AE 662: Rocket Engine Design

Assignment No: 3

Q1.
A semi-cryogenic (Liquid Kerosene + LO2) liquid propellant rocket engine based on
gas generator feed cycle is designed to produce ISP of 400 s and 250 s by the main thruster
and auxiliary nozzle. The stoichiometric OFR is used for main thruster while OFR of 0.7 is
used for gas generator. The temperature of gas generator is restricted to 1000 K. The pressure
change across the kerosene ( = 950 kg/m3) and liquid oxygen ( = 1150 kg/m3) pumps can
be 4 and 6 MPa respectively. The isentropic efficiencies of kerosene and LOX pumps are
0.85 and 0.8 respectively. If the molecular weight and specific heat ratio of combustion
products from gas generator happen to be 1.5 kg/kmol and 1.28 respectively, determine the
fraction of propellants to be supplied to gas generator, OFR of thruster and total specific
impulse.
Q2.
A liquid propellant (MMH +N2O4) rocket engine is used to develop a thrust of 1.2 kN
with characteristics velocity of 2050 m/s at chamber pressure of 0.85 MPa and OFR of 1.6. If
its thrust coefficient, CF happens to be 1.65, determine (i) throat of nozzle, (ii)
& 24 . For this 10 elements doublet impinging injection system is used with
injection pressure of 1.5 MPa and discharge coefficient of 0.96. By considering MMH and
N2O2 to be 868 and 1410 kg/m3, determine diameter of injection holes.
Q3.
Determine the volume of gas tank at 15 MPa needed to pressurize H2O2 propellant
tank at 3.5 MPa in rocket engine produces 10 kN at chamber pressure of 1.8 MPa for 40 s.
Assume that 1.5% extra propellant is to be provided for safe operation.
Q4.
In a rocket engine, the combustion chamber with 1.2 m long and 0.4 m diameter at
pressure 18 MPa and 3200 K produces 10 kN. The flow through the combustion chamber 15
in the range of 5x107. The outer surface temperature of Stainless steel (ks = 29 W/m. K)
chamber wall with thickness of 2.9 mm is maintained at 230 K. The thermal conductivity
(kg) and Prandtl of combustion gases in combustion chamber happen to be 0.19 W/m. K and
0.75 respectively. If the radiation is around 30 % of total heat flux to the wall, determine
inner surface wall temperature and total heat flux to the wall. State all assumptions made by
you for solving this problem.
Q5.
A rocket engine is operated at 1.8 MPa and 3200 K, when coolant temperature (TC) is
maintained at 300 K. The hot wall at throat with thickness (L) 3.2 mm is maintained at 1000
K. The thermal conductivity of throat wall and (kw) and heat transfer of coolant (hu) are 25
W/m. K and 0.8 MW/m3.K respectively. Assuming (L/kw), TL and hL and fraction of
radiative heat transfer remain constant, determine the chamber process when Twh is increased
to 1250 K with the new material, at the throat.
