TRAINING COURSES REGISTRATION, REFUND, AND DISCOUNT POLICIES

All registration cancellations or transfers will be charged a $100 processing fee.


Payment by Purchase Order submission constitutes a contract between the customer and CASTI
wherefore paymentas per CASTI's Registration, Refund, and Discount Policiesis the responsibility of
the customer. Payment by Cheque or Purchase Order is due upon the receipt of the invoice and must be
received by CASTI no later than three weeks prior to the course start date.
Registration cancellations received in writing ten or more full business days before the course start date
will receive a refund, less a $100 processing fee.
Registration cancellations received in writing between two to ten full business days before the course start
date will receive a credit, less a $100 processing fee. All credits are valid for one year from the course
start date. Credits will not be extended or refunded under any circumstances. Credits are issued to the
original purchaser only. Credits are not transferable. Only the original purchaser may use the credit and
only while the credit is valid.
Registration transfer requests received in writing two or more full business days before the course start
date will receive a credit, less a $100 processing fee. All credits are valid for one year from the course
start date. Credits will not be extended or refunded under any circumstances. Credits are issued to the
original purchaser only. Credits are not transferable. Only the original purchaser may use the credit and
only while the credit is valid.
Absolutely no refunds or credits are given for registration cancellations with less notice than two full
business days.
Absolutely no refunds or credits for no-shows. This policy extends for the entire length of each course,
such that if the customer does not attend any part or all of the course, CASTI is not liable for any missed
content, including but not limited to all training materials.
All registration cancellation, transfer, or substitution requests must be received in writing via email to
casti@casti.ca and all requests must be confirmed via email reply from CASTI. Only cancellations,
transfers, or substitutions that have been confirmed by CASTI will be honoured.

In the event that the original purchaser cannot attend, an attendee substitution may be requested.
Requests for attendee substitution must be received in writing by CASTI at least two full business days
prior to the course start date. All substitutions are subject to written approval from CASTI. Substitutions
will only be considered upon request of the original purchaser. Discounts for multiple course registrations
are not valid in the event of substitutions and such discounts will be revoked. All outstanding registration
fees resulting from revocation of discounts must be paid before the course start date.
A full (i.e., 100%) of the registration fee will be refunded for courses cancelled or postponed by CASTI.
CASTI reserves the right to postpone or cancel any course(s) and/or change instructors at any time.
CASTI shall not be responsible for the delay or failure to perform any of the terms and conditions or other
activities if such delay or failure is caused by strike, war, act of God, circumstances beyond the control of
CASTI, or force majeure.
Registration signifies acceptance that CASTI will not be held liable for any costs or fees incurred by
registrants for travel, accommodation, and other expenses should a course be postponed, cancelled, or
otherwise modified.
CASTI offers course discounts to individuals who register in multiple courses. The same individual must
be attending all courses within the same calendar year to qualify for a discount. Discounts are based on
descending value of courseshighest priced course is paid in full and additional course registrations will
receive a 5% discount

CLA REFUND POLICY FOR HYBRID CLA TRAINING COURSES


In addition to the items listed above, the following items apply to all training courses with an online component:

Once your pre-classroom online learning account has been accessed:


o cancellations received in writing ten or more full business days before the in-classroom course
start date will receive a refund, less a 25% fee.
o cancellations or transfers received in writing between two to ten full business days before the inclassroom course start date will receive a credit valid for one year, less a 25% fee. The original
registrant and the new transferred registrant must be from the same company.

For all CLA courses where pre-classroom online learning accounts have NOT been accessed:
o cancellations received in writing ten or more full business days before the in-classroom course
start date will receive a refund, less a $100 cancellation fee.
o cancellations or transfers received in writing between two to ten full business days before the inclassroom course start date will receive a credit valid for one year, less a $100 fee. The original
registrant and the new transferred registrant must be from the same company.

All credits are valid for one year from the date the cancellation is received in writing. Credits will not be extended
or refunded under any circumstance. Credits are transferrable provided the original registrant and the new
transferred registrant are from the same company.

CLA REFUND POLICY FOR ONLINE CLA TRAINING COURSES

For all CLA online-only courses where the online learning account has NOT been accessed, cancellations
received in writing ten or fewer business days after the registration date will receive a full refund, less a
$100 processing fee.
Absolutely no refunds or credits for cancellations after ten full business days.
Absolutely no refunds or credits will be given after the online learning account has been accessed.
Printing is not allowed.
PO registrations will not be given the passcode until payment is received.

CASTI EXAM PREPARATION GUARANTEE POLICY


Customers who are unsuccessful in achieving a passing mark with the API ICP, AWS CWI, CSA W178.2 Welding
Inspector, or Alberta Welding Examiner exams after taking the related CASTI hybrid exam preparation course will
be offered a 50% discount to retake the same course again, provided all of the following requirements are met:

All of the pre-classroom online lessons were fully completed and all answers submitted online prior to the
start of in-classroom training.
100% attendance at the classroom training.
All of the post-classroom training is fully completed and all answers submitted online prior to the exam
date.
This offer is limited to the first available course where seating is available.

Final approval for registration under the CASTI Exam Preparation Guarantee Policy is given at the sole discretion
of Codes and Standards Training Institute (CASTI).

E-DOCUMENT ORDERS POLICY

E-document purchases are not eligible for refund, credit, or exchange.


CASTI e-documents are available as single-user license products only. All CASTI e-document
publications are protected by copyright. You are permitted to install your CASTI e-document ONE time on
ONE computer only. When installed, your e-document cannot be moved to or accessed from any other
computer(s). Please be sure to select an appropriate computer to install your CASTI e-document.
You are responsible for ensuring that firewalls or other software/hardware configurations do not prevent
the CASTI e-document software from authorizing the installation online. CASTI cannot provide technical
support for your firewall configuration. Please contact your firewall provider or network technical support
personnel to resolve such issues.
If the CASTI e-document PDF file is removed from the licensed computer for any reason, CASTI is not
responsible for replacing the e-document. However, at CASTI's sole discretion, a one-time reinstallation
may be authorized for current e-document editions only. Outdated or replaced editions will not be
supported.
CASTI is not responsible for the replacement of e-documents lost, stolen, or damaged due to software,
hardware, and/or operating system issues that render e-documents inoperable or inaccessible. CASTI is
not responsible for the replacement of e-documents lost or damaged due to removal, deletion, or
overwriting of e-documents whether accidental or intentional. CASTI is also not responsible for the
replacement of e-documents when the computer on which the e-document has been installed is replaced,

You are permitted to create a single hard copy of your CASTI e-document by printing a copy of it from the
computer on which you choose to install the e-document. This is the only way you may create a hard
copy of your CASTI e-document. You may not create any additional hard copies through any means; you
may not print subsequent copies and you may not photocopy your single hard copy. You may create your
single hard copy at any time after purchasing the e-document; however, CASTI will only provide technical
support to help you do so within 30 days of your purchase.

Codes and Standards Training Institute (CASTI) was founded in 1982 when John E. Bringas, P.Eng., taught our
first course in welding metallurgy. Since then, CASTI has presented over 1,500 courses internationally,
specializing in the area of engineering codes and standards (e.g., API, ASME, ASTM, CSA, NACE, ISO, etc.).
The CASTI instructor staff includes members of many codes and standards committees, as well as globallyrecognized professional engineers with international accreditations.
CASTI technical courses are developed for inspectors, engineers, technologists, designers, supervisors,
maintenance, and quality assurance personnel who work for owners-users such as petrochemical plants,
refineries, gas plants, power plants, oil/gas pipelines, pulp and paper mills, municipalities, or those who work for
engineering procurement companies, inspection companies, fabricators, and regulators in governing jurisdictions.
OUR INSTRUCTIONAL PHILOSOPHY
To ensure the highest quality education, all courses are developed and taught by highly knowledgeable and
experienced instructors who are or have been Code committee members. As an IACET Training Provider, CASTI
training ensures course development, delivery, and evaluation in accordance with the IACET Standard 1, which is
recognized worldwide (http://www.iacet.org/iacet-standard/ansiiacet-standard). We not only teach "what" is in the
Code or Standard, but, more importantly, "why" it is there.
TUITION TAX CREDIT
CASTI is a certified educational institution approved by the Minister of Human Resources and Social
Development Canada. Accordingly, students may claim the fees paid to CASTI for purposes of the Tuition,
Education and Textbook Tax Credits, provided that all appropriate criteria for eligibility have been met. Please
contact the Canada Revenue Agency to inquire about your specific eligibility.
CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS (CEU)
CASTI is an Authorized Provider for the International Association for Continuing
Education and Training (IACET), 8405 Greensboro Drive, Suite 800, McLean,
VA 22102. In obtaining this approval, CASTI has demonstrated that it complies
with the ANSI/IACET Standards, which are widely recognized as standards of
good practice internationally. As a result of their Authorized Provider
membership status, CASTI is authorized to offer IACET CEUs for its programs
that qualify under the ANSI/IACET Standards. One CEU is equal to ten contact
hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience under
responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction. Only
IACET Authorized Providers, who undergo a strict evaluation by continuing
education peers, can award the IACET CEU. For APEGGA members, one CEU
is equal to ten professional development hours.

CASTI Inspector Career Path

Welding Inspector/Examiner Career Path


1. The shortest and easiest step to begin a career as an inspector is to obtain the CSA Level 1 Certified
Welding Inspector (CWI) accreditation (see Box A).
Note 1: if code experience is insufficient, it is recommended to take the Introduction to ASME
Codes course as the first step.*
Note 2: jumping through this career path by going directly to the Alberta Welding Examiner
(AWE) or API Inspector certification programs are much larger steps that require considerable
thought before attempting them; please contact CASTI customer support staff for further
discussion to assist you with this decision.
2. There is a two-year waiting period for a CSA Level 1 CWI before challenging their Level 2 CWI exams;
during this two-year period, the Alberta WE certification can be obtained, which typically can take 12 to 18
months (see Box B).
3. The Alberta WE certification typically takes about one to one and a half years to complete.
4. Since there is some overlap between CSA Level 1 CWI and the Alberta WE certifications, the individual
will be better prepared for challenging the WE program after achieving the CSA Level 1 CWI status,
particularly if they have multiple code endorsements.
5. During the two-year waiting period between the CSA Level 1 and Level 2 CWI programs, the inspector
can continue their career development by also obtaining other code endorsement certifications, since
CSA W178.2 limits inspection work to the code that was written during the initial examination
(see Box A1).
6. With this career development path, since there is a significant overlap between the Alberta WE and CSA
Level 2 CWI programs, the inspector will be better prepared to challenge the CSA Level 2 CWI exams
(see Box D).
7. With the CSA Level 2 CWI certification, by recognition, the inspector can become an AWS CWI
(see Box C).
8. To strengthen professional credentials and create more job opportunities, the inspector can continue their
career development by also obtaining other code endorsement certifications since the AWS CWI and
CSA W178.2 certifications limit inspection work to the code that was written during the initial examination
(see Box C1 and D1).
9. After two years or more with the above CASTI career development path, the individual will have obtained
the following three certifications:

CSA Level 2 (with multiple code endorsements),


AWS CWI, and
Alberta Welding Examiner.

API Pressure Equipment Inspector Career Path


Now that the welding inspector/examiner has experience with various codes and writing exams, the next step in
their career development is to follow the API pressure equipment inspector career path, which will be a smoother
and more natural progression.
1. The first API inspector step is to become an API 510 Pressure Vessel Inspector since it is mandated in
Alberta by the Pressure Equipment Safety Regulation (PESR), which is the law, that only certified inservice inspectors are permitted to inspect pressure vessels (see Box E).
2. With the API 510 certification, the individual can then write the Alberta In-Service Pressure Vessel
Inspector certification exam (see Box H).
3. Although there are no other PESR requirements for API inspectors, most companies require piping and
storage tank inspectors to be certified as:

API 570 Piping Inspector (see Box F) and


API 653 Storage Tank Inspector (see Box G).

After becoming either an API 510, 570, or 653 inspector, the inspector can further their career
development by obtaining the three API advanced knowledge certifications (see Box E1, E2, and E3):

API 571 Damage Mechanisms,


API 577 Welding Inspection and Metallurgy, and
API 580 Risk-Based Inspection.

Note: The API 571, 577, and 580 Advanced Knowledge Certifications can now be obtained at
any time if the candidate meets the qualifying requirements and they can be taken prior to the
basic API certifications (API 510, 570, and 653). However, CASTI highly recommends completing
at least one of the basic programs to build a foundation of knowledge prior to writing the
advanced knowledge certifications.

OBJECTIVES
This is an introductory course to provide the basic
understanding of the proper use and interpretation of
ASME Section IX Welding and Brazing Qualifications
Code and its related ASME construction codes. To
accomplish this objective, the course starts with a
two-day review of the ASME Section IX, followed by
one-day study of the base metal metallurgy and welding
metallurgy that ASME Section IX is based on. The
fourth day explores the welding portions of related
ASME construction codes (i.e., ASME Section VIII-1,

OBJECTIVES
Understand the basics of CSA Standard Z662 for
pipeline construction, including scope, design,
materials, welding, installation, inspection, and testing
requirements for new construction, and post
construction repairs and maintenance work. This is an
introductory level seminar for individuals with limited
pipeline training or experience. Upon completion,
attendees will appreciate basic pressure design
calculations, differences between low and high strength
materials (i.e., CSA, API, ASTM), notch toughness
requirements, material test reports and markings, basic
properties of pipeline coatings, effects of shop and field
bending (i.e., hot, induction, cold), CSA welding

commissioning. Attendees will also be aware of the


various pipeline regulatory agencies, associated
pipeline legislation, the influence of CSA Standard B51,
and the use of ASME B31.3 within the scope of CSA
Z662 pipeline construction. Because this is an
introductory seminar, the discussion does not include
details of pipeline stress analysis, design for buoyancy
control, limit states design, arrest of long-running brittle
or ductile fractures, selection and installation of pipeline
coatings, design and installation of cathodic protection
systems, directional drills, girth weld alternative
acceptance criteria, or other fitness-for-service
calculations.
This course will also assist CSA W178.2 exam
candidates who plan to write the Z662 code exam.
However, being an exam candidate is not required.

Understand general principles for selection of crackingresistant

environments in oil and gas production where the
failure of such equipment could pose a risk to the health
and safety of the public and personnel or to the
environment. It can be applied to help to avoid costly
corrosion damage. This will be achieved by studying
basic
steel
metallurgy,
H2S-related

mechanisms, hardness test methods, steel standards
and applying this fundamental knowledge to
understanding the intent of NACE MR0175/ISO 15156
and MR0103. To assist with these objectives, an
introduction to H2S-environment cracking test methods
TM0177 and TM0284 will be studied.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Engineers, testing lab technologists and technicians,

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS


John E. Bringas, P.Eng. is a professional engineer who has practiced metallurgical
engineering and inspection for 31 years. He is one of only 22 people in the world certified as an
API 510, 570, 653, 571, 577, and 580 inspector. He is also an AWS Certified Welding Inspector
and former CGSB certified NDE inspector in UT and RT. He is a long time committee member
of ASTM A01 (Steels), A05 (Coated Steels), B02 (Nonferrous Alloys), NACE STG 32 (Oil and
Gas Production-Metallurgy) and STG 36 (Process Industry-Materials), SAE Division 1 (Carbon
and Alloy Steels), and Canadian Representative on ISO TC 17-SC 4 (Steels). He is the author
of the ASTM Handbook of Comparative World Steel Standards and the CASTI Metals Data
Books. Mr. Bringas has engineering work experience in the steel making, foundry, consulting,
refinery, pipeline and petrochemical industries and is the founder of Codes and Standards
Training Institute and CASTI Publishing Inc.
Roy B. Baguley, P. Eng. graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science
in Metallurgical Engineering in 1977 and a Master of Engineering in Metallurgical Engineering
(Welding) in 1983. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Alberta,
Canada, and has 30 years of domestic and international experience related to metallurgy,
corrosion, welding, and nondestructive examination.
Roy worked as an equipment operator at a major Canadian pipe mill, and as a metallurgical
and NDE technician with a leading metallurgical engineering consulting company. He obtained
CGSB Level II NDE certification in the radiographic, ultrasonic, magnetic particle, and liquid
penetrant test methods.
After graduating in 1977, Roy entered professional life as a metallurgical engineer, performing
failure investigations, materials testing, materials selection, NDE technique development, and
welding qualifications. In 1981 Roy joined ARAMCO and worked with the Projects Inspection
Division on new construction in Saudi Arabia. In 1984 he accepted a contract with the South
African Institute of Welding, returning to Canada one year later to work on a variety of domestic
and international oil and gas projects. In 1987, Roy formed Metal Engineers International Inc.
(MEI) Through MEI, he continues to offer metallurgical, welding, corrosion, and nondestructive
testing expertise, mainly to the oil and gas industry.
Dr. Bruce Ball, P.Eng. is a professional engineer with over 30 years consulting experience in
failure analysis and inspection of plant facilities and mechanical equipment. He has a Ph.D. in
Metallurgical Engineering, was a CSA W178.2 certified welding inspector and is an API 510
pressure vessel inspector. He has been awarded a fellowship by the Canadian Society for
Nondestructive Testing and is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Chemical and
Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta. He was vice chairman of the Canadian
Standards Association Committee on Weld Inspector and Weld Inspection Organization
Certification.
Glynn Woods, P.E. is a Senior Piping Engineer with experience in piping design, stress,
supports, and failure analysis, as well as piping component design, analysis and testing. For
more than 30 years, he has been providing this expertise for both new and operating
petrochemical and power plants using computer evaluations and field experience in arriving at
safe, economical piping designs and solutions to piping problems. Mr. Woods is a member of
the ASME B31.3 Process Piping Committee, the Process Piping Design Course Director for
ASME Continuing Education Institute, and a faculty member for the University of HoustonDowntown continuing education program.

Kamran Mokhtarian, P.E., has 40 years of experience in all aspects of pressure vessels
design fabrication and maintenance. Mr. Mokhtarian received his Masters of Science degree
from Northwestern University. Since 1985, he has contributed to the ASME B&PV Code by
participating in several committees. As vice chairman of Subcommittee VIII, he has been
responsible for some of the improvements to this code and has chaired the special group on
interpretations of Subcommittee VIII. He is currently the chairman of the Pressure Vessel
Research Committee (PVRC), a member of ASME Post Construction Committee, and a
member of API-ASME joint Committee on Fitness-for-Service.
Todd Smith has worked as a welder between 1991 and 2008; completing his Alberta
apprenticeship and becoming a B Pressure welder certified in multiple processes and materials
and owning and managing his own portable welding business. Throughout this time Todd
welded in many areas of industry, including structural steel, equipment manufacturing,
cryogenic vessel fabrication, pressure piping fabrication in shop and facility settings and
pipeline and drilling rigs.
Todd Smith has over 20 years of welding and pressure equipment experience. Completing his
Alberta apprenticeship, Mr. Smith became a B Pressure welder certified in multiple processes
and materials. Over his welding career, he has been involved in many areas of industry,
including structural steel, pulp and paper, equipment manufacturing, cryogenic vessel
fabrication, pipeline and drilling rigs, as well as pressure piping fabrication in both shop and
facility settings. His integrity management and inspection work has involved the review and
development of QA/QC procedures, Quality Management System manuals and welding
procedures, as well as and pressure equipment inspection, welder performance qualification
testing and ISO 9001 audits. Mr. Smith is certified as an API 510, 570, 653, 577, and 571
inspector. He is also a CSA W178.2 Level II Welding Inspector, AWS Certified Welding
Inspector, Alberta Welding Examiner, and Alberta In-service Pressure Vessel Inspector.
Richard J. DePue is the Lead Auditor and QA/QC Inspection Manager of Certified Welding
and Testing with over 27 years of welding related experience. Some of his responsibilities
include conducting and coordinating visual and NDE inspections, AWS welding inspector
training, and project surveillance/auditing activities. He holds a M.Sc. Degree in Technology
Education Administration and is an AWS Senior Certified Welding Inspector, AWS Certified
Welding Educator, AWS Certified Radiographic Interpretation, NY State Public School
Certified Teacher in Metal Trades, ASNT Level III - MT, PT, VT. Mr. DePue started his
technical career as a welder in 1981 and in concert with his formal education and many
technical certifications; he enjoys sharing his knowledge and experience throughout his
training courses.
Alwyn Kaye, M.Eng., P.Eng., graduated from the University of Alberta in 1989 with a Master
Degree in Metallurgical Engineering (Welding) and from the University of Canterbury in 1980
with a Mechanical/Materials Engineering degree. He has over 27 years of experience in
fabrication, construction, design, management, inspection and research. He has a strong
technical background, specializing in technical project management by hands on outcome
success in difficult and unusual plant problems. He has engineered original innovations,
repairs, patents and practical solutions to cost saving designs and field problems in the
pressure equipment, process piping, storage tanks, and pipeline industries.
Mr. Kaye's field experience includes plant shutdowns, welding, equipment remediation and
certification as a National Board Boiler Inspector SCO Cert.#2567, API 510, 570, and 653
certified inspector, AWS Welding Inspector, ASNDT/CGSB Level 1 and 2, MT, PT, UT and
Level 1 RT (lapsed).
Alwyn Kaye is an accomplished CASTI instructor, having taught in Canada and internationally
with excellent reviews and comments.
