EE 255 Assignment #4
Problem #1
A 100-KVA, 11000/2200-V, 60-Hz single-phase transformer has the following equivalent circuit
parameters, referred to low-voltage side:
Req = 0.531, X eq = 2.49,
Rc = 4950, X m = 1440,
The transformer is supplying at 2200-V rated load at a power factor of 0.8 lagging. Use the
approximate circuit to determine:
1. The voltage regulation of the transformer,
2. The efficiency of the transformer.

Problem #2
A 100-KVA, 60-Hz, 12000/240-V single-phase transformer is tested to obtain the equivalent
circuit parameters using a short-circuit test. The voltage applied to the 12000-V side is 600 V
with a short-circuit current equal to the rated current and short-circuit power of 1200 W.
a. Find Req and X eq .
b. Assume that the transformer supplies a load of 100 KVA at 240 V and 0.95 PF lagging
on the secondary side. Determine the voltage required at the primary side and the power
factor.
Problem #3
A 1.5 KVA, 220:110 V, 60 Hz, single-phase transformer gave the following test results:
Open-circuit test:
V = 220 V
I = 0.2 A
P = 25 W
Short-circuit test:
V = 16.5 V
I = 6.8 A
P = 40 W
a) Determine the voltage regulation for full-load at 110 V and 0.85 power factor
lagging. Use approximate circuit.
b) Determine the efficiency of the transformer at full-load, 110 V, and 0.85 power factor
lagging.
Problem #4
A 20 KVA, 2200/220 V, 60 Hz, single-phase transformer gave the following test results:
Open-circuit test:
V = 2200 V,
I = 0.152 A
P = 161 W
Short-circuit test:
V = 20.5 V
I = 91 A
P = 465 W
a) Determine the voltage regulation of the transformer for a rated load at 220 V and 0.8
pf lagging. Use the approximate circuit.
b) Determine the all-day efficiency of the transformer on a load cycle supplied at 220 V
and approximated by:
full load for 8 hours at PF = 0.8 lagging
50% full load for 8 hours at PF = 0.8 lagging
05% full load for 8 hours at PF = 0.8 lagging

Problem #5

The following test data were taken on a 15 KVA, 2200/440 V, 60 Hz transformer:


Short-circuit test: P = 620 W
I = 34 A
V = 25 V
Open-circuit test: P = 320 W
I=1A
V = 440 V
Calculate the voltage regulations of this transformer when it supplies full load and the
following power factors:
1. 0.8 lagging
2. 0.8 leading
3. unity.
Problem #6
A 1.5 KVA, 220:110 V, 60 Hz, single-phase transformer gave the following test results:
Open-circuit test: V = 110 V
I = 0.4 A
P = 25 W
Short-circuit test: V = 8.25 V
I = 13.6 A
P = 40 W
c) Determine the parameters of the approximate equivalent circuit of the
transformer referred to the high-voltage side.
d) Determine the efficiency of the transformer at full-load, 110 V, and 0.8 power
factor leading. Use the approximate circuit.
Problem #7
A 20 KVA, 2200/220 V, 60 Hz, single-phase transformer gave the following test results:
Open-circuit test:
V = 220 V,
I = 1.52 A
P = 161 W
Short-circuit test:
V = 205 V
I = 9.1 A
P = 465 W
c) Determine the parameters of the approximate equivalent circuit of the transformer
referred to the low-voltage side.
d) Determine the all-day efficiency of the transformer on a load cycle supplied at 220 V
and approximated by:
95% full load for 8 hours at PF = 0.8 lagging
60% full load for 8 hours at PF = 0.8 lagging
05% full load for 8 hours at PF = 0.8 lagging

A 100 KVA, 11,000/2200 V, 60 Hz, single-phase power system transformer gave the following
test results:
Open-circuit test:
V = 2200 V,
I = 1.59 A
P = 980 W
Short-circuit test:
V = 580 V
I = 9.1 A
P = 1100 W
a) Determine the voltage regulation of the transformer when supplying rated load at
2200 V and a lagging power factor of 0.8. Use the approximate circuit.
b) Find the efficiency of the transformer when supplying rated load at 0.8 power factor
lagging.

The following test data were taken on a 15 KVA, 2200/440 V, 60 Hz transformer:
Short-circuit test: P = 620 W
I = 34 A
V = 25 V
Open-circuit test: P = 320 W

a) Calculate the voltage regulation of this transformer under full load and 0.9 pf
lagging. Use the approximate circuit.
b) Find the efficiency for the load condition of part (a).
