About this audiobook

From the author of the breakout thriller Every Last Fear, comes Alex Finlay's electrifying next audiobook The Night Shift, about a pair of small-town murders fifteen years apart—and the ties that bind them.

“The night was expected to bring tragedy.” So begins one of the most highly-anticipated thrillers in recent years.

It’s New Year’s Eve 1999. Y2K is expected to end in chaos: planes falling from the sky, elevators plunging to earth, world markets collapsing. A digital apocalypse. None of that happens. But at a Blockbuster Video in New Jersey, four teenagers working late at the store are attacked. Only one inexplicably survives. Police quickly identify a suspect, the boyfriend of one of the victims, who flees and is never seen again.

Fifteen years later, more teenage employees are attacked at an ice cream store in the same town, and again only one makes it out alive.

In the aftermath of the latest crime, three lives intersect: the lone survivor of the Blockbuster massacre who’s forced to relive the horrors of her tragedy; the brother of the fugitive accused, who’s convinced the police have the wrong suspect; and FBI agent Sarah Keller who must delve into the secrets of both nights—stirring up memories of teen love and lies—to uncover the truth about murders on the night shift.

Twisty, poignant, and redemptive, The Night Shift is a story about the legacy of trauma and how the broken can come out on the other side, and it solidifies Finlay as one of the new leading voices in the world of thrillers.

If you can put aside that he wrote a MC as 8 months pregnant with twins still working in the field as an FBI agent then the book was fast paced and twisted.

A nice little mystery that follows three points of view, all of which are enjoyable and well-paced.

    Definitely worth a read.

A good story ..good writing makes you feel the full spectrum of emotions. It will make you laugh, cry, be scared for your life. A good story will make you cast the characters with actors and write letters to Netflix to see the light and bring the book to the big screen and stream it world wide.
A good story makes you go listen to the songs that fit as soundtracks to scenes. ( I recommend Moby : One of These Mornings ft. Patti Labelle. One day all of this may be gone fits all the way through the book but especially at the end.)
The Night Shift is one of those books. The haunting atmosphere of only one girl left alive that permeates chapter by chapter, then the brutal slaying reenacted. I found myself holding my breath ; plot twist after twist. The ending was graphic ,brutal; and Agent Keller I have cast as Poppy Montgomery from Without a Trace. Fearless going head to head in the dark ; that was visceral and heart pounding intense. I believe Alex Finlay loved that show because his killer definitely came from S1 Episode 5 ; the killer in that episode who was possibly one of the most sadistic characters ever written, and Jack Malone was racing against the clock just as our FBI agent Keller was at the end of this book. I would like Agent Kellers character to come back to hunt another killer, or Chris and Ella to come back as people working with the FBI to solve a cold case.
Good characters like theirs you dont want to let go. Definitely in my top three fave thrillers of 2022!

Thus audiobook was so entertaining. I really enjoy it when there are different narrators for each character. It was a twisty outcome but i really enjoyed it.

This has been on my TBR for a while. I'm so glad I finally read this because it was everything you wanted in a thriller. Layers of stories, huge character involvement, and tins of twists and turns. Eighteen years ago, 4 teens were killed in what the town called the Blockbuster murders. On the survivor remained, and she left town and has moved away, not exactly moving on. She receives a call very early one morning telling her a similar murder has happened, and the survivor is asking for her. This will be one that sticks with you and keeps you gasping up until the very end.

I am obviously in the minority but I found the book boring and the narration awful, especially when impersonating the male voices. Also the pacing of the narration and how she would pause in the sentence and then emphasize the next word was odd and distracting. I DNF.

I liked that it was sort of twisty. This is generally the kind of book I like. Brittany Pressley can do no wrong in my eyes. Not sure I would have finished if not for her performance, but I was reasonably okay with my investment of time in the novel.

The idea was good. The execution was awful. Avoid this book. It's overly dramatic and terribly disappointing.

This was terrible from start to finish. Too many POVS and flashbacks and a whole thing about a vlogger that served zero purpose to the story. The conclusion was not satisfying and didn’t make sense. The characters were poorly written, clichéd and fell flat. Do not recommend unfortunately.

I really enjoyed this book and I find I like this author. I only have one little complaint, the internet said that Every Last Fear was the first Sarah Keller book but this story, I have decided, has to be a prequel. Having listened to Every Last Fear first this had me a bit confused because I thought Sarah had the babies in that book and in this story she is pregnant with them. Despite this, I liked it a lot. Lots of great storytelling and I love Sarah and I love her super supportive husband Bob, he is so terrific in how he calls her G-woman and has her back, plus he takes care of the children. I hope Mr. Finlay writes some more with Agent Keller because she is a great role model for women and she has lots of common sense and is a great detective. I enjoyed all the supporting cast of characters and I sort of guessed about halfway in who the killer was but there were enough red herrings along the way to keep me engaged.
