Ectopic thyroid tissue (ETT) is an uncommon entity that may be found anywhere along the line of the obliterated thyroglossal duct, usually from the tongue to the diaphragm. We performed a retrospective analysis of patients undergoing surgical treatment for thyroid disease between January 2000 and December 2013, seeking for ETT All patients with prior neck surgery or trauma were excluded. The clinic-pathologic features, prevalence and diagnosis of the lesions were collected and analyzed. Out of 3092 included patients, 28 ETT were identified (0.9%). The anatomical site of ETT was as follows: lateral cervical in 6 (21.4%), along the thyroglossal duct in 6 (21.4%), mediastinal in 5 (17.9%), lingual in 5 (17.9%), sublingualin 3 (10.7%), and submandibular in 3 (10.7%). Histopathology revealed 27 benign lesions and 1 (3.6%) papillary carcinoma. ETT is found in less than 1% of patients receiving thyroid surgery. Diagnosis of ETT requires clinical imaging. Surgery is a prudent choice due to ...

Object. Chiari Type I malformation (CMI) is a congenital disorder recognized by caudal displacement of the cerebellar tonsils through the foramen magnum and into the cervical canal. Frequently, associated findings include abnormalities of nearby bony and neural elements as well as syringomyelia. Cerebellar tonsillar ectopia is generally considered pathological when greater than 5 mm below the foramen magnum. However, asymptomatic tonsillar ectopia is an increasingly recognized phenomenon, the significance of which is poorly understood.Methods. The authors retrospectively reviewed the records of all brain magnetic resonance (MR) images obtained at our hospital over a 43-month period in an attempt to ascertain the relative prevalence and MR imaging characteristics of asymptomatic CMIs. Of 22,591 patients who underwent MR imaging of the head and cervical spine, 175 were found to have CMIs with tonsillar herniation extending more than 5 mm below the foramen magnum. Of these, 25 (14%) we...

In personal communication we have never seen or heard of hair being detected in the oral cavity. Even Julia Pastrana, the famous "Bearded Lady" of the 1800's, had no record of oral hair, although her entire body was covered with hair. Extensive records of her oral condition, including plaster models of her teeth have been preserved in the Odontological Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons in London city. She suffered from excessive gingival hyperplasia, but apparently no hair existed within the mouth. Some rodents have oral hair as a normal occurrence, but the condition is apparently limited in the animal kingdom. A case of hair occurring naturally in the mouth has been reported only twice previously. A third case of this rare anomaly is reported here. In this case, multiple hairs were found at the gingival sulcus in the labial, buccal, lingual and palatal tooth surfaces in an 11-year-old boy.

A 60-year-old man with left flank pain, fever, and nausea underwent an abdominal ultrasound and showed left hydroureteronephrosis without urinary calculi. Computed tomography urography showed moderate left hydroureteronephrosis and a hypodense paravesical mass of 1.7 cm with mild contrast enhancement just below the ipsilateral ureterovesical junction. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging showed a 48 cc prostate and confirmed a roundish mass, protruding into the bladder, hyperintense on T2-weighted images, hypointense on T1-weighted images, and with mild inhomogeneous contrast enhancement. Cystoscopy with cold cup biopsy was carried out. Histologic analysis revealed the presence of ectopic prostatic tissue with no evidence of malignancy.

This study aims to investigate the possible correlations between the heterotopic gastric mucosa (HGM) islets in the cervical esophagus and laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). Between May 2010 and April 2011, 45 patients (36 females, 9 males; mean age 39.8±14.1 years; range 18 to 72 years) who had reflux symptom index (RSI) >10 and reflux finding score (RFS) >7 were included. The study group consisted of 21 patients who were diagnosed with HGM islets in the cervical esophagus, while control group consisted of 24 patients without any HGM islets assessed by upper gastrointestinal system endoscopy. Esophagus manometric examination and dual-channel 24-hour pH monitoring were performed on all patients. Pretreatment mean RSI and RFS were 25.6±3.5 and 15.1±3.4 in group 1, while it was found to be 21.1±4.4 and 11.9±2.6 in group 2 (p=0.001, p=0.001). A total of 29.7% of patients who underwent pH monitoring had distal reflux, whereas 43.2% of them had proximal reflux. In group 1, distal refl...

OBJECTIVE To elucidate the potential mechanisms involved in the physiopathology of endometriosis. We analyzed the differential gene expression profiles of eutopic and ectopic tissues from women with endometriosis. DESIGN Prospective laboratory study. SETTING University hospital. PATIENT(S) Seventeen patients in whom endometriosis was diagnosed and 11 healthy fertile women. INTERVENTION(S) Endometrial biopsy specimens from the endometrium of healthy women without endometriosis and from the eutopic and ectopic endometrium tissues of patients with endometriosis were obtained in the early proliferative phase of the menstrual cycle. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) Six paired samples of eutopic and ectopic tissue were analyzed by subtractive hybridization. To evaluate the expression of genes found by rapid subtraction hybridization methods, we measured CTGF, SPARC, MYC, MMP, and IGFBP1 genes by real-time polymerase chain reaction in all samples. RESULT(S) This study identified 291 deregulated gen...

The chorio-allantoic grafts analysed were prepared from avian proventricular endoderm combined with its own or pancreatic mesenchyme and from re-associated pancreatic layers. Intestine developed ectopically in some grafts: in these, endocrine cells typical of intestine differentiated irrespective of the source of the endoderm or mesenchyme. In addition, endocrine cells inappropriate for the surrounding histology were detected in small numbers in grafts of all categories. Clearly it is not the mesenchyme that is responsible but perhaps some aspect of the procedure, which may relate to stressful stimuli thought to provoke intestinal metaplasia. The differentiation of inappropriate cells aids in understanding the occurrence of ectopic endocrine tumours.
