Rotameter: Instrument Study Project

Rotameter is an instrument used to measure fluid flow rates. It works by having fluids enter at the bottom of a tapered tube, where the flow rate is read based on the height of a float within graduations on the tube. It must be installed vertically. Calibration procedures relate the flow rate to the float height using characteristics of the specific fluid and operating conditions. Rotameters offer advantages like no electrical connections, low pressure drops, and linear variation of float height with flow rate, making them very easy to install and use for measurement. Accuracy is typically within 2% but can be affected by temperature, pressure, and float weight changes from initial calibration conditions.

Rotameter

Instrument Study Project

Working of a Rotameter
Fluids (l/g) enter at the bottom of the metered tapering tube At equilibrium the flow rate is read from the graduations on the tube Always installed vertically Variable Area Meters

Principles of Operation

Calibration Procedures
Flow rate v/s Height
()

Calibrated for common fluids ( air/water ) at Operating Temp & Pressure

Correcting Factors & Calibration Curves

Advantages of using Rotameter

No electrical connections Low pressure drops

Linear variation of height with flow rate

Measurement range is large (floats of different densities for given tapering tube) Very Easy to install.

Reliability and Accuracy

Repeatability of readings is +/- 0.25 % Accuracy is +/- 2 % of full scale

Accuracy and reliability is influenced by accuracy of P, T, Flow control during initial calibration.
Fluid P, T as well as weight of the float will affect accuracy. Yearly calibration recommended

Readings should be made on the sharp edges

Types and Limitations

Sr. No. Material 1 Plastic 2 Glass 3 Metal 1) Used for high temperatures, pressures and corrosive conditions.

Compatible with Compatible with fluids at high fluids at lower 2) Compatible with opaque Applications temperatures temperatures fluids as well. and pH and lower pH 3) Reading is taken by magnetic coupling of float with external needle
