Assignment Fem

This document provides details about an assignment for the course CE 6130: Finite Element Method taught from January to May 2014 at IIT Hyderabad. It includes 4 problems related to finite element methods that must be solved and submitted before February 10th, with late submissions receiving a penalty. Problem 1 involves minimum potential energy and virtual work principles applied to a fixed bar under a central load. Problem 2 uses the Rayleigh-Ritz method to solve a simply supported beam problem. Problem 3 applies a weighted residual method to solve a differential equation. Problem 4 derives the Euler equation for a generalized functional.

CE 6130: Finite Element Method Jan - May 2014 Instructor: Dr A Rajagopal ( rajagopal@iith.ac.

in) Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Hyderabad Assignment 1

TA: Umesh B (ce12p0004[at]iith.ac.in) Mandatory rules: 1. You are required to submit your assignment before the due date. 2. Any late submission will result in negative marking of (-2) marks per day. 3. Copying of assignments is strictly not allowed, if found guilty you will be given zero marks for the assignment under evaluation. Problems 1a) State briey i) Principle of Minimum potential energy ii) Principle of virtual work iii) Weak form and Strong form of Governing equations. b) A bar xed at both ends has a span L as shown in Fig. 1. The bar is subjected to a constant force P at midpoint along its length. Determine the stress distribution in bar using Potential energy approach. Consider u = a1 + a2 x + a3 x2 + a4 x3 .

Use Rayleigh for i = 1, 2 and 5 to compute deection Ritz method with innite series: u = ai sin ix L and bending moment at center. Draw a graph to Compare the results for one, two and ve parameter solutions. 3. Consider the dierential equation d2 u + x2 u = 0 f or 0 < x < 1 (1) dx2 with boundary conditions at x = 0,u = 0 and at x = 1, du = 0. Using approximation function dx as u = a + bx + cx2 + dx3 solve the dierential equation using any of the Weighted residual methods that you know. 4. Write the Euler equation for the generalized functional as given below: I (u, v ) =

f (x, y, u, v, ux , , vx , uy , vy ) dx dy

(2)

write down the Displacement and Force boundary terms. Determine the Euler equation for the functional f (1/22 ,x 50) with the domain in the interval (0, L). 1
