I observed three diferent science experiments in class today!!

Warm Air Needs More Room

How does it work?
As the air inside the balloon heats up it starts to expand. The molecules begin to move
faster and further apart from each other. This is what makes the balloon stretch. There
is still the same amount of air inside the balloon and bottle, it has just expanded as it
heats up. Warm air therefore takes up more space than the same amount of cold air, it
also weighs less than cold air occupying the same space. You might have seen this
principle in action if you've fown in or watched a hot air balloon.
What you can do at home:

To see the opposite of this efect, take the bottle-balloon invention of of the stove.
Place it in a container full of ice, or stand it up in a freezer. The balloon will shrink back
down and defate, and the bottle itself might compress inward as the air gets colder!
What you will need:

Empty bottle

Balloon

Pot of hot water (not boiling)

Rolling Can
How does it work?
When you rub the balloon through your hair, invisible electrons (with a negative charge)
build up on the surface of the balloon. This is called static electricity, which means "non-
moving electricity" The electrons have the power to pull very light objects (with a positive
charge) toward them - like the soda can.
What you can do at home:

Try to answer these questions:

1. Does the size of the balloon change the power of the pull?
2. Does the length of the persons hair efect the power of the static electricity?
3. How much water can you put in the can until the balloon can't pull it anymore?
What you will need:

An empty soda can

Blown-up balloon

A head of hair
Eggs-speriment
How does it work?
If you have the same amount of each, salt water weighs more than fresh water. There is
more stuf in salt water than in the same amount of fresh water. We say salt water is
denser than fresh water. The denser salt water can hold up the weight of an egg. But the
fresh water doesnt have enough stuf in it to support the same weight. Things foat
better in salt water than in fresh water because salt makes water heavier.
What you can do at home:

See what other materials sink and foat in salt water versus fresh water!
What you will need:

Random materials you can fnd around the house

two drinking glasses

tap water

table salt
