Terracotta Lamps

During almost ten years of Polish excavations in Ptolemais (Libya), a significant number of terracotta lamps from the Roman Imperial period have been discovered. While searching for supra-regional parallels, it appeared that most of the analogies were found on Crete within a group of locally produced lamps attributed to the workshop of Gamos, operating in the second century AD. This led to an attempt to collect information on all known forms and decorative motifs attributed to the above-mentioned workshop. The finds from Ptolemais presented here constitute an important group in light of still on-going discussion on the provenance, functioning and distribution of lamps signed ΓΑΜΟΥ,
and in a broader context, provide a glimpse on the relations between both parts of the province.

Prace wykopaliskowe prowadzone w miastach libijskiej Pentapolis dostarczyły szeregu zabytków przedstawiających pojedynki gladiatorów, bądź samych walczących. W kontekście demograficznym prowincji, która od czasów Wielkiej Kolonizacji należała do kręgu kultury greckiej, tego rodzaju znaleziska stanowią ciekawy punkt wyjścia do rozważań na temat stopnia romanizacji lokalnej ludności w okresie środkoworzymskim (II- poł. III w.).
W referacie przedstawione zostaną zabytki epigraficzno-ikonograficzne, na jakie składają się stele gladiatorskie z Ptolemais, malowidło w grobowcu Tomba dei Ludi
w Kyrene, oraz liczne przykłady lampek dekorowanych potyczkami gladiatorów znalezionych w Berenike, Kyrene i Ptolemais. Wraz z kontekstem architektonicznym
w postaci amfiteatrów w Kyrene i Ptolemais, sformułować można ogólniejsze wnioski na temat społeczno-kulturowych uwarunkowań, które miały wpływ na zwiększone zapotrzebowanie w greckich miastach Pentapolis na ten – mierzony skalą popularności lampek – specyficzny nośnik romanizacji, jakim we wschodnich prowincjach Cesarstwa stały się walki gladiatorów.

Στο πλαίσιο της πανελλαδικής δράσης «Περιβάλλον και Πολιτισμός 2016 - Παντέχνου πυρός σέλας – Λαμπερές ιστορίες φωτιάς» της Γενικής Διεύθυνσης Αρχαιοτήτων και Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού και Αθλητισμού, η Εφορεία Αρχαιοτήτων Ανατολικής Αττικής στο Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Μαραθώνα πραγματοποίησε σειρά εκδηλώσεων υπό τον τίτλο «Οι λύχνοι της Ίσιδας», με δράσεις εκπαιδευτικού περιεχομένου που σχεδιάστηκαν για μαθητές της πρωτοβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης και ειδική θεματική ξενάγηση για οικογένειες και ενήλικες. Με κύριο στόχο την ανάδειξη του πολιτιστικού αποθέματος της περιοχής παρουσιάστηκε, για πρώτη φορά στο ευρύ κοινό, μια ιδιαίτερη ομάδα "αθέατων" ευρημάτων που φυλάσσονται στις αποθήκες του μουσείου. Πρόκειται για πήλινους λύχνους ιδιαίτερα μεγάλου μεγέθους που κατασκευάστηκαν σε μήτρα πιθανότατα από κορινθιακά εργαστήρια και φέρουν στο δίσκο ανάγλυφες παραστάσεις προτομών Ίσιδος και Σαράπιδος. Οι λύχνοι αποτέλεσαν λατρευτικά αφιερώματα στο ιερό του Κανώβου που ιδρύθηκε περί τα μέσα του 2ου αι. μ.Χ. στο Μικρό Έλος του Μαραθώνα από τον σοφιστή και ισχυρό άνδρα της εποχής, Ηρώδη Αττικό.

Im Zuge der sukzessiven Eroberung Griechenlands durch die Römer seit dem 2. Jh. v. Chr. wurden die hellenistischen Königreiche und Polisbünde in römische Provinzen umgewandelt, wodurch sich massive Veränderungen in allen Lebensbereichen der Bevölkerung ergaben. Vor diesem Hintergrund ist die Landschaft Akarnanien in Westgriechenland ein vielversprechendes Untersuchungsgebiet. Es befindet sich in der Nähe von Actium, wo nach der Schlacht zwischen Octavianus und Antonius im Jahre 31 v. Chr. laut historischer Überlieferung tiefgreifende regionale Umstrukturierungen stattfan­den. Deshalb befasst sich das Promotionsprojekt mit den römerzeitlichen Funden dieser Region.
Als Forschungsgrundlage dient die Aufarbeitung archäologischen Materials. Dabei werden die römerzeitlichen Funde (1. Jh. v. Chr. bis 4. Jh. n. Chr.) mehrerer Projekte aus Akarnanien in Westgriechenland systematisch aufgearbeitet und der archäologischen Forschung zugänglich ge­macht. Die weiterführenden Fragen der Dissertation fokussieren einen Epochenübergang (von hellenistischer zu römischer Zeit), der unmittelbar mit einem historisch überlieferten Systemwechsel (auf politischer, administrativer, ökonomischer, sozialer etc. Ebene) verbunden werden kann.
Die Kernfrage der Dissertation ist, inwiefern sich dieser Systemwechsel in der materiellen Kultur der Region niederschlägt. Der Schwerpunkt der Analyse liegt, im Gegensatz zu anderen Arbeiten dieser Art, in der Diagnose ökonomischer Wirkungsmechanismen in ihren Bezügen zu Gesellschaft und naturäumlich bedingter Ressourcen. Diese Fragestellung basiert auf der Prä­misse, dass sich antike Wirtschaftssysteme über ihre materiellen und geistigen Hinterlassenschaften, also die überlieferten Produkte und Texte, rekonstruieren lassen. Da Menge, Funktion und Gestaltung der Produkte an die jeweiligen Ansprüche und Bedürfnisse einer Gesellschaft gebunden sind, sind sie orts-, zeit- und gesellschaftsspezifisch verankert. Somit lassen sich in der Erforschung ökonomischer Wirkungsmechanismen mit den Artefakten als unmittelbare Informationsträger sowohl die Produktion (Materialverwendung, angewandte Technik, Gestaltung etc.), als auch, im Kontext, die Konsumption (Bedarf, Funktion, Verwendung etc.) beschreiben. In Kontinuität und Wandel bestimmter technischer und ökonomischer Artefaktmerkmale wird evident, welche Formen lokalen Wirtschaftens auch nach dem Systemwechsel weiter praktiziert und welche aufgegeben wurden.
Diese Ergebnisse werden dann anhand der überlieferten Schriftquellen ergänzt und in einen gesamthistorischen Zusammenhang gestellt. Hierbei werden zum einen unsere bisherigen historischen Annahmen anhand archäologischer Quellen überprüft, zum anderen sollen die bislang in der wirtschaftshistorischen Forschung verwendeten ökonomischen Modelle kritisch analysiert werden. Neben dem soziokulturellen Kontext stehen dem Antragsteller zudem die Ergebnisse geowissenschaftlicher und archäo-botanischer Vorarbeiten zur Verfügung, die in die Untersuchung miteinbezogen werden. So kann geklärt werden, welche Wirkung die naturräumlichen Gegebenheiten auf die lokale Ökonomie hatten.

During the Polish excavations in Ptolemais (Libya), a unique terracotta lamp top of the Cretan Ivy Leaf type was found. It is one of only few known specimens of that kind found on the site. The article provides a brief discussion on the Cretan influences seen in the lychnological material found in Ptolemais. It also draws attention to the problem of studying the relations between the two parts of the Roman province Crete and Cyrenaica.

Article provides archaeological context for gladiators in Cyrenaica. Terracotta lamps, amphitheatres in Cyrene and Ptolemais, gladiatorial stelae found in the last of mentioned cities, provide a base for general conclusion about social and cultural conditions that made Greek cities of Pentapolis want this particular carrier of Romanization that munera gladiatoria were.

This paper explores the terracotta lamps of the Gamos workshop found in two regions of the ancient world: Crete and Cyrenaica. Although both lands, for a long time were conjoined into one roman province (67 BC – 297 AD), studies on trade and functioning of both regions have traditionally been conducted separately (except for the problem of money circulation). The local production of terracotta lamps provides insight into trade patterns between Crete and Cyrenaica and is probably the only evidence proving very close relations between both parts of the province. In 1974 Luciana Mercando (working on the material from Heraclion Museum, Crete) and in 1985 Donald Bailey (examining lamps from excavations in Berenice, Libya) published their catalogues, which included lamps signed ΓΑΜΟΥ. Both scholars attributed the Gamos workshop to local production (dated around 2nd century AD) – Luciana Mercando to Crete and Donald Bailey to Cyrenaica. Their assumptions were based on clay characteristics. The discrepancy of opinions can easily be explained since even today neither in Crete nor in Cyrenaica has any workshop surely attributed to Gamos been found. Since that time, new discoveries of lamps have been made, and the dispute around the provenience of Gamos workshop is still ongoing. The purpose of this paper is to present the repertoire of forms and iconography used in the group of lamps attributed to Gamos found both on Crete and in Cyrenaica. Another aspect of this study is to compare the lamps of Gamos workshop with the examples of other local lamps produced between 1st – ca. mid-3rd century AD. The examined material includes numerous unpublished lamps of Polish excavations in Ptolemais, Libya conducted in years 2001 – 2010.

In this article the author presents the analysis of two marble mortars noted during the cataloging activity of the archaeological material preserved at the Antonianum Pontifical University on behalf of the Archaeological Superintendence of Rome. The features of the two artifacts are interesting because they let a reflection about this category of objects, their dating and types, lacking of specific studies, their connections with the production of marble hanging chandeliers and terracotta lamps.

This paper explores the figure-decorated lamps found at Ptolemais, Cyrenaica (modern Libya). The interpretation of the artefacts juxtaposed with the lamps found at other sites in Cyrenaica let us formulate the types and decorative schemes popular in local manufacturing. Moreover, further conclusions based on the analysis of ceramics, made it possible to define the trade model between Cyrenaica and other regions over the period of 1st – mid-3rd century AD. The purpose of my paper was to present the possible routes of trade goods reaching Cyrenaica, including the lamps, irrespective of their provenience. My analyses let me determine that the import of goods from the West took place via the ports of Tripolitania, whereas from the East – via Crete.

W trakcie badań wykopaliskowych w Ptolemais – jednym z głównych miast portowych libijskiej Pentapolis, pozyskano grupę kilkudziesięciu fragmentów lampek terakotowych posiadających dysk zdobiony dekoracją figuralną. Badany zbiór zabytków, datowany na okres od I w. n.e.-poł. III w. n.e., reprezentuje zarówno wyroby importowane do Cyrenajki, jak i przykłady produkcji lokalnej.
Interpretacja lampek pozyskanych przez misje włoską i amerykańską, a także niepublikowane w znacznej mierze znaleziska misji Instytutu Archeologii UW w Ptolemais, wsparta znaleziskami z pozostałych stanowisk w Cyrenajce, pozwoliła na wyodrębnienie popularnych dla lokalnej produkcji typów oraz dekorujących je schematów ikonograficznych. Prezentowane wyniki badań są pierwszą
próbą usystematyzowania wszystkich znanych dotychczas lampek z dekoracją figuralną znalezionych w Cyrenajce. Wśród nich na szczególną uwagę zasługują przykłady zdobione wizerunkami pary walczących gladiatorów, dla których analogie – publikowane w wielu katalogach lychnologicznych –nie posiadają dotychczas zdefiniowanej proweniencji warsztatowej. Na podstawie obserwacji materiału z Ptolemais oraz pozostałych stanowisk libijskiej Pentapolis, istnieją mocne przesłanki
pozwalające przypisać ten typ lampek do warsztatów działających na terenie prowincji Creta et Cyrene

Badania Polskiej Misji Archeologicznej Instytutu Archeologii Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego na terenie Ptolemais – antycznego miasta północnoafrykańskiej prowincji Cyrenajki (obecna Libia), dostarczyły szeregu odkryć pozwalających na dokładniejsze datowanie lokalnie produkowanych lampek terakotowych. Wśród licznych zabytków ceramicznych i monetarnych znalezionych w kolektorze ściekowym przylegającym do ściany tzw. Domu Leukaktiosa (Willi z Widokiem), znajdowała się lampka terakotowa z wizerunkiem centaura rzucającego głazem. Analogiczne przedstawienie, określane, jako wytwór produkcji lokalnej z początku III w. znajduje się w materiale pochodzącym z Berenike (Sidi Khrebish).
Pierwsza część referatu skupia się na analizie typologicznej i ikonograficznej lampki
z centaurem oraz umieszczeniu jej wśród popularnych motywów zdobniczych panujących wśród tego typu zabytków na terenie Cyrenajki w II poł. II w. i I poł. III w. Kolejnym problemem jest podjęcie próby dokładnego datowania lampki na podstawie zamkniętego kontekstu archeologicznego, w którym się znajdowała. Obecność najpóźniejszej monety – dupondiusa Kommodusa z lat 187-188 – stanowi idealny terminus ante quem dla znajdujących się w kolektorze zabytków. Biorąc pod uwagę najnowsze obserwacje i badania dotyczące obiegu monetarnego w Cyrenajce założenie ulega jednak całkowitej zmianie. Ustalenie chronologii dla lampki z centaurem, przy pomocy numizmatów, ukazane zostanie, jako case study do badań nad datowaniem zabytków przy pomocy numizmatyki, w miastach libijskiej Pentapolis pod koniec II w. i w I poł. III w.

The most prominent time in the local production of standard, round, Roman type lamps in Cyrenaica fell to the period between early 2nd – mid. 3rd century AD. During that time most of the lamps made in the cities of Libyan Pentapolis were influenced by Greek – especially Cretan craftsmanship. Taking into consideration the geographic isolation of the region – one can say that, when it comes to lamps, Cyrenaica was a Greek island on the Eastern North African coast.
