Does an AR 15 Need a Stock?
While it is technically possible to shoot an AR 15 without having a stock attached, this isn’t really recommended. The purpose of an AR stock is to reduce recoil and increase accuracy, as you can press it against your shoulder to maintain a solid shooting stance and keep the weapon steady. Without a rifle stock, you’re forced to hip fire the weapon, or hold it up to your eye without stability, which is not accurate. However, with this in mind, you cannot put a rifle stock on an AR 15 pistol. This can turn the weapon into a short-barreled rifle in the eyes of the ATF. Instead, you need a stabilizing pistol brace and pistol buffer tube, which are different from traditional rifle and carbine stocks.
What Is a Collapsible Stock?
Also known as a telescoping stock, a collapsible AR15 Stock is one that the shooter can shorten to make it smaller. This often involves pressing a level or button and pushing the rifle stock, causing it to retract into itself. This is useful for shooters who want to switch between mid-range and close quarters engagements, as the shooter can make the stock much smaller to improve maneuverability and handling.
Are AR 10 and AR 15 Stocks the Same?
The answer is a little murky. While the general design of the stock is the same, the length of the buffer tube determines if an AR 10 stock will work on an AR 15 and vice versa. If you have a mil-spec stock with mil-spec buffer tubes on your AR 15 and AR 10, then the AR stock should be interchangeable.
