About this audiobook

The New York Times bestselling author of Fat Chance explains the eight pathologies that underlie all chronic disease, documents how processed food has impacted them to ruin our health, economy, and environment over the past 50 years, and proposes an urgent manifesto and strategy to cure both us and the planet.

Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatric neuroendocrinologist who has long been on the cutting edge of medicine and science, challenges our current healthcare paradigm which has gone off the rails under the influence of Big Food, Big Pharma, and Big Government.

You can’t solve a problem if you don’t know what the problem is. One of Lustig’s singular gifts as a communicator is his ability to “connect the dots” for the general reader, in order to unpack the scientific data and concepts behind his arguments, as he tells the “real story of food” and “the story of real food.”

Metabolical weaves the interconnected strands of nutrition, health/disease, medicine, environment, and society into a completely new fabric by proving on a scientific basis a series of iconoclastic revelations, among them:

  • Medicine for chronic disease treats symptoms, not the disease itself
  • You can diagnose your own biochemical profile
  • Chronic diseases are not ""druggable,"" but they are ""foodable""
  • Processed food isn’t just toxic, it’s addictive
  • The war between vegan and keto is a false war—the combatants are on the same side
  • Big Food, Big Pharma, and Big Government are on the other side

Making the case that food is the only lever we have to effect biochemical change to improve our health, Lustig explains what to eat based on two novel criteria: protect the liver, and feed the gut. He insists that if we do not fix our food and change the way we eat, we will continue to court chronic disease, bankrupt healthcare, and threaten the planet. But there is hope: this book explains what’s needed to fix all three.

On so many levels this book makes clear complex biologial proccesses, so a listener can make informed choices. After having had an ulcer and a later a kidney stone removed I was required to give up sugar, including fruit for a month. The first two weeks were difficult. Unexpectedly I lost 5 kilos after six weeks. Something I mostly attribute to sugar consumption previously led to giving me belly fat. I eat a single spoon of honey on my oatmeal in the morning and lots of fruit now. I also indulge in 1-2 small bottles of sweetened coffee a week, but never more. The doctor explains how you need to feed your gut first. Fruit, vegetables and perhaps my bowl of oatmeal do that. Insoluble fiber helps food move through the intestines and creates healthy mucous there. His 2cd rule is protect the liver. This organ is connected to the pancreas, which excretes insulin to digest sugars and leads to fatty liver disease when too much refined sugar is consumed. Another interesting take away is omega 3s are mostly in seafood and reduce inflammation, while cooking oils derived from seeds are high in omega 6 and drive inflammation. Heating olive oil also creates trans-fat, which has been banned, but is easy to create by heating certain cooking oils to where they are burning. Overall I like Dr Lustig's approach. He doesnt make assumptions and continues to question the emperical data and dogma the medical industry has been proferring. They treat the symptoms of disease without discovering the underlying causes, which are related to the proccessed food people are ingesting. 88% of Americans have some sort of metabolical disorder and I am sure I have some issues too. This book points toward remedies which are in the kitchen and not the medicine cabinet.

Persuasive case for the hazard of processed food, and specifically sugar. I wish he had defined "processed food" at the beginning, but it comes in part 4. I'd listen to that first then go back and start at the beginning.

These global mega corporations have “gamed” every aspect relating to any human consumption twisting it to maximize endless profits no matter what the costs to people, families and society , our loss is their $$$ gain! God save the planet!

I’ve been following Dr. Lustig on TouTube for several years and was looking forward to this book. It surpassed my expectations and I’ve recommended it to all my friends. Metabolical should be required reading for the President, the cabinet and all members of Congress, as well as for all medical practitioners. Our health and that of the planet are at stake. I live in Europe and was shocked, during a recent visit to the US, at the ingredients in food at the supermarket. I was also shocked to learn of the chemicals which are used for growing food - things which are banned in Europe. The US has a long way to go to improve the health of its citizens. I hope this excellent book inspires people to continue the fight for safe, sustainable and real food.

Lustig doesn't pull any punches about how what we eat makes us healthy or sick . He calls out the players helping, or more often hampering, to advance real food instead of ultra processed food like substances.

The tone of the book is just right; lots of science to satisfy the curious but Lusting tells a good story and the book is an easy and engrossing read.

Absolutely excellent book. This is a comprehensive analysis of processed foods and their impacts on human health, politics, and the environment (to name a few). All information is backed by science and numerous sources- extremely detailed in many ways.

I have already bought the hard copy of this book and have recommended it to every person I know. I will definitely be coming back to this book to remind myself of all the lies, deceit, marketing, and politics that surround our modern way of eating.

In short, this book has changed my life. Knowing what I know now, there is no way that I’m capable of looking the other way.

    Excellent!!!

As true as it is, to reduce processed food, the book peddles feel good statements about our current diets, so that we don't get offended by real research. All this to keep listening. Weak...

"Metabolical" is a created term a mix between diabolical and metabolic disease. This disease is affecting 88% of the population in the U.S (and I'm sure Canada) with obesity, hypertension, heart disease, fatty liver, diabetes and more. Lustig is an extremely knowledgable pediatric endocrinologist with concerns about diet. This is unusual but shouldn't be! I have read his books before and know his position about sugar, the devil sugar! This books explains from a chemistry point of view, the needs for our bodies for REAL FOOD and not processed food. This book should be read by everyone! It is excellent. He puts a big plug in for fibre to keep the intestinal biome healthy and for low amounts of sugar to keep the liver healthy. He explains it all very, very well. A big BOO!!! to processed foods! Lustig does a good job of explaining the differences of the various diets i.e. keto, low carb, low fat, vegan etc.. He does explain the greed of the food industries in cahoots with the government. Like the opioid crisis and the links between Big Pharma and Government there is much corruption between the Food industry and Government links. He also explains the links and possible corruption between Big Food and the Association for Dietitians and Dental Associations. All quite discouraging.Have you seen the food T.V. ads recently, what is conditioning us to be so unhealthy? Just pick up your Iphone and order a big juicy burger. Don't forget the big gulp of sugar drink and those oh so delicious fries to be delivered to your house. p.17 if you have metabolic syndrome your risk of death goes up 20 fold.

The first 2/3 of the book was good and motivating to eat heathier and give up sugar. Then the author started to get into politics and started giving all of these "facts" about agriculture. It was then that I realized that he didn't have a clue what he was talking about. It makes me question all of the "facts" throughout the book. He needs to stick to just being a doctor.
