About this audiobook

Edgar Award Nominee for Best First Novel

Named a New York Times Best Thriller of 2021

"I devoured this riveting book through a day of travel...My desire to rush to the end clashed with my desire to savor every word. Who would be the last psychopath standing?” — New York Times Book Review

"Fresh, fast-paced and fiendishly clever! If you love watching true crime and wonder about the psychopaths among us, this is the book for you!"
Lisa Gardner, #1 New York Times bestselling author

You should never trust a psychopath. But what if you had no choice?

It would be easy to underestimate Chloe Sevre… She’s a freshman honor student, a legging-wearing hot girl next door, who also happens to be a psychopath. She spends her time on yogalates, frat parties and plotting to kill Will Bachman, a childhood friend who grievously wronged her.

Chloe is one of seven students at her DC-based college who are part of an unusual clinical study of psychopaths—students like herself who lack empathy and can’t comprehend emotions like fear or guilt. The study, led by a renowned psychologist, requires them to wear smart watches that track their moods and movements.

When one of the students in the study is found murdered in the psychology building, a dangerous game of cat and mouse begins, and Chloe goes from hunter to prey. As she races to identify the killer and put her own plan for revenge into action, she’ll be forced to decide if she can trust any of her fellow psychopaths—and everybody knows you should never trust a psychopath.

Don't miss Vera Kurian's chilling upcoming novel, A Step Past Darkness, where a group of six teenagers witness something tragic in an abandoned mine, which comes back to haunt them 20 years later.

A great psychological thriller with many twist and turns. I enjoyed that it took place on a college campus along with the students followed. Thought I solved it, but I was wrong !!! I'd definitely recommend it. GREAT Read !!!

Well written. Well read. Never ending twists and turns. Humor, sex, psychological thriller. What’s not to love. Truly couldn’t wait to get back to the audio and hated to reach the end!

A fun and interesting read. I enjoyed the characters and over-all concept! It was light, not too serious and a perfect break from more intense thrillers.

Honestly, was a good read until the end. So much was left unfinished so I hope this is the first book in a series. The idea is unique and good but solely leaving only 3 stars because of the end which fell flat.

Great book. These characters make Verity seem sane. I alternated between laughing hysterically and being horrified. I hope that doesn't mean I'm a psychopath. I highly recommend it.

It was an ok read. Lost interested in it as the story progressed.

Started out slow to build up the characters. But could you imagine a college program that is specially made for students who has psychopath tendencies? I couldn't imagine but here we are. Overall the book was a easy read a little dragged out for my taste. Towards the end I knew who the suspect was before it ended.

Not sure what was wrong, but the audiobook skipped several times to where I’d miss chunks of the book. I would rewind it and it would still happen at certain spots, so I think there’s a problem with the recording. It also happened at the end and became too much of a hassle to finish the book.

This was dark and honestly, I wouldn't have finished it if it wasn't a book club read. Psychopaths in a scholarship research program are being hunted. But they aren't afraid to do some hunting of their own..

Narrator was pretty ditzy, the story isn't really calling for airhead girly voices
