    ◆◆◆

    I SAW YOU

    ◆◆◆

I saw you, a strong, sturdy stem,

    Raising your branches and leaves

    High in praise

    Sure of more tomorrows

    The cankerworm came,

    Weakening the stem’s strength

    Your leaves aged prematurely—

    Gradually plucked off in turns

    Branches dried to twigs

    Roots made redundant

    Abandoned their duties

    The sunlight brings no warmth,

    The rain brings no refreshing

    The wind brings no music

    This is not winter’s sleep

    Tomorrow does not worry you

    You return to Earth—

    Your maker’s Eden

    TO MUMMY LIZZY

    ◆◆◆

My darling Elizabeth Inyang Adebayo went home to Heaven on Saturday night, May 23, 2022. We were shocked and devastated by the gaping hole her life and memory will leave in our family, fellowship, and friends. However, we are eternally grateful that her end was peaceful – free of pain by God’s mercy and a miracle – considering she was a cancer patient. We are also eternally grateful that she is now in the presence of our Saviour, our Lord Jesus Christ, whom she deeply loved, truly served, and loyally worshipped.

Mummy Lizzy (as I fondly called her) lived a full 66 years and four extra months. She overflowed with intelligence, hospitality, and motherhood, and was a friend to the fellowship of believers of the most high God. ‘Yeshua’ was always the emblem on her phone and social media. She began work as a brilliant scientist in 1982 and then became a gifted lawyer in 2000. She retired in 2011 when first diagnosed with cancer, which was successfully treated. She then devotedly served as a social carer till February 2022. Until her end, she was a creative writer of prayers, a great cook, a loving mother, a devoted wife, a loving grandmother, and so much more – as you will read and agree with me in the poems, excerpts and tributes to her blessed memory.

Despite the depth of her personality and her cheerful demeanour, she could be an introvert, preferring to keep things to herself and sharing with the Lord only. However, she had a very great sense of humour and kept a smile perpetually on her face. If she was not smiling, she was in deep rapport with her Yeshua.

Her working life was impressive. Apart from giving counsel and advice to people on a government level, she ministered to a number of people spiritually and had great impact on them. For example, her being a good and humble wife to my brother served as an example to the younger wives in the Brethren fellowship. The virtues of marriage and the proverbial wife of Proverbs 36 was her model. The number of people I saw lovingly showering devotions of prayers and gifts upon her and the family in the last weeks of life is a testimony.

I loved her way of creating unique nicknames
