moreIl Raval, già noto per aver incluso nei suoi confini meridionali la storica Chinatown di Barcellona, non è soltanto uno dei quartieri-simbolo della metropoli catalana ma, in una dimensione globale, rappresenta un vero e proprio laboratorio di "igiene sociale". Si tratta, a ben vedere, di un luogo capace di rappresentare i peggiori incubi delle classi dirigenti e, di conseguenza, anche tutte le politiche che, nel corso di un secolo, le stesse classi dirigenti hanno scelto di portare avanti per superare una situazione di volta in volta definita come «pericolosa», «amorale» e «degradata». A causa del sovraffollamento, della povertà e di attività economiche stigmatizzate come la prostituzione, in effetti, il Raval si è sempre configurato come spazio altro rispetto ai canoni morali della buona borghesia di Barcellona anche grazie alla conflittualità politica e sociale che non ha mai mancato di animare il quartiere, contribuendo a renderlo oggetto di una permanente condanna sociale nonché territorio perennemente esposto alle mire speculative del capitale finanziario. Questa attitudine si è manifestata nella contemporaneità con rinnovata virulenza, salutando l'epoca di una vera e propria colonizzazione urbana del Raval dove, per facilitare lo sfruttamento, è stato necessario espellere una popolazione evidentemente incompatibile con le caratteristiche del quartiere-vetrina pensato da palazzinari avidi e urbanisti compiacenti. Eppure, come spiega bene Miquel Fernández, il Raval non è un quartiere per ricchi. E così chi credeva di poter fare soldi facili sulla pelle degli storici abitanti del quartiere ha dovuto fare i conti con strategie di resistenza tanto efficaci quanto inaspettate.
