Spatial and temporal aspects of an object, site, area, region, event, age, era or epoch have always been important in historical or archaeological documentation or description. The visualization of spatial dimensionality is well modeled by geospatial systems. Timelines are used for visualizing serial progression along the temporal dimension. It is often the linkage between the temporal and spatial dimensions that is more illuminating. Functionality for visualization of spatiotemporal relationships is not available in standard geospatial information systems (GIS). A few systems that model and present spatio-temporal relationships exist currently.
