This Week in flk3
In Language: We discussed then drew a picture of then wrote about our favourite
character from the play Jungle Book.
We worked on sequencing of events. We sequenced familiar routines, like entering
the classroom and moved on to looking at and sequencing pictures. We REALLY have
to use our Eagle Eyes to look at pictures for clues to sequence properly! We used
fairy tales, nursery rhymes and familiar events.
We learned a new poem and an action poem about a butterfly. The action poem
became a video for this week. We made a life cycle of the butterfly using pasta
noodles and beans.
Peter and Tom did excellent jobs with the Surprise Bag this week! We guessed
Peter brought a dinosaur and Tom a firetruck.
Miss Mason continued reading the Junie B. Jones short novel to the children, and
renewed books. We found out the number one blue Spruce book was The day My
We observed our caterpillars with and with the DOC camera. The black caterpillars
got MUCH bigger and fuzzier this week. We saw more and more bristles on the
caterpillars. We noticed their big black heads seemed to get smaller. We learned
they have long spines on each segment. We saw webbing in the vials. The
caterpillar builds a silky, webbed nest as it feeds. We saw what look like small
bits of caterpillar beside the caterpillars in the vials. As the larva grows, it sheds
its skin (this is called molting). As the caterpillar grows larger, it is unable to fit
into its body. We found little black blobs on the nutrient near the caterpillar. We
learned this is the final 'molt' from the caterpillar stage. It includes the head
capsule of the caterpillar. Soooo it gets so big, its head pops off!!!
We also saw white dots that become white stripes down the back of the
caterpillar. They begin to appear brown underneath.
In Art: We made our own paper mache chrysalis with a caterpillar and a butterfly
inside. We also used shaving cream and paint to create our own unique butterfly
window art.
In Music, Drama and Dance: We acted out the Life Cycle of the butterfly.
Rude or Cub Den style of Why you gotta be so rude? was the song of the week
this week!
In Mathematics: We are revisiting numeration. We concentrated on five frames
and discovered different ways to make 5. We did some counting of objects beyond
10. We also used butterflies to discuss symmetry. We each made our own
symmetrical butterfly!
In Personal and Social Development: We ALL tried to speak Spanish! As Miss
Evans draws on her high school Spanish to talk to Gabriela, the children have been
trying to imitate her.much to Gabrielas amusement!
We have noticed that clean up has become a bit of a passing the buck activity so
we limited toys during certain play periods. It is TRULY remarkable how the play
changed! .who we played with, what we played as well as the volume!!
In Inquiry/Directed Play: There was lots of creative use of paper.the children
made masks, ears, teeth, etc to look like some of the Jungle Book characters.
They made butterfly creations. Building is still a big part of the Cub Den. It is
amazing to watch as the students are switching up the materials they are building
with and using familiar materials in new ways!
