Darkness And Light - Thuso Mathebe
About the book
This book is a collection of poems dealing with loss, love, pain, happiness, depression and abandonment.
I believe that life is a combination of darkness and light and we see and experience this throughout life. Darkness represents all the pain, hurt and suffering that we as human beings cannot escape. The pain of losing a parent, the pain of struggling with depression and anxiety and all the forms of suffering, they are all darkness.
The light represents joy, love, peace and harmony. The feeling of being in love and alive in that present moment, a feeling that money cannot buy, true happiness; that is the light.
I have been blessed enough to have such moments in my life, even when the darkness comes I welcome it with both hands, for one man said that I thank the darkness for it shows me the stars
. That couldn’t be more true, for in the darkest moments of my life I gained strength, and character.
Darkness and light are powerful,
and the combination of the two cannot be separated
Pain is a part of life and we need to learn to make peace with that and in doing so we will truly discover the value of true happiness and peace.
This book explores both darkness and light, and the two are portrayed in these poems.
Remember, don’t get lost in the darkness of the past or the present but find the light and let it shine.
Author’s note
For a long time I struggled with the title of this book, I didn’t know what to call it because it has a vortex of emotions and stories within these poems that my heart can only tell. I wanted to title it ‘’Strangers we call our fathers, at some point I wanted to title it
Colours of my heart".
Finally it came upon me that all that these poems are portraying is the brightest and darkest side of my life and life itself. I would be lying if I said that the absence of my father in my life did not have any impact on me and how I see life, so this book has those raw emotions I had about my father and my loneliness, anxiety, and my passion for love.
One can say this book portrays the life of a young man (me), who like the millions out there grew without his father. I express my inner conflicts and thoughts on what it means to be in love with someone. I also show my dark side that the world around him does not know. My obsession with my high school sweetheart is very hard to ignore since I have written the sweetest of poems expressing how I miss her. I admire love to the fullest extend and my poems also show how I still seeks to feel like that first time being in love, before that first cut which hit me down to my knees.
Acknowledgments
Firstly I thank God, the light that shines in the darkness. He is my pillar my strength and even though there have been times when I didn’t stick with Him, He always stuck with me. Through the darkness he has proven Himself worthy to be trusted. He is strength to the weak, sight to the blind, and a father to the fatherless.
God I thank you for taking me this far, it is only by your undeserved grace that I’m the person I am today. I might not be far yet but with You I believe and trust that you have more
