Chapter I: Understanding Depression
Depression has become an epidemic that must be treated as a major public health problem. It will not go away, no matter what we do about it. It is a mental trap that we subconsciously use to avoid realizing that we are even suffering from it. We seek to forget about it and hope that we are free of it. We push it away, suppress it, so we don't notice it, and we can go on living our lives.
Depression is a very common mental illness, but many of us don't realize how common it is. If we consider the milder cases, the depression rate rises to 25 percent. One in four people you meet is likely to have a serious encounter with depression at some point in their lives. It is not just because more people are aware of it; it's a real increase in the hard numbers. Recent research comparing depression rates in Taiwan, Puerto Rico, and Lebanon found that it is more common in the younger generation. There is also a higher risk of developing it throughout one's lifetime, and one-fifth of all people who suffer from major depression commit suicide.
Clinical depression is a severe, often fatal, illness that is difficult to detect. It is one of the most costly diseases in terms of the economic burden it places on our society. Researchers from the World Bank and the World Health Organization have published shocking statistics about the life lost to this illness. In 2000, the U.S. alone incurred $83 billion in direct treatment costs, medical care, lost productivity, and shortened life spans. Depression is second only to cancer in economic impact, and its costs are nearly as high as heart disease. Understanding and accepting that it is a real disease is the first and most important step in overcoming depression.
What is Depression?
Depression, also known as Major Depressive Disorder (or Clinical Depression), is a serious but common illness that negatively affects how you perceive yourself and others and how you think and
