Spanish Animation Film

This article analyzes the Spanish-produced and internationally distributed animation film El Cid: The Legend (Pozo 2003) in its pedagogical and ideological dimensions as a medievalist Disney-type genre animation film within the post-9/11 global sociopolitical and media context. Pozo re-signifies the story of El Cid by merging two narratives and temporalities. On one level, the film constructs a narrative about medieval Iberia that incorporates progressive ideas about multicultural convivencia along with more traditionalist views of the Kingdom of Castile as the heroic re-civilizing agent of the Reconquista. The film also includes a Manichean narrative based on the post-Cold War media discourse-narrative of the War on Terror. In this manner, El Cid participates in a process of construction and pedagogical dissemination of a Spanish/western ideological ‘common sense’ that generates particular ways of conceiving and narrating the West’s relation with the Islamic world. This common sense combines liberal-humanist notions of multi-ethnic coexistence with neo-Orientalist imaginaries.

Este artículo analiza cómo influye el proceso de producción y distribución de una película de animación en la construcción del género, la raza y la identidad nacional de un personaje de ficción. La investigación se centra en la principal figura femenina de Las aventuras de Tadeo Jones (2012), uno de los largometrajes españoles que mejores resultados ha registrado tanto en la taquilla nacional como en el conjunto de Latinoamérica. El objetivo es relacionar estos elementos con el contexto histórico y económico en que se enmarca el filme. Partiendo de la asociación simbólica de la mujer con la nación y el territorio, se va a estudiar la constitución de la pareja en el relato como una experiencia de conquista amorosa y comercial. En este sentido, este estudio presta atención a cómo el mestizaje transmedia ha modelado a Sara Lavrof para adaptarla a las exigencias culturales de los diferentes mercados. A partir de ahí, se centra en cómo este proceso pone su cuerpo electrónico a disposición de los intereses comerciales de las compañías españolas que han participado en este largometraje de aventuras que actualiza la leyenda de El Dorado. El afán por evocar el pasado –en este caso el del imperio español- para interpretar el presente –la presencia de compañías transnacionales españolas en la región– se inscribe en una estrategia destinada a naturalizar las relaciones postcoloniales. Identificar los mecanismos por los que esta exitosa cinta de cine familiar incorpora, utiliza y difunde estos conceptos es una de las metas de este trabajo.

This article discusses exoticism and self-exoticism in the representation of pre-revolutionary Cuban musicianship in two animated films: the 2010 Spanish/British co-production Chico and Rita and the 1985 Cuban film, Vampiros en la Habana. Within the similarly constructed animated archetypes on display, these films generate vastly different discursive outputs. Both texts are more interested in musicians as mythical figures than as comprehensive subjects, but where the mythology of Vampiros offers a dissenting, self-defined cultural identity, that of Chico and Rita employs a mythology of Otherness to reaffirm the cultural protagonism and hegemony of Euro- centric discourses. Although these films engage with similar archetypes, localities and representations of the exotic, the ways in which they do so evidence disparities in terms of intended audience, artistic intent, relationship to Cuba’s revolutionary project, and perspective towards Cuba’s cultural identity—all within the highly flexible, but highly codified and stigmatized, medium of animation.
