CE1042a Mobile Phone Technology

Lecture 11 Summary

Module Aim
The aim of this Module is to provide the student with a level of understanding of mobile phone technologies which enable them to make decisions regarding the appropriate application of the technology.

1. How does a mobile phone call work

Phone connects wirelessly to a mast (base station) Cells with masts at corners Mobile circuit switching centre HLR / VLR Connected to PSTN

2. 1G / 2G / 3G / 4G?
What does each generation mean? 1G = analogue 2g digital dial up data at first 3G digital predominates 4GLTE?

3. Speech to Transmit
INPUT speech 1. Convert to digital and compress 2. Add some error protection 3. Interleave the blocks 4. Encrypt 5. Mulitplex 6. Modulate OUTPUT Radio waves

4. SMS
How does this work on the control n Limited to 160 7 bit bytes Sending and receiving an SMS Inter and Intra operator SMS formats, (not exact details) Protocols to achieve long SMS WAP SMS (or SMS with a URL) MMS not really SMS

5. Mobile Internet
Is there such a thing? HTML5 unifies the Internet Mobile Cloud Computing

6. Sensors and Controllers

There will be NO exam question on the coursework.

7. Basic Concepts of Cellular networks

Cellular Concept Frequency Reuse Cell Splitting Registration Terminal Authentication Handoff

8. 2G+ Networks
GSM base 2G network GSM how does it work GPRS what was the intention Switch data to a separate always on network Workings of the GPRS network Edge new modulation scheme aimed to get more throughput

9. 3G the network today

Workings of 3G emphasising differences from GPRS Overview of modulation schemes used. The handover protocols HSPA (HPSDA & HSPUA) HSPA+ Not detail of how modulation works but ideas behind these.

10. 4G LTE
What is 4G LTE? Demand Overview of technologies used
OFDMA MIMO SAE

LTE advance Understanding of frequencies and usability of these

11. WiMAX
Understanding of WiFi assumed WiMax as grown up WiFi Potential of 802.16d as DSL replacement Potential of 802.16e as a 4G to phone technology Potential of 4G linking WiFi and WiMax

12. Relative Speeds

Technology GSM GPRS EDGE 3G - UTMS HSPA HSPA+ LTE LTE Advance Speed Max and average

WiFi 802.11n WiMax 802.16d

WiMax 802.16e
