    Preface

I hope you find this collection of poems and their accompanying photographs enjoyable. Pour yourself a glass of wine and take a look around. You’ll find a good dose of humor, a little angst, and many heartfelt memories shared, all of them triggered by the poets’ associations with wine. The poets are as varied as the poems’ perspectives. They come three countries: Canada, England, and the U.S. We have representation from California to New York and points in between, especially from that Third Coast called Texas.

I first issued a call for poems about wine pre-pandemic. I was thinking my way to publish the book and schedule readings at various wineries when the world tilted and was shuttered. I drank a lot of wine at the time, but I shelved the wine book and moved on to feel really sorry for myself. It took me a long time, months and months and months actually, to gain momentum, regroup, and contact the list of contributors with updates and promises. Only one gave up on the project and sent a snippy email that she simply couldn’t wait any longer. Thank you to everybody else who maintained our connections and exercised extraordinary patience.

The photographs were all obtained from websites specializing in copyright-free images. Unsplash and Pixabay give photographers a platform to offer their work to the world, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to include the images that magnify the poetry’s themes and subjects. I’m the one, with the blessing of the poets, who matched the pictures to their poems. It didn’t happen the other way around. In the beginning was the poem, was the word, but the two taken together bridge to a larger metaphor than either one alone.

In addition to the poets and photographers, it took people on the same wave link to turn what began as a vague idea into the finished book. Artist extraordinaire Diana Synatzske painted the watercolor on the cover to perfection, meeting my one request that the cover art not be a wine cliché. Pre-press production guru Jeri Martin and I have worked together for years on various projects, but this time she’s also a contributor; slinging type and setting margins aren’t her only skills. When I thought about an introduction explaining the history and importance of wine, I immediately thought of Betsy Ball with all her wine credentials. Long-time friends and former colleagues, Betsy and her husband Greg Ball set out on a grand adventure a few years ago. They became nomads and started Euro Travel Coach, a premier travel company. Don’t skip the introduction. It provides great insight into our long-standing fascination and love of the grape.

So in spite of being thrown off schedule by months and then by years, I’m pleased to offer Wine Poems. Open a bottle of your favorite wine to sip as you read. Savor slowly and enjoy. À votre santé. Beviamo
