This study surveys the introduction of astrology into East Asia with a primary focus on the Buddhist experience of Indian and Iranian astrology during the eighth and ninth centuries. It is argued that prior to the introduction of Esoteric Buddhism during the 8th century, the Chinese sangha had no pressing need to observe astrology. However, following the rising popularity of Tantric rituals, which require proper timing according to non-Chinese astrological conventions, Chinese Buddhism took a deep interest in astrology. This in turn prompted a wider interest in astrology among Chinese elites, encouraging the translation of more foreign works on astrology, even outside of a Buddhist context. It is shown that around the year 800 there was a shift from Indian to Iranian sources of astrology, most likely as a result of ethnic Iranians working at court. Iranian astrology, which included a rich system of horoscopy rooted in the earlier Hellenistic tradition, prompted a booming popular interest in astrology. Buddhists subsequently took up practice of horoscopy for themselves. Chinese Buddhist astrology was then exported to neighboring countries, most notably Japan where it influenced medieval religious and court cultures.

Grant Morrison is one of the world’s most acclaimed comic writers, known for both metafictional stylistic experiments and his very public penchant for a comparably postmodernist form of occult bricolage commonly called chaos magic. Morrison’s practical and theoretical interests in gnosticism, tantra, etc. inform his output in overt ways and exemplify an influential contemporary approach to yogic traditions in commercial comics. This chapter explores the treatment of Tibetan Dzogchen practice in Morrison’s late 2000s work on Batman, where he applies esoteric Buddhist meditation techniques to the perennial superhero theme of secret, split identities. As Marc Singer (2012) has observed, Morrison tackled similar motifs a decade earlier in The Invisibles, but where that opus generally celebrated the disruptive potential of the titular anarchist collective’s fragmented selves, here Batman’s fractured psyche forms the story’s central conflict. Transformational ego-transcendence through a solitary ‘dark retreat’ ritual akin to sensory deprivation becomes his means for survival, but even as the details of the rites draw on Buddhist traditions, the way Morrison depicts the experience and deploys the theme of isolation throughout can be read as emblematic of an individualized initiatory ordeal rooted more in the ceremonial magic of Aleister Crowley than in Tibetan Vajrayana.

Since the 1960’s, Vajrayāna has experienced a meteoric rise in popularity, both in Western and modern Asian countries. This closely parallels the logarithmic growth in holistic, alternative and bioenergy medicine in the West during this same period. These two approaches to human betterment, healing and transformation share many areas of mutual concern. Yet in spite of many Vajrayāna rituals focusing on health, vitality and longevity, there has been surprisingly little dialogue with alternative medicine. There is much to be gained by looking at their common ground, particularly how the extensive research into bioenergetic healing modalities impacts our understanding of Vajrayāna. Two core components of Vajrayāna as he basis of a meaningful exchange: creative visualization vs. generative stage (bskyed rim) and sound therapy in relation to mantra recitation (sngags). For each we discuss their differing goals, methodology and the accumulation of scientific evidence and clinical experience from a Western perspective. We can then draw conclusions about what they can learn from each other, theoretically and practically. Through such mutual interchange, Vajrayāna may become much more understandable and accessible for millions worldwide.

This study investigates the sources of Japanese Buddhist astrology and astral magic while also examining their later developments, arguing that a significant amount of such arts actually originated in the Near East. Two types of Buddhist astrology are identified: “Mikkyō Astrology,” which was primarily used to determine auspicious days for rituals in Shingon and Tendai, and Sukuyōdō, the sole Japanese tradition to practice horoscopy. The role of astral magic within these Buddhist traditions is furthermore examined, with a particular focus on the Japanese reception of icons that in large part originated from Iranian sources that had been earlier received in Tang China. Finally, this study attempts to demonstrate the larger cultural significance of Buddhist astrology in medieval Japanese society.

Timeless awareness is the essence of Dzogchen. Time experienced within timeless awareness is also an expression of the essence of Dzogchen. Dzogchen is an ancient form of Tibetan mystic humanism. Dzogchen makes the essential distinction between mind and awareness. A person can be located in mind alone and locked in time. As a person shifts from being located in mind alone (mindfulness) and goes beyond mind alone (mindfulness), one becomes aware of their own awareness. As we focus our awareness on our own innermost awareness, vast dimensions of awareness begin to open and self-reveal its nature to us. Awareness is a multidimensional experience and this awareness is infinite in its horizons. The innate qualities of awareness are spaciousness or openness or emptiness. Another quality of our awareness is luminous radiance and still another is awareness as energy. Awareness is alive and is both vast stillness and unceasing movement. The Union of Mind and Awareness When a person is able to experience the union of their mind and their awareness, then the person has a simultaneous experience of being in time and in timeless awareness. The mind is the place of thinking, feeling, sensation, memory and imagination and the mind is the mode of knowing singularity and difference in the world. This is the realm of ordinary knowingness and this is the realm of duality. Our mind is the realm of time. This time bound knowing is the knowing of you and I, us and them, this or that in time and place.

In the summer of 2013 at the Tibetan Center in Poolesville, Maryland the great Lama YangThang Rinpoche gave instruction on the practice of the great compassion, or as he described the practice, as being the practice of Absolute Compassion. The instruction was to extend the light of awareness into the world and into the cosmos. Extending the light of awareness into the present moment of a person, extending the light of awareness into the past time of the person and extending the light of awareness into the future time of the person. This truly is the great practice of the great compassion and everyone can practice this extension of the light of awareness. This very proactive praxis brings forth the light within us and fills us with the light of the field of awareness. It is great to practice this vast practice. Of course it takes a boldness of intention and passion of heart. Extending the light of our innermost awareness into the present of those we love, and into the past of those we love, and then extending the light into their future of those we love is self-liberating. The light of awareness illuminates experience, metabolizes experience, opens us into un-bound awareness, undoes fixated-ness, and brings forth luminous intensity. The light of awareness is pure potentiality. The same practice can be used with those whom we hate or dislike or whom disgust us. This practice of extending the light of awareness deepens our own experience of becoming aware of awareness. As we practice extending the light of awareness, awareness itself completely opens up for us and deepens our experience in depth and breath. La tesis explora etnográficamente el proceso de adaptación que viene dándose hace algunas décadas del budismo tibetano al contexto bonaerense y, especialmente, dentro de la comunidad del centro de práctica y enseñanza budista tibetano, el Kagyu Tekchen Chöling.
Realizamos un breve recorrido histórico a modo de introducción al budismo, sus escuelas y el proceso de globalización de esta tradición a partir del cual se hizo presente en la diversidad religiosa argentina. Mostramos algunas de las ideas más recurrentes en el centro de Dharma, las cuales dan forma a lo que presentamos como "comunidad de habla o de lenguaje", ordenadas en tres entradas de un Glosario Conceptual. Realizamos también una descripción etnográfica del centro de Dharma como contexto de práctica del "entrenamiento espiritual budista" en vías de alcanzar una transformación de sí a partir del conocimiento anclado en la experiencia que, en su grado más alto de compromiso, supone un modo de vida: el camino del bodhisattva. El objetivo de transformación fue problematizado a partir de la idea de trabajo de sí y, para eso, tuvimos en cuenta la inscripción de dicho entrenamiento en el linaje Kagyu del budismo tibetano y el rol de los lamas dentro del centro. Desarrollamos la idea de que las prácticas del dar se convierten en modos de relación enraizados en la moral budista y, a partir de una reflexión sobre otra práctica central, la meditación analítica, revisamos la categoría de dividuo desde el debate individuo, dividuo, porosidad.
Para ello, problematizamos antropológicamente la traducción y la articulación con sentidos locales como una vía para abordar el fenómeno de la adaptación del budismo tibetano al contexto bonaerense y estudiamos la transformación que los argentinos conversos al budismo sin antepasados orientales realizan en sus modos de experimentarse a sí mismos, su relación con otros seres y su relación con lo existente.
