About this audiobook
A heart-pounding novel of unspeakable crimes and unforgivable sins from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Sound of Rain.
Homicide detective Nicole Foster has finally balanced an unsteady life and is anxious for a second chance. There’s no better place to start over than at the beginning—back at her childhood home on the Washington coast, where’s she raising her niece and keeping an eye on her increasingly fragile father. But Nicole’s past is never truly behind her—not when a disturbing new case stirs dark memories of the haunting investigation that shattered her career.
In the middle of the hottest August in a century, a toddler is found dead inside a parked car. Her father says he forgot her. It’s an unthinkable crime. And for Nicole, it’s made all the more unbearable by her own suffocating secrets—those shared by an old rival who has reappeared from the shadows and is pushing Nicole to the edge once again.
Now, wherever the truth lies, solving this case and avenging an unforgivable death is the most important move in Nicole’s career. But to see it through to the end, how far is she willing to go? And what is she prepared to risk this time?

What our readers think
Readers find this title to be a captivating and action-packed story with unexpected twists. The well-developed characters and easy-to-follow plot make it an enjoyable read. While some reviewers felt that certain aspects could have been explained better and expanded upon, overall, the book is recommended and praised for its happy ending and great narration. It is considered a good and quick read, with the potential for future stories in the series. Wicked good and worth reading.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The book is okay. It would have been better if I wasn’t so forced to be focused on her main character’s gambling problem in every freaking sentence of the book. The narrators lisp didn’t help much at all either. Gregg Olsen is a great author. He just missed this one for me.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Pretty darn good. I quite enjoyed this. Narrator is great.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The story was action packed and captivating from beginning to end! I enjoyed the unexpected twists and loved the ending! There were just enough characters, well developed as well. The story was easy to follow. Nice to see good prevail, with a slight tinge of sinister. Thank you for writing this book! Wicked good!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I really liked the story although at times it got way too wordy. The book could have ended several chapters ago. There were two story lines but I feel the one about Nicole and Stacy was a little unexplained. The additional words could have been used to explain why Stacy was the way she was and why was Nicole afraid of her. Worth reading and I recommend it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Riveting story with a “happy ending”! Narrator did a great job! I wish there was a third book in the series?
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Good quick ending to a good story. Thank you much
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5It kept bringing in stories from previous books which was annoying, wish it had just stuck to the main tale. But the main tale was a bit nasty anyway & they went round and round with it. Listened to it all but...
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5It feels a bit short and has one of those starts where action happens right away and then goes back 13 days before the action. It's poor writing for that and it leaves some questions about possible side stories such as the dog back story. It was OK but felt like a missed opportunity to expand upon the main character. This one felt like it was a bit lazy and has turned me off any potential future stories with Nicole.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great book, captivating throughout! Great narration as well! Great read!!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Nicole Foster is back at her job as a detective at the Aberdeen Police Department while she raises her niece, Emma, after her sister Stacy's disappearance. Nicole still struggles with her addiction but has learned to control her urges. The story begins with Nicole and her partner, Carter, investigating a one-year-old's death by being left all day inside a hot car. This part of the book is tough to read as the author skips back and forth from learning more details about this poor baby's death to Nicole's inevitable confrontation with her crazy sister. This second book in the series resolves all the loose ends in the first book and builds suspensefully to a thrilling conclusion. Good entertainment.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I like this author. It has been a while since I have read anything by this author. Thus the reason when I got the chance to read this book I jumped on it without a second thought. While, I have not read the first book in this series, I didn't have issues jumping right into this story. In fact, I liked Nicole. The problem is not her as much as the storyline. The storyline lacked intensity and a strong character emotional connection. The story starts out with a father grieving as he left his child in the car. A sad but all too real situation. Nicole is called out to help on the case. From this point on I was ready for the story to pick up. It didn't but I still held out hope and kept reading. The story moved at a slow pace without a lot of emotion emulating from the characters for me. Overall, this is not a favorite book of mine from this author as I but I will still read more books by this author.
