos contaban sobre la amistad, el trabajo, la familia, las crisis, el país, las tradiciones... Pocas décadas han pasado desde que nadie faltaba a los velorios, sean de un familiar o de un vecino, y no en pocas ocasiones el cajón del difunto se colocaba en la habitación principal de la casa o en el propio dormitorio del muerto. Hoy en día encontramos por un lado, los denominados "jardines de paz", no velar, tumbas virtuales, cremación... En contraposición a este intento de no ver, oler, tocar, sentir, la muerte, encontramos sendos velorios mediáticos multitudinarios, tales como el de Alfonsín, la Negra Sosa, Peña, Sandro...

O campo de estudos da morte e do morrer é amplo e multidisciplinar. Em se tratando de um fenômeno ubíquo e universal, não é de se espantar a pluralidade das abordagens para o estudo da morte. Desde a década de 1960, os estudos sobre morte e morrer nas Ciências Sociais vêm crescendo e se consolidando em um campo com questões, agendas de pesquisa e temáticas consolidadas. Os rituais em torno da morte, dos cadáveres e do adoecimento, as práticas de cuidado, controle e gestão dos corpos mortos ou dos sujeitos em processo de morrer, as crenças, ideias, representações e valores que informam e dão sentido ao fim da vida, todos esses são objetos dentro do guarda-chuva da literatura presente no dossiê apresentado nesse artigo. Ao longo do texto, oferecemos um panorama das questões da área e pontuamos como estas dialogam com os artigos que integram o dossiê.

Indonéziában a természeti katasztrófák gyakorisága elülteti az emberekben az az élet ideiglenességének, átmenetiségének kulturális tapasztalatát. Ez a világképformáló tapasztalat alapvető eltéréseket mutat a nyugati világ egocentrikus világképével. Dolgozatom a keleti és a nyugati szemléletnek ezt a különbségét a Merapi vulkánhoz kapcsolódó mitológiai képzetek, történeti események és építészeti megoldások metszetében vizsgálja.

A COVID-19 járvány miatt a betegek biztonságos ellátásában jelentős szerephez jutott a távkonzultációs beszélgetés. 2020 áprilisában kormányrendelet szabályozta és több szakterületen is engedélyezte a telemedicinális platformok használatát. A járvány alatti háziorvoslás tapasztalatai alapján a háziorvosok közel 90%-a továbbra is támogatja az orvosi távkonzultációt. A tanulmány célja egy vizsgálati módszer bemutatása, amelyet egy, a Pécsi Tudományegyetem Általános Orvostudományi Karán folytatott kutatás keretén belül alkalmazunk. A kutatás során háziorvosi praxisokban, reumatológiai, bőrgyógyászati és gasztroenterológiai szakrendeléseken az Etikai Bizottság engedélyével és a betegek beleegyezésével hangfelvételek készülnek. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la cobertura periodística de los debates sobre “muerte digna” en la prensa escrita Argentina en el período 2011-2015, en ocasión de la discusión y aprobación de la llamada ley de “muerte digna” en el país. Se realizó un relevamiento de noticias en La Nación, Clarín y Página/12 y se conformó un corpus de 373 artículos periodísticos que fueron analizados a partir de un análisis cuantitativo y de análisis temático. Jelen cikk szerzője arra keresi a választ, hogy a mindinkább mediatizálódó társadalom milyen hatással van a hagyományos orvos-beteg kapcsolatokra és a kommunikációs attitűdökre. A gyógyítás, befolyásolás sikere az orvos szociális képességein (is) múlik, azon, hogy hogyan tudja alakítani a beteg egészséggel és betegséggel kapcsolatos attitűdjeit. A sikeres befolyásoláshoz mindeddig szükség volt a nonverbális jelekre is, az állandó visszacsatolásra, betegkövetésre. Ezek azonban az internetes kommunikáció során szükségszerűen elmaradnak. Beszélhetünk-e ebben az új helyzetben gyógyításról, vagy csupán tanácsadásról van szó?

There is no established interpretation of Heidegger that gives an elaborate account of the phenomena of loss and mourning, let alone gauges its importance for our understanding and assessment of authentic existence in Heidegger. This paper attempts to do both. First, I give a detailed exposition of Heidegger's analysis of the phenomena of mourning and loss and show that Heidegger's analysis of mourning in his early and late work is strikingly in line with his collectivist understanding of Being-with. This demonstrates, contrary to what some of his proponents argue, that Heidegger does not follow the kind of dynamic understanding of Being-with that places the other within fine-grained spaces of possibility. Second, with reference to Heidegger's existential philosophy, I construct a phenomenology of mourning and grief. Though Heidegger himself fails to explain the relationships in which one mourns after a close other, we can develop a unique phenomenology of mourning with reference to Heidegger, which shows that each loss is singular and can be equiprimordial with one's own death in opening one to the possibility of an authentic existence. In this new understanding of authenticity, loss is regarded as a powerful force, akin to death, in leading one toward their self-owned existence.

Több forrásra támaszkodva (pl. szakirodalom, szakemberekkel ? orvosok, nővérek ? illetve korábbi betegekkel végzett interjúk) pozitív szuggesztiókon alapuló pszichológiai támogatás protokollját dolgoztuk ki a lélegeztetett betegek pszichés támogatására. Igazodva a lélegeztetés fázisaihoz, azok pszichológiai tartalmát leírva fókuszpontokat és szuggesztiós szövegjavaslatokat tettünk közzé. 2. E megközelítés hatékonyságát igazolandó szuggesztiós támogatást kapó, illetve abban nem részesülő betegcsoport gyógyulását vetettük össze. Az objektív adatok (lélegeztetés hossza, intenzív kezelés hossza, túlélési arány) erős tendenciát mutatott a szuggesztiók hatékonyságára nézve. A páciensek szubjektív élményeinek tartalomelemzése alapján elmondhatjuk, hogy a szuggesztiós csoport tagjai kevésbé kötik a kezeléssel járó negatívumokat a lélegeztetéshez, és kezelésüket ? a kontrolhoz képest ? ?tudatosabban?, több emlékkel, a környezethez illetve a kezelőszemélyzethez való aktívabb és kedvezőbb k...

COVID-19 has not only dramatically changed the way we live, it has also impacted how we die and how we grieve. With more and more Americans dying in ICU settings, away from family, and more funerals being held virtually, the pandemic has seriously curtailed normal expressions of grief and cultural mourning. Given the CDC guidelines for funerals and social distancing, simple human touch is no longer a mitigating force against prolonged grief. So, while one epidemic has a face and a name, we point to a second, more silent yet potentially equally devastating one, unacknowledged grief, and emphasize how policy can be a current therapeutic. We can wait for a vaccine, but we can also act now through thoughtful policymaking that acknowledges this second epidemic.

A kognitív tudomány gyakorlatilag értelmetlenné tette az Én fogalmát, ez pedig számos problémát von maga után. A nihilizmus vádját elkerülő megoldást keresve, a megtestesült elme hipotézisén alapuló kognitív tudományos irányzat apologétái közül többen a filozófiához fordultak segítségért. Olyan Én koncepció után kutattak, ami a kognitív tudományos eredményekkel összhangban, nem tételezi egy független, elkülönülő, permanens, esszenciális Én létezését, ugyanakkor a kognitív tudományos modellelalkotáshoz jól illeszthető. A buddhista filozófia éntelenség doktrínája alkalmasnak tűnik erre a szerepre. A tanulmányban a buddhizmus éntelenség doktrínájának filozófiai alapja- it és legfontosabb téziseit prezentálom. A vizsgálódás célja annak jobb megértése, hogy mitől válhatott az éntelenség buddhista koncepciója teoretikus és módszertani szempontból is aktuálissá, a megtestesült elme hipotéziséből kiinduló kognitív tudományos szemlélet képviselői számára.

A várandósság örömteli mivolta mellett nagy igénybevételt jelent a női szervezet számára, és ez alól a szájüreg, fogazat sem kivétel. Az elhanyagolt fogazat számos veszélyt jelent nemcsak az anya, hanem a magzat számára is. Az anyánál kialakulhat többek között fogínyvérzés, -gyulladás, fogszuvasodás; a magzatnál pedig fogfejlődési rendellenesség, fertőzés, koraszülés vagy akár vetélés is. Kutatások kimutatták, hogy azok a terhes nők, akik sűrűbben részt vesznek fogászati szűréseken, nagyobb súlyú újszülöttet hoztak világra és alacsonyabb volt a perinatalis szövődmények előfordulása, mint azoknál, akik ritkán vagy egyáltalán nem jártak vizsgálatokon. Éppen ezért fontos a várandósok fokozott dentális gondozása a terhesség alatt, ami nemcsak a fogászati ellátásban/ellenőrzésben valósulhat meg, hanem az egészségügyi ellátás minden szintjén és szinte minden szakembere által, akivel a várandós a kilenc hónap alatt találkozik.

A rehabilitációs ellátás hazánkban jellemzően kórházakban történik. A rehabilitációban tevékenykedő szakemberekskollégák évtizedekkel ezelőtt felismerték, hogy a társadalom idősödése, a krónikus egészségi állapotok gyakoribbá válása miatt a szükségletek ilyen módon nem lesznek kielégíthetők. Kísérleti lakóközösségi rehabilitációs programokat indítottak. Jelentős tapasztalat a közösségi pszichiátria területén alakult ki. Az Egészségügyi Szakmai Kollégium Rehabilitációs Tagozata és Tanácsa Rehabilitációs Ellátási Programokat fejlesztett, amelyek az optimális betegutakat bemutatják. Az ezekkel kapcsolatos bizonyítékokat szakkönyv foglalja össze. Az egészségügyi ellátás reformja aktualitást ad az eddigi tapasztalatok feldolgozásának, a rendelkezésre álló erőforrások, valamint a közösségi rehabilitációs programok fejlesztését támogató, illetve akadályozó tényezők számbavételének. We propose looking at digital death as an essentially connective experience. Digital death connects death roles, functions, information, avatars, aliases etc. Through re-mediations, Digital death grows indefinitely, without losing vividness. Although fragmented, Digital death may be more than a sum of fragments. We could see it as thought-through death, a joint flow of reflected experiences that no user can avoid in her everyday navigation.
Digital death has no boundaries and no closure. In death, the realm of consociates emphasises reciprocal responsibility (trustful, closure oriented), while the realm of tele-co-presence emphasises spiritual interlocking (malleable, exploratory, redemptive, impending closure).

The challenges of grief caused by the COVID-19 epidemic and how to deal with it are serious issues affecting people worldwide, including Iran. Accordingly, the present study aimed to explore the nature of mourning for those who lost their family members during the COVID-19 epidemic and identify the quality of strategies used to cope with it. Methods: This qualitative study was conducted using a grounded theory approach. The study participants were 20 survivors of COVID-19 in Tehran City, Iran, who were grieving the loss of their loved ones during the epidemic in 2021. The participants were selected using purposeful sampling. The data were collected through quasi-structured interviews with the participants. The collected data were analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding. Results: The results revealed three main categories: Underlying factors affecting grief (beliefs and attitudes toward death and the afterlife, the public reaction to grief, the specific position and role of the deceased), the nature and development of grief (including feelings of anger at the community and the medical staff, the nature of death due to COVID-19 and blaming oneself for the illness and death of the deceased), and coping and managing grief (coping the thought of death and the meaning of life, inducing life in oneself and other survivors, and changing the pattern of thinking and behaving towards others and life). Conclusion: The COVID-19 survivors who are grieving the loss of their loved ones can use this model to better understand and manage to cope with grief and adapt to it simultaneously. Ultimately, this process led to adaptation to mourning and adopting effective coping strategies in the COVID-19 survivors. The core category revealed in the study was "optimal coping with grief and loss during the COVID-19 epidemic".

69 éves polymorbid férfi betegnél kardiológiai rehabilitációja során fedezték fel daganatos betegségét. A betegnek világossejtes vesesejtes carcinomája igazolódott ossealis metastasisokkal, mely miatt radikális nephrectomián esett át. Ezt követően került a SZAKK Onkoterápiás Klinika látóterébe. A beteg a daganatos betegség diagnózisa előtt kardiológiai, belgyógyászati és pulmonológiai gondozás alatt állt DCMP, ISZB, krónikus cor pulmonale, aorta stenosis, hypertonia, köszvény, hyperlipidaemia, COPD, idült légzési elégtelenség miatt.  Tekintettel a beteg komorbiditásai és kardiális állapota alapján várható tolerabilitási profilra pazopanib kezelés indult dózisredukcióval. A 14 hónapos palliatív terápia során végig szoros onkokardiológiai obszerváció történt. Kardiológiai státuszában nem történt romlás, a beteg végig megőrizte egyensúlyi állapotát. Ezt követően egyéb, a kezeléssel nem összefüggő panaszai, valamint onkológiai szempontból stabil állapota miatt terápiáját felfüggesztettük, a beteg jelenleg is drug-holiday-on van, belgyógyászati és kardiológiai betegségei jelenleg is egyensúlyban vannak. Az eset bemutatja, hogy súlyos polymorbiditásokkal rendelkező beteg is részesülhet szoros kardiológiai obszerváció mellett olyan aktív onkológiai kezelésben, mely mellett kardiális esemény előfordulhat.

A tanulmány felidézi a keresztény vallás előtti ember találkozását a keresztény vallás tanításaival, majd nyomon követi a kereszténység gyengülésének okait, azaz a „természet Istenének” (deizmus) reneszánszát a filozófiában és a művészetekben. El artículo examina la influencia de valores religiosos -específicamente de la Iglesia católica- en la regulación de los derechos de los pacientes con enfermedades terminales a rechazar tratamientos por parte del Congreso Nacional de Argentina. A partir del análisis de las iniciativas parlamentarias sobre la temática (entre 1996 y 2012), se discuten las tensiones y articulaciones entre argumentos confesionales y laicos en los intentos de legislar sobre las decisiones en el final de la vida. Se describen las fuentes y los argumentos presentes en estas iniciativas, y la invocación a valores religiosos para fundamentar posiciones divergentes respecto a los derechos de los pacientes terminales. La importante presencia y la apelación a valores religiosos responden a una particular configuración de la laicidad y de la cultura política argentina, que refleja la cristalización de espacios de complementariedad entre lo religioso y lo político.
