Thailand Social History

G. William Skinner’s doctoral research on the Chinese community in Thailand culminated in his publication of Chinese Society in Thailand: An Analytical History (1957) and Leadership and Power in the Chinese Community of Thailand (1958). These works have long been recognized as foundational studies not only about the Chinese in Thailand but also about Thai society more generally as he viewed the Chinese in Thailand as a segment (or segments) of Thai society and not as an alien community with much greater attachment to China than to Thailand. In particular, his work was pioneering in providing an analysis of class structure in Thailand. In this paper is I not only acknowledge my debt to him as a mentor, but also seek to show that subsequent studies of class in Thailand should begin with his work.

บทคัดย่อ

บทความนี้ศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ทางเศรษฐกิจและการเมืองระหว่างสยามกับตะวันตก ที่เปลี่ยนไปจากยุครัฐจารีตสู่ยุคอาณานิคมและรัฐสมัยใหม่ โดยความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างสองฝ่ายที่เพิ่มขึ้นในยุคอาณานิคมได้สร้างอัตลักษณ์ “ศิวิไลซ์” ในฐานะที่เป็นการควบคุมตนเองของชาวสยามอย่างไร

จากการศึกษาผ่านทฤษฎีสังคมวิทยาเชิงกระบวนการ พบว่า ในยุคอาณานิคม ชนชั้นนำสยามรับแรงกดดันจากชาวตะวันตกจนต้องปรับตัวเข้าสู่การควบคุมตนเองไม่ให้ใช้ความรุนแรงเกินพรมแดนรัฐ และไม่ใช้ความรุนแรงต่อคนในบังคับของเจ้าอาณานิคม นอกจากนี้ การค้า “เสรี” ส่งผลให้ชนชั้นนำสยามสัมพันธ์กับสามัญชนผู้เข้าสู่เศรษฐกิจแบบเงินตราผ่านการเก็บภาษี แม้ว่ารัฐสยามสมัยใหม่พยายามสร้างการควบคุมตนเอง ผ่านการสนับสนุนการศึกษาและกีฬาสมัยใหม่ให้แก่สามัญชน แต่การต่อต้านยังคงพบได้ทั่วไป

In 1624, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) set up a trading post at a fort built on a sandbank extending out from the west coast of Taiwan (Formosa). As a new supplier in the Japanese market, the VOC attempted to import deerskins from Southeast Asian kingdoms. Unlike those imported from Siam, deerskins brought from the aborigines in Taiwan were exempted from official trade barriers between Siam and Japan. The VOC wasted no time trying to take over from the Chinese middlemen deerskin trade with the aborigines in Taiwan and compete with Japanese junk traders who held a Shogunal pass to visit Taiwan. Although deerskins accounted for an insignificant percentage of the total Sino-Japanese trade volume, their trade became a token of legitimacy for the Dutch’s sole control over the Tayouan harbor.  The competition between Dutch and Japanese traders soon spiraled out of control and led to a violent conflict in 1628. All VOC businesses in Japan were suspended until 1633, when the Dutch were preferred to the Iberians by the Japanese Shogun because they were Protestant and not prone to proselytize their religion. The following year, the Japanese Shogunal court implemented a total exclusion policy forbidding Japanese to travel abroad.
    Deerskin exports from Siam had been in the firm grip of the Japanese community there until their leader, Yamada Nagamasa, became embroiled in the political strife following the death of King Songt’am in 1628. This political turmoil stalled Siamese deerskin exports, leaving a vacuum for Taiwanese deerskins to fill. From 1628 to 1632, the VOC authorities in Taiwan, with no access to the Japanese market, allowed the Chinese in Japan to engage in deerskin trade. Gradually, the profits made from Taiwanese deerskin exports were comparable to those from Siam. When the exclusion policy took effect in 1634 and the VOC trade with Japan resumed, the Siamese deerskin exports never recovered their previous level. Seeing an opportunity, the VOC determined to expand its Taiwanese deerskin exports. It launched a series of expeditions to aboriginal villages on the northern frontier to open deer hunting-grounds to Chinese hunters. The Siamese deerskin exports eventually stabilized in the early 1640s and the impetus of the VOC expansion slackened off accordingly. Around 1645, a new system to collect deerskins was established by the VOC authorities. This so-called “village-lease” system guaranteed keeping the Chinese-Aborigine contact to a minimum, while still providing the VOC with a certain amount of deerskins at a fixed price. Tracing the history of deerskin trade initiated by the VOC in Taiwan, the author argues that it served three purposes: to supplement Siamese deerskins, to establish the legitimacy of VOC’s control over Tayouan harbor, and to have exclusive access to the aborigines and all their goods.

Buddhist encounters: A touch of Zen in Thai Buddhism - Modernity has forced Thai Buddhism into rethinking its apologetics regarding first cosmology and rebirth, and then social and political engagement. This has usually been done by going back to the Theravāda tradition, but has failed whenever the renewal claimed to be achieved through setting up a sectarian and exclusive group. Buddhadasa Bhikkhu (1906-1992) has suggested a modernist apologetic renewal inspired by Zen which called into question traditional Theravāda Buddhist beliefs and practices without attempting to create a new sectarian group. He has been criticised either in the name of Theravāda orthodoxy or because he has been allegedly ineffective. The complexity of encounters between the different Buddhist traditions should lead historians to evaluate the past with the greatest caution.

Conclusion

Currently, there are a great deal of movies, series and music videos that expressively show homosexual contents. However, there are not so many studies in semiotic terms with the meaning of the movies with homosexual content or not so many performers who play a role in such media. Objectives of this research are to study the content and message of movies with homosexual matters through the Movie " Love of Siam " which consists of creative theoretical concepts, semiology and mythology. Furthermore, the concepts about Queer matter are the framework of study by analyzing the content, semiotic terms in movie and in-depth interview to study and accumulate the information. The result was found that the semiotic contents inserted by the director in such movie reflected love in various dimensions available in Thai society including self-love, family love, friendship or even love of homosexual people. The perspectives and contents through semiotic terms and mythological interpretation made " Love of Siam " the movie with homosexual contents that was substantially accepted in Thai Society. In this note I call attention to some evidence in the indigenous literature of the people of the Khorat Plateau that might throw some additional light on the ancient towns and cities known archaeologically. While I consider some specific evidence from two legends from the region, I do so only to indicate what information might be derived from legendary sources rather than to present the distillation of a long period of research. I conclude this note with a few suggestions regarding the possible interpretation of the evidence on the ancient sites of northeastern Thailand.

The Reverend Dan Beach Bradly lived almost 38 years in Siam, from 1835 till 1873. Dis diaries filled 25 volumes, that were put on microfilm by the Oberlin College Library in the United States. These reels of film form a rich source for the history of Thailand. This note was published in 1982, but is still relevant for the student of 19th-century Thai history.

Chanthaburi has a rich history. After mentioning some Thai and English sources, in this paper a number of French documents are introduced. Information is presented pertaining to the economic life, the make-up of the population, the efficacy of provincial rulers and contacts with the outside world.

Chanthaburi is a port situated between Siam and Cambodia. In the 18th century Catholic missionaries found out that it was a place where the power of Ayutthaya was relatively weak.In the late 18th century the Catholic community grew and felt relatively free.In the first half of the 19th century this was to change dramatically.

In May of 2014, the Chief Commander of the Royal Thai Army, Prayuth Chan-o-cha, executed a coup to depose former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and the governing Pheu Thai Party.  Shortly thereafter, the military junta enacted interim constitutional law, suspending the 2007 Constitution to sanction the authority of Prayuth’s National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO). This paper deals with the fallout of the 23rd attempt at re-writing the Thai constitution in less than two centuries, and how it has affected Thailand's sense of national identity, including both the Buddhist majority and Muslim minority. This paper also investigates the nuanced impact that Western tourism has had on a nation that was never colonized, and how that has changed the economic makeup of the country and foreign policy objectives of the new government.
