    Foreword

I came to know Frank after he had requested a referral to a dietitian from his local GP to assist him with his weight loss journey. At our initial consultation, Frank expressed his desperation to reduce his weight, clearly frustrated at his failure to lose weight after trialling a number of diets with no substantial results. He also expressed his confusion and boredom of the restricted foods he was consuming.

Frank’s story portrays his understanding of how to achieve sustainable weight loss, in his own words, which comes from realigning his thoughts and approaches to food through a deeper interest to learn, ask questions and implement information around food choices. As a dietitian, this empowerment in individuals is what we aim to give and so it has been a wonderful experience to see Frank widen his perspective on food, and realizing the importance of enjoyment and balance for long term success.

Although Frank faces many challenges, including his limited ability to exercise, Frank’s determination has been the most outstanding and consistent attribute I’ve noticed and he continues to teach me that sometimes people can go beyond what we think they’re capable of and to never set the bar too low.
