Health tip overweight - Maximilian Loidl
Introduction
One speaks of being overweight when the normal weight is exceeded by more than 10 to 5 percent. Normal weight is calculated according to the Broca formula: Body length in centimeters minus 100 = equal to normal weight in kilograms. For example: 170 - 100 = 75 kg. Normal weight. Add 20% more. So 170 – 100 100 = 75 +20% 15 = 90 kg Overweight.
The Broca formula is only suitable for a quick, rough estimate. It does not take into account gender-specific differences. In addition, it is not suitable for tall or short persons or for children. Small persons are too often classified as overweight, whereas large persons are rarely classified as overweight.
Doctors speak of obesity when the normal weight increases by 20 percent or more. The excess fat is stored in the subcutaneous cell tissue. The degree of obesity can be determined by measuring the thickness of the skin folds in certain places - e.g. on the upper arm, on the back below the shoulder blade. Over 50% of women and over 75% of men in Austria suffer from obesity. In an international comparison, Austria thus performs almost as badly as the USA. In the case of obesity, the situation in Austria is not quite as bad, with only
23% of men and 36% of women suffering from obesity.
The Body Measure Index formula is: BMI = body weight (in kilograms) divided by height (in meters) squared: The unit of BMI is therefore kg/m2 . 72 kg with a height of 1.70 m means a BMI of 24.9.
According to the classification of the World Health Organization (WHO), the BMI values for normal weight are between 18.5 and 24.9. A body mass index of 25 or more is referred to as overweight and 30 or more as obesity. For seniors, the body mass index may be somewhat higher.
Excessive body weight increases the risk of metabolic disorders and other diseases. Especially cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, gout, fatty liver, wear and tear of the joints and gallstones are favored by overweight.
Frequently, elevated fatty liver - cholesterol, triglycerides, uric acid and high blood sugar levels are associated with high body weight. Overloaded fat deposits generally put a strain on metabolism, heart and circulation. Other disadvantages of being overweight include increased risk in accidents and surgery, more frequent complications in pregnancy, and generally low fitness.
If predisposed to diabetes, obesity increases the risk of manifesting diabetes. In general, overweight people consume more
