This paper addresses the debate on the place of origin of Upper Guinea Portuguese Creole, spoken in Guinea-Bissau, in Casamance (Senegal) and on the Cape Verde Islands. There is much unsettled debate as to whether the proto-variety emerged on the continent and from there spread to the islands, or vice-versa. In this paper, I underpin the hypothesis that the proto-variety emerged on the islands, on Santiago to be precise. I provide both historical and linguistic evidence. First, a historical framework is presented that accounts for the linguistic transfer from Santiago to Cacheu. Secondly, Parkvall’s (2000) lexical evidence in favor of a Santiago birth will be analyzed and corroborated. Thirdly, a phonological trait that separates the continental variety from the insular variety is highlighted and shown to favor a Santiago origin scenario. Finally, lexical and phonological features typical of 15th–16th century Portuguese shared by the continental and the insular varieties are combined with historical data to further strengthen the Santiago birth hypothesis.

Este artigo pretende mostrar até que ponto a génese e a vida do idioma caboverdiano estão ligadas ao fenómeno da globalização. Numa primeira parte, mostra-se, com base em argumentos lexicais, morfológicos e semânticos que o crioulo de Cabo Verde pode legitimamente ser considerado como uma língua afro-europeia, ou seja, fruto do encontro das culturas de dois continentes. Na segunda parte, examina-se a dinâmica actual da língua caboverdiana na República de Cabo Verde, assim como nas diversas comunidades da diáspora, espalhadas por três continentes (África, América e Europa). Em conclusão, salienta-se que o futuro e a sobrevivência do crioulo do Arquipélago dependerão sempre das relações que Cabo Verde souber manter com o mundo fora.
