Solutrense

Five basic Solutrean point types from the Iberian Peninsula are analysed at local, regional and Pan-Iberian scales in this book. The author reports new results concerning production process and object biography in relation to raw material procurement, technological strategies during production and use-life, site type and regional features. Significant regional differences between Northern and Southern Iberia are demonstrated, which go far beyond typological observations. Evidence indicates that different settlement and mobility patterns are responsible for these regional adaptations of technological innovations. The author successfully links point techno-morphology to human land use. The book is a major resource for the study of Solutrean points, as well as for studies on projectile points in general. In addition, it serves as a guideline for how to approach the study of land use of palaeolithic hunter-gatherers on the base of lithic technology.

In the summer of 2011 several test pits were made in the Higueral-Guardia Cave (Málaga, Spain). The sondages have determined the existence of an important Upper and Middle Paleolithic archaeological sequence, still under study. However, the illegal digging activity in the cave have significantly limited the possibilities of interpretation of the Solutrean levels. In this paper we present some preliminary results of the field work, and at the same time, establish a discussion about the value of such records in order to establish deeper anthropological interpretations. Aspects such as the intensity of the occupation, the diachronic value of the archaeological record, or the functionality of the site are discussed.

Los abrigos de Finca de Doña Martina (FDM) y La Boja (ADB) presentan secuencias del Paleolítico superior en curso de excavación. FDM contiene un nivel epimagdaleniense superpuesto a un espeso paquete del Solutrense superior, fechado por radiocarbono en aproximadamente 23000 cal BP, y separado de la roca de base por una unidad cuyo contenido arqueológico se atribuye, de forma provisional, al Gravetiense. En ADB, la secuencia empieza con un nivel posiblemente del Magdaleniense superior, al que le sigue un potente paquete esteril bajo el cual se desarrolla una secuencia del Solutrense. En la base de un sondeo que llegó hasta 2,5 m de la superficie del relleno, se alcanzó un nivel rico en objetos de adorno y sin elementos de dorso que, por su fecha radiocarbónica de aproximadamente 25000 cal BP, se atribuye, de forma provisional, al Solutrense inferior.

Los descubrimientos llevados a cabo en los últimos años están haciendo que el sureste e convierta en referencia para todos los estudiosos del Paleolítico. La Cueva del Arco, ubicada en el paraje del Cañón de Almadenes (Cieza, Murcia), posee una de las secuencias más importantes para comprender la tran-sición entre el Paleolítico Medio y el Superior en nuestra Región. Además, se trata de uno de los pocos  yacimientos del sureste que aglutina arte rupestre y ocupaciones paleolíticas. Sin duda, se trata de un  yacimiento de gran interés científico y que ha generado un gran impacto social. En esta comunicación se presentará un compendio de los hallazgos desde el comienzo de las intervenciones, en el año 2015, hasta el momento.

Located at the crossroads of two rather different ecological and cultural worlds (Mediterranean Spain and Portuguese Atlantic), the site of Vale Boi (Algarve, Portugal) is a crucial element in understanding the economic and social traits of the communities that inhabited Southwestern Iberia during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Combining an open-air with a rockshelter component, Vale Boi presents a lengthy Solutrean record starting with a Proto-Solutrean phase followed by a set of occupations in the 25 to 20.3 ka cal BP time-span. The very rich and well preserved assemblages proved that the site was treated, throughout, as a seasonal residential camp and although a striking combination of exogenous cultural traits has been identified, regional adaptive idiosyncrasies are quite evident. This paper focuses on the results of the lithics, fauna, beads and portable art analysis from Vale Boi, and their impact on the comprehension of the LGM ecodynamics in Southwestern Iberia. Resumen. Localizado en el marco de dos contextos diferentes desde el punto de vista ecológico y cultural (el Mediterráneo español y el Atlántico portugués), el yacimiento de Vale Boi (Algarve, Portugal) es un lugar fundamental para comprender la organización económica y social de las comunidades que habitaron el sudoeste de la Península Ibérica durante el Último Máximo Glacial (LGM). Situado en una zona en la que se combinan ocupaciones al aire libre y en abrigo, Vale Boi presenta un amplio registro solutrense que comienza con el Proto-Solutrense y a la que le siguen un amplio número de ocupaciones entre el 25 y el 20,3 ka BP. El importante y bien preservado conjunto demuestra que este asentamiento funcionó como un campamento residencia estacional. Aunque han sido identificados diversos caracteres culturales de origen exógeno, son también evidentes los elementos adaptativos idiosincráticos. El presente artículo se centra en los resultados de los análisis del utillaje lítico, la fauna, las cuentas ornamentals y los objetos de arte mueble de Vale Boi y su impacto en la comprensión ecodinámica del LGM en el sudoeste de la Península Ibérica.

The archaeological site of Las Delicias (Madrid, Spain) is known since the excavation conducted at the location by H. Obermaier and P. Wernert in the late 1917. It has been one of the classical references for the Palaeolithic of the Madrid region, despite the varied interpretations that have been posited to explain its problematic lithic assemblage. Following a historiographical analysis of the site’s interpretations, we present the results of a research project initiated in the winter of 2008. This project was centered in the excavation of part of the quaternary deposits still present in the area, and its main objective was to gain a better geoarchaeological understanding of the site in order to solve the questions that it has traditionally posed to the discipline. The technological analysis of the lithics, together with the lithological and geomorphological analysis of the deposit, allows us to place Las Delicias in the Solutrean period. Thus, besides some isolated finds, this site becomes the only one in the Manzanares area containing Solutrean industries in a well-defined stratigraphic position and excavated with modern methods. We make some reflections on the implications of our findings for the discussion on the human settlement of Central Iberia during the middle part of the Upper Palaeolithic.

This paper focus on the technological aspects of the solutrean lithic assemblage from the Upper Paleolithic site of Vale Boi – Abrigo.
The main goal of this study, still preliminary, is to obtain a general knowledge of the patterns of exploitation of the different rawmaterials,as well as the characterization of the choices taken in the reduction sequences.

The archaeological site of Valverde is placed on a slope of the Valverde Mount, near one of the entrances into the basin of Monforte de Lemos (Galicia, Lugo). After the finding of a lithic scatter survey works were carried out in 2007-2009, yielding more than 1000 implements. The lithic assemblage is characterized by the presence of expedient “chaines operatoires” made on quartz and medium-quality quartzite. On the other hand, blade and microblade blanks are produced on rock crystal and fine-grained quartzite, the latter from outcrops located 7 km to the SW. Although scarce, the use of allochthonous flint is also attested. Based on the reduction sequences identified at the site, and namely, on the presence of two broken leaf points, a Solutrean adscription for this assemblage is proposed, therefore becoming the first evidence of LGM settlement in the inner part of NW Iberia.

GIS applications in the geoarchaeological characterization of the Palaeolithic site of Las Delicias (Madrid, Spain) and 3D representation of results.

The open-air Palaeolithic site of Las Delicias, located in the Manzanares river valley (Madrid, Spain), has been the object of recent archaeological excavations during 2008 and 2009. Field data gathered at the site has been processed through Geographic Information Systems software, and results have been represented in 3D. We have achieved a topographic and archaeological database which has been associated with 3D planimetries through GIS. At the micro-spatial level, this database will allow future studies on different topics, such as the genesis of the deposits and their conservation, displacement patterns of the archaeological objects, refitting of lithic pieces and planning of future excavation seasons at the site.

Las ultimas investigaciones realizadas a partir de la excavacion del registro arqueologico de La Cueva de Ambrosio -yacimiento clave a la hora de estudiar el Solutrense del SE de la Peninsula Iberica-nos han permitido realizar una serie de precisiones sobre su posicion en la escala cronoestratigrafica del Pleistoceno superior. Asi, la calibracion de una nueva datacion radiocarbonica para el nivel IV (Solutrense Superior) y de otras seis nuevas fechas 14C (5 de ellas AMS) para el nivel II (Solutrense Superior Evolucionado), permite situar estos momentos entre el final del Greenland Stadial GS 3 (final del OIS 3) y el final del Greenland Interstadial GI 2, con un momento algido de ocupacion del nivel II en los momentos posteriores al Heinrich Event H-2, coincidiendo con el interestadial que precede al ultimo maximo glacial (GS 2). Esto retrotrae en la escala cronoestratigrafica la posicion del registro de Ambrosio, situado hasta estos momentos en funcion de las tres fechas radiocarbon...

Este trabajo se centra en el estudio geológico, petrológico, morfotécnico y morfopotencial de los productos líticos localizados en la única excavación arqueológica desa-rrollada en la Fontanilla (Conil de la Frontera, Cádiz). Su localización al aire libre y cercano a la costa, lo con-vierten en un lugar único y de interés para el estudio de estas sociedades del paleolítico. Igualmente, se presentan dos dataciones absolutas inéditas obtenidas por termolu-ministencia (TL) que han permitido relacionar este sitio, junto con sus evidencias materiales, con sociedades de cazadores-recolectores con tecnología Solutrense y su movilidad por diferentes medios naturales. Abstract This work is focused on the geological, petrologic, mor-photechnical and morphopotencial study of the lithic products located in the only archaeological excavation developed in La Fontanilla, Conil de la Frontera, Cádiz. The open-air location and proximity to the coast turn it into a unique site and of interest for the study of these Paleolithic societies. Two unprecedented and absolute datings, obtained by thermoluminescence (TL), are also presented. Thanks to these datings it has been possible to relate this site, along with its material evidences, to hunter-gatherer societies that used Solutrean technology and to their movements among different natural environments.

The aim of the 3rd International Conference on the Solutrean 2017 is to bring together scientists working on hunter-gatherer societies of Western Europe during the Last Glacial Maximum. The conference is organized by the Interdisciplinary Center for Archaeology and Evolution of Human Behavior (ICArEHB) together with colleagues from the University of Cologne and Neanderthal Museum, and will be hosted at the Universidade do Algarve (Faro, Portugal) from 12th to 14th October 2017.
This year's edition continues a series of conferences on the Solutrean that took first place in Preuilly-sur-Claise, France, in 2007, and subsequently in Vélez-Blanco, Almería, Spain, in 2012.

Tais considerandos, permitiram, a discussão da sequência cronológica e tipológica-industrial do Solutrense em Portugal comparando tais resultados com os conhecidos em outras áreas peninsulares, designadamente a Cornija Cantábrica e o litoral mediterrânico.

The archaeological site of Vale Boi represents an important role for the understanding of the human occupations at Southern Portugal during the Upper Paleolithic. The goal of this paper is to reveal the preliminary results of the technological and use wear analysis of gravettian and solutrean materials. This method claims a mental reconstruction of the chainnê operatoire adopted by the human occupations at Vale Boi during the Upper Paleolithic.

Presentamos aquí los resultados de las últimas investigaciones llevadas a cabo en las cuevas de La Lluera (San Juan de Priorio, Oviedo) en lo referido a sus niveles solutrenses. Estas dos cavidades, a pesar de lo reducido de sus dimensiones que resultan mínimas en el caso de la conocida como Lluera II, presentan unas características tanto geomorfológicas y estratigráficas como culturales y artísticas que las convierten en referencia obligada para la comprensión de las ocupaciones solutrenses presentes en la cuenca media del río Nalón en el Tardiglaciar.
Excavadas a lo largo de los años 80 del pasado siglo mediante una metodología específica basada en la gestión meticulosa de la información intra-site, están siendo objeto desde el año 2008 de un estudio integral gracias al empleo de las actuales tecnologías digitales de documentación, exploración láser, fotogrametría de alta resolución (HD) y restitución digital en tres dimensiones (3D), que evidencian tanto sus relaciones artístico-culturales internas como con el resto de yacimientos del entorno geográfico en que se encuentran incluidas y que resultan de gran relevancia a la hora de explicar el poblamiento solutrense, sobre todo en lo referido al momento Solutrense superior, del área central asturiana.

"La baume d'Oullins dans les gorges de l'Ardèche contient l'une des stratigraphies les plus importantes pour le Paléolithique supérieur du sud-est de la France. Le Solutréen y est particulièrement bien représenté avec plusieurs riches niveaux des phases ancienne, moyenne et supérieure de ce technocomplexe. L'étude technologique récente des industries de deux niveaux, Solutréen supérieur fouilles Bazile par Guillaume Boccaccio (Boccaccio 2005) et Solutréen ancien collection Martin par Sophie Guégan (Guégan 2007), ont permis d'identifier dans ces niveaux un certain nombre de matières premières. Parmi elles, un groupe homogène de silex blonds translucides, comportant parfois de grosses ponctuations noires-brunes, a particulièrement attiré notre attention. En effet, cette matière ne semble pas connue dans l'environnement géologique local, ce qui reste toutefois à vérifier. L’hypothèse d’une origine allochtone a rapidement été envisagée.
La mise en place d'une équipe de recherche autour de ce projet a pu se concrétiser grâce aux travaux simultanés des 2 PCR consacrés aux matières premières lithiques en Rhône-Alpes et en Languedoc-Roussillon.

L'échantillon sélectionné dans le cadre de cette étude comprend 12 pièces issues du solutréen ancien de la collection Martin et 1 pièce provenant du Solutréen supérieur des fouilles Bazile. Ces différentes pièces forment un groupe très homogène du point de vue des caractères macroscopiques. Ces silex blonds très translucides présentent une texture particulièrement fine et "grasse" au toucher qui signe une exceptionnelle aptitude à la taille à laquelle les solutréens ont été sensibles.
Un premier examen mené par Javier Mangado montre une matrice pauvre en éléments figurés. L’absence de foraminifères se retrouve dans toutes les pièces, tandis que les bryozoaires, présents, confirment une origine marine. L’échantillon est surtout caractérisé par la présence de ces larges ponctuations brunes-noires d’aspect dendritique ou non. L’observation préliminaire des pièces par Paul Fernandes a permis de mettre en évidence quelques éléments supplémentaires : les néo-.cortex semblent indiquer des collectes dans l’environnement d’origine, l’aspect général des transformations post-génétiques de la matrice présente quelques indices discriminants.

Sur la base de cette première approche, il convenait de vérifier, dans un premier temps, l'absence supposée d'une telle matière première dans la vallée du Rhône, en Languedoc-Roussillon mais aussi dans le Massif central. Bien que le Solutréen y soit totalement absent, la zone provençale a également été englobée dans l'analyse. En l'état actuel des travaux sur ces quatre régions, aucun gîte répertorié ne fournit de matière permettant de soutenir une quelconque comparaison. Les travaux actifs de prospections menés dans le cadre des PCR confirment cette absence (Boccaccio, Bressy, Fernandes, Grégoire). Par ailleurs, si une origine locale devait être envisagée, au vue de son exceptionnelle aptitude à la taille et de la dimension importante des blocs disponibles (supports laminaires de grande dimension), cette matière aurait probablement fait l’objet d’une exploitation paléolithique autrement plus poussée, à l’image des affleurements de Rochemaure-Meysse (Ardèche). Sa rareté voire son absence dans la majorité des assemblages du Paléolithique supérieur bas-rhodanien confirment indirectement le caractère probablement exogène de ces pièces.
À partir de ces éléments, la recherche de sources potentielles, avec une amplitude géographique plus importante, a rapidement permis d’identifier un silex provenant du Turonien inférieur de la vallée du cher, type C3a-2 de Thierry Aubry (Aubry 1991), comme étant un bon candidat à la comparaison. L’analyse de J. Mangado montre d’ores et déjà que le matériel micropaléontologique conservé est compatible avec une origine turonienne de Touraine.

Partant de ce constat, il nous faut pour confirmer l'hypothèse d'une origine lointaine, plus précisément le Turonien de la vallée du Nahon (Primault 2003) en optimisant les techniques de caractérisation. La nature et l’origine géographique des ces pièces exigent pour leur reconnaissance la mise en place d’un protocole renouvelé. Pour chaque pièce archéologique étudiée, il s’agit d’établir la succession des phases de cristallisation et de transformation qui constitue « la chaîne évolutive » propre à chaque matériau qui à suivi un itinéraire édificateur. Ce mode opératoire analytique est fondé sur un examen complet des séries archéologiques et géologiques à différentes échelles (macroscopique, microscopique ultra-microscopique). A ces observations s’ajoute le recours à la microsonde et aux diverses possibilités qu’offre la spectrométrie infrarouge. La caractérisation de chaque chaîne par le décryptage des transformations post-génétiques autorise une détermination plus précise des lieux de collecte.
     
La présence, dans le Solutréen ardéchois, d’une telle matière à plus de 500 km des sources (soupçonnées à ce stade de la démarche) ouvre bien évidemment des perspectives paléogéographiques nouvelles et inattendues. Ainsi le groupe solutréen languedocien pourrait être en relation directe ou indirecte avec des groupes du nord du Massif central ce qui tendrait à bouleverser notre approche des sociétés solutréennes d’Ardèche. Dès lors, la question des voies de circulation se pose avec acuité sachant que le pléniglaciaire est généralement considérée comme une période peu propice au franchissement des montagnes. 

En conclusion, cette étude ouvre des perspectives paléogéographiques, paléoclimatiques et comportementales exceptionnelles pour la connaissance des groupes Solutréens et du Paléolithique supérieur en général.

Estuda-se um astrágalo de Rinoceronte, Dicerorhinus hemitoechus, proveniente da gruta do Escoural (Montemor-o-Novo). É a primeira vez que a presença desta espécie é assinalada em Portugal. A sua biometria sugere a hipótese de exemplar pré-wurmiano, reforçada pela ocorrência de Crocuta crocuta intermedia.

Historically, the inner territories of the Iberian Peninsula, dominated by the upland regions of the Central Spanish plateau and the Central System range, have been depicted as a nearly depopulated area during the Late Pleniglacial or Marine Isotopic Stage 2, and especially during the Last Glacial Maximum. This is in contrast with the common consideration of the Iberian coastal areas as part of a southwestern European ecological refugium during the harshest periods of the last glacial cycle. This model has been affirmed in recent surveys, and only very recently has faced some important challenges, coming from new field data. Here we discuss these new data and propose new hypotheses and avenues of research on the human-environment interactions in Central Iberia around the LGM.

The aforementioned data come basically from 2 sites located in the Tagus River basin: (1) Las Delicias, a classic open-air site in the Manzanares valley (Madrid) that has been recently re-excavated, and (2) Peña Capón, a rock shelter close to the southern foothills of the Central System range (Sorbe valley, Guadalajara), where recent analyses of lithic and bone materials have been developed. Geoarchaeological, chronometric and palaeoecological information coming from these sites allow positing preliminary hypotheses concerning the settlement of Central Iberia during MIS 2, and namely during Solutrean times.

Las Delicias hosts a Middle or Upper Solutrean lithic workshop, and the Peña Capón rock shelter functioned as a hunting camp during several moments within MIS 2, including at least Protosolutrean and Middle Solutrean times. These data, together with other Solutrean findings in the region, imply the existence of territorial organization, and hence some degree of stable settlement. Therefore, they call into question the classic model of the Meseta as a depopulated or crossing area during the Late Pleniglacial. In contrast, we hypothesize that the human occupation of Central Iberia during MIS 2 was more stable than previously thought, and probably included the settlement of some areas during the LGM and other harsh climatic and environmental events of the last glacial cycle.
It is soon to conclude whether these human occupations (1) were related to relatively favorable episodes around or within the LGM, (2) were favored by the existence of ecological refugia, or (3) reflect the adaptability of hunter-gatherers to harsh environments. Although current data does not allow to decide on such possibilities, future field work, planned to be done very soon, will contribute to investigate these and other key topics related to human-environment interactions around the LGM. This research will focus on site formation processes, both at the macroscopic and microscopic level, and also on gaining more chronometric and palaeoecological data at Las Delicias and Peña Capón.

Current information is still insufficient for building solid models on human-environment interactions during the LGM in Central Iberia. However, it allows, for the first time in the discipline’s history, to propose hypotheses based on valuable empirical data. Our imminent new field research on the Late Pleniglacial of this area will contribute to increase our knowledge of a long-standing underestimated archaeological record.

S’il est une région en France où le Solutréen ancien reste méconnu, malgré le nombre important de gisements archéologiques s’y rapportant, c’est la moyenne vallée du Rhône. Plus spécifiquement, aucune approche technologique moderne n’avait été entreprise sur les séries lithiques attribuées à la phase ancienne du Solutréen dans le bassin Rhodanien, depuis les thèses de P. E. L. Smith en 1966 et J. Combier en 1967. Toutefois, plus récemment, un travail de maîtrise effectué en 2002 par A. Barbiero, a porté sur l’analyse typologique des pointes à face plane et pointes à cran provenant des anciennes fouilles à Oullins (Gard-Ardèche, France), gisement situé en plein coeur des gorges de l’Ardèche et occupé depuis le Moustérien jusqu’à l’Azilien. Nous proposons ainsi dans cet article, une révision typologique de l’objet emblématique de cette phase ancienne, à savoir la pointe à face plane, couplée à une approche techno-économique, à partir de l’une des collections lithiques issue de ces anciennes fouilles à la baume d’Oullins, la collection Maurice Martin, et dont l’attribution chrono-culturelle se rapporte au Solutréen ancien. Bien que mise au jour à la fin des années 1930 et avec des méthodes de fouilles aujourd’hui dépassées, cette collection, caractérisée par la présence dans le niveau étudié, le niveau 2, d’un très grand nombre de pointes à face plane, et sous-jacent selon l’auteur, à un niveau à pointes à cran, présente une bonne cohérence sur le plan technique. L’analyse des matières premières, par laquelle commence cet article, a révélé des choix économiques originaux pour le contexte paléoclimatique dans lequel se place l’horizon archéologique étudié, à savoir le Dernier Maximum Glaciaire, avec notamment l’emploi de silex de provenance lointaine au détriment des matières premières siliceuses plus locales, attestant notamment des déplacements jusque dans le Cher, ainsi qu’un franchissement du Rhône. Il faut rappeler qu’à ce moment précis du Paléolithique supérieur, la rive gauche du Rhône est occupée par des groupes appartenant à une autre sphère culturelle, l’Épigravettien ancien. L’étude typologique, réalisée principalement autour de la pointe à face plane, a permis de mettre en avant une réelle homogénéité de cet objet au sein de cet ensemble, marquée notamment par une latéralisation de la retouche quasi exclusivement à gauche avec toutefois pour seule différence majeure la symétrie de l’objet, tantôt axiale, tantôt déjetée vers la droite. Elle a d’autre part, permis d’aborder les questionnements quant à son usage, qui, pour l’heure, restent entièrement ouverts. L’étude technologique a permis de confirmer la présence d’un débitage singulier pour le Paléolithique supérieur, à savoir l’exploitation de la face la plus large du nucléus grâce à la mise en place de crêtes latérales, en vue d’obtenir des supports de pointes à face plane. Ces observations rejoignent ainsi celles déjà faites dans le Bassin parisien et sur d’autres collections du Sud-Ouest de la France.
