Learning Styles
V.A.R.K.

Focus: On the activities

This week you will pay close attention to the different activities your MST uses
during the day.

Objective: For student teachers to gain an initial understanding of how learners

have a preferred learning style and the importance of using a variety of teaching
methods/activities in the classroom.

Task:
Keep a record of the different activities that the students are involved
in during the day. Think about which learning style the activity is best
suited for.

Observation
Observe one child. Try and determine from the information you know what
this childs learning preference is.
In your observation, please write:
1. What the child seemed to enjoy doing most during the activities.
2. The parts of the activities that the child seemed to enjoy least.
3. What you think this childs learning preference is (justify your answer
with the information you learned in the VARK workshop).

Kids are active students, they like to do different activities,

such as, painting, reading a writing, mathematics, puzzle
(etc). Saeed is one of the brilliant students in FS1 class. He
always likes to work individually during the activities,
because he enjoyed doing different activities that not all the
kids in year 3-5 like to do it, and these activities are,
mathematics, reading and writing. Saeed does not enjoy
much in painting, design and drawing activities, that mean
that Saeed learning preference is (R) reading and writing
strategy, because he like reading and writing activities more
than another one.

Reection
Please reflect on Learning Styles.
1. What is your learning style? (from the VARK survey). Please attach your VARK results from the
website.
2. What kinds of activities help you learn best?
3. What do you do that helps you learn when you are studying?
4. Why is it important to know your preferred learning style?
5. Why is it important for a teacher to know about learning styles?

Learning styles are a popular concept in psychology and education

that are intended to identify how people learn best. That's why
everyone has to know his learning style is. My learning preference is
(A) Aural Strategies. The best activities that help aural students are,
attend discussions and tutorials, discuss topics with others, discuss
topics with your teachers, explain new ideas to other people, use a
tape recorder, describe the overheads, pictures and other visuals to
somebody who was not there and leave spaces in your notes for later
recall and filling. he thinks that will help during your study area, put
your summarized notes onto tapes and listen to them, notes may be
poor because you prefer to listen, so you will need to expand your
notes by talking with others and collecting notes from the textbook, out
your summarised notes onto tapes and listen to them, explain your
notes to another aural person, listen to your voices and write them,
down, spend time in quiet places recalling the ideas and speak your
answers aloud or in your head. Is it important to know your preferred
learning style to increase your self confidence, improves your self
image, teaches you how to use your brain better and shows you how
to take advantage of your natural skills & inclinations. It is also
important for a teacher to know about learning styles to expand your
existing learning and studying strategies, gives you a head start and
maximizes your learning potential and enables you to succeed in
school, college and university.
