Designed by Dr. Russell Wilder of the Mayo Clinic in 1924, the ketogenic diet has been utilized for 92 years as a weight loss diet and a means of controlling certain medical conditions. In this chapter we are going to take a look at the basics of the ketogenic diet to show how it can work for you today.
A Basic Breakdown of the Ketogenic Diet
The basic premise of the ketogenic diet is utilizing specific nutrient rations in order to change the way that your body uses energy. As a low-carb, high-fat diet, the ketogenic plan focuses on reducing the percentage of carbs eaten in order to force the body to break down fats instead.
The Body’s Natural Process of Energy Production
Glucose is the go-to source of energy for the body. When eating a diet that is high in carbohydrates, the body breaks down these carbohydrates in to sugars known as glucose. Glucose is then absorbed through the digestive system, passed on to the liver and then sent in to the circulatory system. When this happens, the blood sugar levels rise and cells within the body feed on this sugar. Throughout this process, the body produces insulin which serves to transform the sugar in the circulatory system in to usable energy. Additionally, insulin helps to store excess glucose that is not eaten up by cells. This glucose is stored in the liver, fat cells and the muscles. However, it is important to note that the body can only store around two days’ worth of glucose at a single time.
Changing the Body’s Natural Process with the Ketogenic Diet
So how does this come in to play in the ketogenic diet? The ketogenic diet focuses on eating a higher percentage of fats, an average percentage of proteins and a low percentage of carbohydrates. This altered ratio of nutrients forces the body to look elsewhere for energy because it provides fewer carbohydrates for the body to break down in to energy. With fewer carbohydrates available to the body, something called ketosis
occurs.
What is Ketosis?
The state of ketosis
is initiated by the body when there is a lack of insulin because of lowered glucose levels and as fewer carbohydrates are being consumed. When this happens, the liver produces acids known as ketones
as it breaks down fat to produce energy in the place of carbohydrates. The term ketosis
actually refers to the presence of higher levels of ketones in the blood.
Isn’t Ketosis Dangerous?
Those of you who watch medical dramas on television or who are familiar with diabetes, might recognize the term ketosis as being related to ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis is what happens when toxic levels of ketones accumulate in the body. This most often occurs in diabetic individuals when ketones accumulate, because the body has a lack of insulin to break down glucose. Ketoacidosis can be fatal. However, ketosis and ketoacidosis are not the same thing. Unlike ketoacidosis, ketosis induced by the ketogenic diet is a controlled process. Carbohydrates are still being supplied to the body, just in a smaller volume.
How Does the Ketogenic Diet Differ From Other Diets?
The ketogenic diet is often compared to other diets like the Atkins diet and the Paleo diet. While both the Atkins and Paleo diet’s focus on cutting carbs down, there is a significant difference in how each plan uses this reduction in carbohydrates.
The ketogenic diet relies on very low levels of carbohydrates to
