About this audiobook

A USA TODAY Bestseller | An NPR Best Book of 2024 | A Goodreads Best Thriller of 2024

In this “page-turning suspense novel, shrewd character study, and captivating mystery” (Stephen King) Detective Chelsey Calhoun’s life is turned upside down when she gets the call that Ellie Black, a girl who disappeared years earlier, has resurfaced in the woods of Washington state—but her reappearance leaves Chelsey with more questions than answers.

It’s been twenty years since Detective Chelsey Calhoun’s sister vanished when they were teenagers, and ever since she’s been searching: for signs, for closure, for other missing girls. But happy endings are rare in Chelsey’s line of work.

Then a glimmer: local teenager Ellie Black, who disappeared without a trace two years earlier, has been found alive in the woods of Washington state.

But something is not right with Ellie. She won’t say where she’s been, or who she’s protecting, and it’s up to Chelsey to find the answers. She needs to get to the bottom of what happened to Ellie: for herself, and for the memory of her sister, but mostly for the next girl who could be taken—and who, unlike Ellie, might never return.

The “haunting and evocative” debut thriller from New York Times bestselling author Emiko Jean, The Return of Ellie Black is both a feminist tour de force about the embers of hope that burn in the aftermath of tragedy and a “gripping psychological thriller” (The Seattle Times) that will shock you right up until the final page.

Editor's Note

Thoughtfully twisty…

When teenager Ellie Black suddenly reappears after vanishing two years ago, it’s up to Detective Chelsey Calhoun to find out who took her and why — a challenging task compounded by Ellie’s refusal to talk and Chelsey’s trauma surrounding her own missing sister. Jean (“Mika in Real Life”) pens a thriller with twists and turns in abundance, but even more compellingly, with thoughtful commentary on how society views crimes against women and girls.

A really good story with many likable characters. I really rooted for Chelsea to succeed and I like how her story works out in the end. The writing was very good and you get invested in these girls so easily, praying for them to escape. I hope Emiko Jean writes some more adventures and cases for Chelsea as she is an engaging character.

It was a good book, good narration. It is different than a lot of thrillers. Mentions grief and relevant topics.

I really enjoyed this book! The narrators were great and the story had just captured my interest right off the bat! It had so many interesting twists and turns that were unexpected. I could give it a 5 star, but I reserve that for “BEST books ever.”

Not so much a thriller but a mystery and it was really good! I read along and listened at the same time. I really liked the writing style and thought everything flowed. I also love that the book had different narrators for the POVs! This is a keeper!

The last few chapters had me reevaluating the entrie book. The narrator who did Ellie is amazing, I wish she had done the full book. While it is interesting to see some new POV's, I felt the one off narrations were jarring and left me further agitated at the end when we get no further insights from their characters. The big reveal of who Serendipity is had me ready to trash the entire novel, but I could see why the author felt it may be necessary, even if I don't agree. Overall, some good performances, ideas and writing but definitely not the best suspense book out there. 3/5 ?'s

This was a great mystery novel and it was narrated so well! This is more than a lost and found girl story - it is about sisters, friends, family and how to lay down one story and take up another one.

Unoriginal — trying to preach a message of social justice within the context of a novel. Clunky. The whodunnit part was predictable . Not many characters to chose a villain from.
