Standalone Photovoltaic

With the growing population and urbanization, intensity of electricity consumption has increased, which is leading to depletion of fossil fuels in our country from last decade. But energy generated by using renewable sources of energy like sun and wind, which is abundant and inexhaustible in nature, can help in reducing problem of requirement of energy. This study aims to assess suitability of hybrid power (solar & wind) generation system used in existing high-rise residential buildings and to find whether standalone hybrid power system (solar & wind) is suitable option for power generation for high rise residential buildings in Mumbai. The research methodology adopted is to survey buildings which have installed hybrid power (solar & wind) generation systems in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to examine the suitability of this system as an alternative to grid-based electric supply. These factors include technology, installation, operation, maintenance, utilization, site obstruction, structural issues, space requirement, economic feasibility or lack of awareness among people of our society about hybrid power system. The result indicates that with respect to the above factors, it is possible to adopt hybrid power system (solar and wind) as an alternative solution to grid electricity. High initial investment combined with longer payback period was found to be the key barrier to rampant utilization of this system.

This paper presents the simulation performance of control of a standalone photovoltaic (PV) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) system with transformerless inverter. The tested control strategy for PV module is based on Perturb and Observe (P&O) MPPT algorithm, and current and voltage are employed to enhance controllability of the control scheme applied into a dc-dc boost type power converter. A single-phase HERIC (Highly Efficient and Reliable Inverter Concept) transformerless inverter connected as an output to the converter is applied and controlled to feed ac loads.
