Is a tent shelter?
Yes, a tent is considered a shelter, but there are several kinds of tents.
Traditional camping tents have a floor, walls (often with screens), and a rainfly over the top. The rainfly can usually be removed to allow a breeze through without pesky insects getting at you. A rainfly can be put on quickly if a storm rolls in, and be used to block the sun on hot days.
A beach tent has some key differences from camping tents. They usually only have three sides and no floor. They're typically freestanding, which means they don't need to be staked to the ground, and they're usually very fast and easy setup and takedown. They are intended as a sun shelter to provide sun protection while allowing you to take in the view.
A canopy tent is typically just a "roof" with no walls or floor. They're common at picnics, festivals, and large car camping trips. Some offer a screen house configuration that is technically walls but made of mesh to keep out insects. They're primarily a big sunshade that several people can fit under, many are big enough to accommodate an entire picnic table!
